My mother used to like frequently reminding me that, as a small child, I always wanted to be either an archaeologist or a lorry driver for Kwik Save.

Seriously.

I wanted to be a fighter pilot or a lorry driver (not necessarily for Kwik Save). Too stupid for either!!

At first, it was a pilot. Then I dropped the idea, mainly because of 9/11 I think! During secondary school, I really wanted to be an Air Traffic Controller. One of my late Grandad's worked within Air Traffic Control for 30 years.

Probably when I was younger it was to be a footballer and still do but there simply isn't enough trial days to give me a go, from the age about 8 or 9 and still now is to work on the railway, in the ticket office. Within the last few days I quite fancy working part of a cabin crew (probably down to the idea of working with hot stewardess) I've recently applied for a course on travel & tourism recently and got an interview on monday so :fc: .

I always wanted to do something within sports at a elite level, wasn't too bothered if it was playing or managing. Now it's pretty similar but I'm a bit more realistic, I want to coach athletes at an elite level.

I always wanted to be a Master Carpenter making and restoring high quality furniture but I was warned off it by the School Careers office who told me it was dying trade so ended up in engineering.

On reflection still think it was mistake as I could have made a decent career out of it being a niche skill/industry would also have loved to be involved in restoring the wood features in historic buildings.

I've toyed with this idea too. I know a couple of people who work in ATC and they say it's probably one of the most rigorous and stressful jobs out there, but you get paid a buttload to compensate, as well as a massive retirement package so you can quit at 45-50 before the stress drops you with a coronary.

Actually went for the selection process not too long before I came out here but failed at the 2nd of 3 stages. I tell you something, they don't mess about with the training procedures. But then that's a good thing - only the best of the best get in.

I really wanted to be a magician's assistant, I don't know why the assistant and not the magician, probably because I knew I didn't have magic powers, apparently after watching my favourite magician of the time I said "I want to be Paul Daniel's assistant" to which the reply was: "You want to be Debbie McGhee?"

That kinda put me off the idea.

A Lumberjack, leaping from tree to tree as they float down the mighty rivers of British Columbia :)

Because you like to wear women's clothing

The stress, and working under pressure, was something that put me off slightly. Although I do have moments when I think, I should have gone through with the idea. I visitied my local careers office in Sheffield, as I quite fancied the idea of starting in the RAF. Didn't take it any further though.

What was your childhood Dream job? Mine was and still is an airline pilot.

Watching Bush Pilots on Dave has got me well into the dream again! I just need to.accumulate about 50k for my Private Pilots License!

Private Pilots License costs 7-8k, its the commercial license that kills you, anything upto 80k. The problem is, in Europe there are a lot of pilots so they don't need to sponsor peoole to get pilots any more as they have a massive pool of them. BA, ran a scheme a couple of years back and Flybe offer part sponsorships. Still you could still get your PPL, if you have that 7k and pretend your a pilot.

True.

My son got his PPL at 18 - The expense was weekly flying lessons. To become a airline pilot though you really need to go to a specialist school (sure you can try with a distance learning package :D ) and they are expensive. The one public "University" in france for pilots you need incredible school marks otherwise you can pay £50 grand for private "university".

I fancied the BA scholarship til discovering a level maths and physics were required!

Anyone fancy PMing me any info on ATC application process and where to apply etc? Any info at all really. Thanks

At the younger age I forget what my ambitions were but I seem to recall saying in secondary school tht I would like to be a reporter but not the nasty kind. As that was impossible I gave up the idea quickly.

Now approaching old age I have revived my interest in that direction.

My Life

My life has been varied and long

at many things I failed.

Aged seven I wanted to be a train driver

but that idea was soon derailed.

I trained to be an Olympic athlete

came last in every race.

I studied to be a lawyer

and lost every single case

I left my job as a crane driver

on the day I was hired.

My stint as a Gigolo

left a lot to be desired.

I applied to be a hotel porter

but was told there was no room,

and my time as a concert pianist

was distinctly out of tune.

So I became a writer

and dream my time away.

I can be who or where I want,

whilst staying in bed all day.
