Why settle for 3 at £20 when they can get 3 at £25.

 

True - people will pay it but that's not my point - it still beats 2 at £25 in the same space!

I saw the BBC quote home ticket prices for Bayern today in an article and I had to rub my eyes; this tells you everything you need to know why many English clubs aren't keen to see standing return at the top two tiers of the game:

 

Standing £12 (yes, twelve quid)

Seating £58

 

Whatever the arguments about safety...this tells you everything. It's almost better value to fly to Munich every other week....(not that I'd want to mind...!)

You mean widening vomitories? You may be right but the likelihood is that the stand itself will need redeveloping anyway to allow for rail height etc so there are always going to be start-up costs involved. Once that's done, why would they settle for 2 people at £25 each when they can get 3 people at £20 each?

 

Because they're morons who shit themselves at the idea of standing let alone making a stand more populated.

It's funny because the last photo in that article had virtually all of the Liverpool fans were standing up, which completely contradicts the point of the article lol. If the majority of the Liverpool fans in the Kop want to stand maybe Its time to make it safer.

 

Also maybe someone should explain to these dangerous standers there will still be seats for them to rest safely.

For him to assert that that statement is 'undeniably correct' is one of the most laughable, ridiculous pieces of journalism I've seen in a while. Utter falsehood and deception. The British public have been thoroughly let down by having someone attempt to mislead them in this article.

Shameful 'article' and the sad thing is anything, literally anything that people say against it, will be used by the likes of the Premier League. Having logic in their arguments isn't one of their requirements.

Newspaper articles are meant to provide balance on actual news instead the Mail just publish opinions based up with an obvious lack of knowledge, I'm surprised anybody even buys it anymore.

Filbo Spirit articles are very well written and insughtful yet incredibly he/they didn't make it as a journalist yet shit like that constitutes 'journalism'.

10 days left for the Club to respond to the Football League.

As far as we are aware, there has been no consultation with us as fans since the FL canvassed its Clubs in late December. We have tonight written to the Club to ask them to open a dialogue with us all as fans prior to feeding back to the Football League.

We have urged them to follow in Portsmouth, Huddersfield, Peterborough, Bristol City etc's footsteps and communicate with the Supporters.

As time is running out, it is becoming fairly urgent for us as fans to contact the Club and let our feelings be known in this case. In this regard, we should be grateful if each pro-safe standing individual would take a few minutes to e-mail the Club imploring them to consult with us ahead of what will hopefully be 'Four x Yes' in February.

We will be drafting a template e-mail for those short on time but generally believe a message from the heart will have more effect.

I do like this idea that bringing back standing in football (no-one has stood in a football ground for 20 years) will bring out the inner hooligan in all of us.

I agree Jim is undoubtedly the best person at the club to contact. He's a genuine Leicester fan and his appointment in his current role is one of the best non player appointments the club has made.

I don't believe that's ever been the case, newspapers have always followed the line and or political view dictated by their owners or via a suitably selected Editor.

 

I believe only the BBC is required by law to provide a balanced and unbiased view, Even they have trouble being accused by both the left and the right of being biased against them.

Sent them quite a long email in the end. Here's what I wrote:

 

 

Dear Leicester City Football Club
 
I am writing in regards to the imminent discussions taking place between the Football League and it's clubs on the subject of standing areas at football grounds, and the possibility of them being implemented in the UK.
 
I am yet another one of the majority of football fans who is pro-choice on the safe standing debate, and would like to see supporters given the opportunity to stand behind rail seats in a designated section of the ground. I think that with these forthcoming meetings in mind, it was my duty to make my voice heard on the matter.
 
Since stadiums were made all-seater, thousands of fans have continued to stand behind their seats at football matches, week after week. This is a significant indication that a large percentage of football fans wish to stand, as even after being discouraged for twenty years, they clearly prefer to watch football that way. After doing much research into rail seats, I can say with much confidence that they will offer a much safer, more enjoyable and more practical experience than the current one.
 
Many of the people who oppose the safe-standing idea offer rather ignorant arguments which demonstrate a clear lack of research into the matter. I feel it is important that these people are educated, and once they are, become open minded and objective enough to make a decision based on rational, forward thinking viewpoints. They should also be grown up enough to admit the obvious: That the option to stand at football matches is desired, nay, demanded by 90% of the paying public. Their are numerous public polls, votes, articles and discussions that prove this.
 
As a summary, this is why I support rail seats:
 
SAFETY: Fans currently stand behind seats at football matches. This can be hazardous at times as people can trip over said seats. With rail seating this is not an issue, as each supporter has a rail seat in front of them, going up to about hip height. This reduces the chances of a fall, and, despite some people's reluctance to acknowledge facts, make it impossible for a surge, like the ones prevalent in 1980s terraces, to occur.
 
