stix Posted 15 May 2013 Posted 15 May 2013 Going to Cuba for 2 weeks next month. Someone please tell me it's gonna be amazing. Thanks. There's a guy on here who's been there a good few times, goes by the name Mickey O'Neill I think. I'm sure he'll give you the lowdown if you PM him bud.
James. Posted 15 May 2013 Posted 15 May 2013 All inclusive in Cayo Coco mate, could be a struggle to pull in any time at Havana, as much as I'd like to. 6 hour drive or a flight isn't ideal! Such a waste to go to Cuba and not actually see the country, never understood why people would go all the way there for an all inclusive.
Ozwin Posted 15 May 2013 Author Posted 15 May 2013 Anyone applied for a passport recently? Had to apply for my first adult one today and there was a right queue so I'm a bit worried it's going to take ages. I read somewhere that I might need to go for an interview too. Right load of faffing about all this!
Guest lcfc80 Posted 15 May 2013 Posted 15 May 2013 Did Sydney for 4 days, then New Zealand for the England cricket then Singapore for a few days on the way back in March, that was good Week in Antigua in June Paris in October for the Arc de Triomphe horse racing Singapore for a weekend then on to Perth, Oz for 2 weeks for the Ashes test

If you take it all to the post office filled in just pay for the rapid check one and they do it all there so you know it will be all ok then send it off, should only take 4-5 days
Ozwin Posted 15 May 2013 Author Posted 15 May 2013 I took it in earlier, did the check and send thing but didn't ask for the rapid service cos it's like £100 odd or something. Just got the standard one for about £80 all together, no real rush really. With it being my first I'm going to need an interview, just wondering how long it'll be before I know?

The check thing should be all you need to do. Are you British?
Ozwin Posted 15 May 2013 Author Posted 15 May 2013 Yeah, just been reading up on it. If it's your first passport then they need to interview you to prevent ID fraud, it's no biggy. And yeah, I'm British.
Guest lcfc80 Posted 15 May 2013 Posted 15 May 2013 Are you sure? The check thing should be all you need to do. Are you British? just looked and it said you 'may' need an interview. I wouldn't worry about it, it does say on the gov site up to 6 weeks but if you've done the check thing I'd imagine you'll be fine, but a long time since I got mine (didn't need an interview then)

SOCCERROO FOX Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 Such a waste to go to Cuba and not actually see the country, never understood why people would go all the way there for an all inclusive. Couldn't agree more, never been one for just sitting on a beach doing fook all after about 3 days i would be bored out of my mind. I need to see and experience the culture or see a hell of alot of sport. Did Sydney for 4 days, then New Zealand for the England cricket then Singapore for a few days on the way back in March, that was good Week in Antigua in June Paris in October for the Arc de Triomphe horse racing Singapore for a weekend then on to Perth, Oz for 2 weeks for the Ashes test Sounds quality mate, I went to the Auckland test for a day which was good.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 Off to New York a week tomorrow. It kind of slipped my mind with the marathon training and all. Also looking to book a weekend in Prague with the missus. Anyone have any hotel recommendations for there? Can you tell me about that roof top biergarten in New York that you went to, wouldn't mind heading there the view looked amazing. For Prague if you were staying with mates and not the hugs and kisses (as no doubt she will want close to 5 star like most women), this hostel was pretty awesome, a little out of town but there was a tram stop out the front and subway a short walk. It was clean and big rooms, i think it was an old hospital of some sort. http://www.plushostels.com/plusprague

I think we fluked our way up there though by getting in the lift as some guests did. I think you need a card to operate the lift. I can't be too sure though, we'd just spent two hours at an all you can drink champagne brunch. I'm staying with the missus in Prague so we found ourselves a hotel with a free cheeseboard. Important things first. I'll bare the other one in mind though if I go back with the lads!
Ozwin Posted 16 May 2013 Author Posted 16 May 2013 Anyone ever been to New York on their own before? It's probably the one place I want to visit in my lifetime but it's quite expensive and I don't think it'd be easy to rope mates into coming with me. My dream is to go in December around Christmas as I think it'd just be wicked. The whole tipping culture scares me though.