CONVENIENCE AND PRACTICALITY: It is no secret that there are often disagreements at football matches about standing and sitting. Some fans want to stand, and some want to sit. Sometimes, these two different types of supporters end up in the same area of the ground, which can be inconvenient. In these situations, one party can be left disgruntled, if not both. I propose a designated area of a football ground for standing, it's size subject to demand (likely to be no bigger than 10% of the stadium for the first few years), where people who wish to stand can do so, without affecting those who want to sit.
 
ATMOSPHERE: It should be in the club's best interests to improve the atmosphere. A positive, loud atmosphere will entice supporters to come back week after week, and continue to hand over their hard earned money to the club. For many fans, this is a bigger factor than how well the team is doing. On a personal level, I have been more put off going to the football when the atmosphere has been poor than when the team has been under performing. A happy atmosphere is a happy club. It's addictive, it's inspiring.
 
Not only that, but atmosphere affects matches. Ask players. Ask managers. A crowds attitude and volume can make a huge psychological difference in football.
 
It is widely accepted that standing up assists people in their attempts to be vocal. It is why world leaders stand up to make speeches and great historical figures of the past have done the same to deliver a stirring and passionate address. And it is also why the most vocal football fans stand together in a group to chant their team's name or the name of a player. Standing goes hand in hand with atmosphere.
 
ATTENDANCES AND FINANCE: Not only will rail seats be cheap to install, but they will almost certainly attract more fans to matches, which means more money in the kitty for clubs like LCFC! Furthermore, it's popularity will grow over the years. Just look how many people used to stand at the football back in the 40, 50s and 60s (when attendances were universally the highest) before they were conditioned to sit down. Given the option again, it will become something people want to be a part of again. And if that example is too old, how about looking to our good friends the Germans, who have the healthiest crowds in Europe (yep, better than those in the Premiership or La Liga), in grounds that include huge stands filled with thousands of fans standing behind rail seats.
 
FREEDOM: Not only will fans have a freedom of choice, but standing in itself creates a feeling of freedom. This will undoubtedly reduce tensions between not only fans, but also between fans and stewards, as well as the fans and the club. In this day and age, supporters often feel targeted and criminalized, when really, all they want, is the freedom to stand up. Is that really too much to ask? I think some would be surprised at the positive impact this psychological freedom will have on football fans and the experience for all on match day.
 
 
There is one other thing I feel I should mention. Whenever the safe-standing debate arises, certain people feel the need to bring up the Hillsborough disaster. Supporters of safe-standing find this strange, as that tragic incident has little relevance to the campaign for rail seats, for the following reasons:
  • Rail seats, which would be used if safe-standing became a reality, are nothing like the terraces that were in use at Hillsborough that day. They allow no scope for surges or overcrowding.
  • Fences, which people were crushed to death against that day, no longer surround football pitches in the UK, making a similar crush impossible.
  • Better ticketing systems mean that there is no way that many fans would be let into an area of that size. In short, overcrowding of that kind is not possible in modern football.
  • Even the Taylor report did not attribute the deaths of those people to standing.
The truth is, as horrible as that day was, it should not be used as an easy comeback for those who simply have no other argument against rail seating. We must make decisions based on mature, calm reasoning, and not the hysterical ramblings of the ill-informed. The past is the past, it should not be forgotten, but neither should it halt progress for the sake of being sensitive to the people who lost their loved ones. I support safe-standing because I believe it will be good for the vast majority of people. We should not be against it just to appease the feelings of a few.
 
Liverpool fans should note that a huge portion of their fans stand home and away, and that their campaign for justice over the last 25 years eventually proved that it was the authorities, and not the fans or something as simple as people standing up, that were at fault for the disaster. Thus, I feel their opposition to safe-standing betrays their work over the years and insults the 96 themselves.
 
So there you have it. In short, that is my argument for rail seating, and the reasons why I feel that LCFC should be fully backing this campaign to bring safe standing to the UK.
 
The club's support could be a huge boost for the campaign. If the good people at Leicester City Football Club do feel that it's supporter's wishes should be heeded, then I strongly urge them to not only answer 'yes' to those four questions the Football League have asked you, but also to publicly back the safe-standing movement, so that it may gather pace.
 
More than anyone, it is the club's responsibility to support it's fans, the people who unconditionally give their love to their team. Please, I ask you, to take them seriously, really listen to their views, and act for the majority.  Do not wait for somebody else to make something happen, it is time for big, proud clubs like Leicester City to take an active role in something that is very important to a great many fans. Only then will we actually be able change things for the better.
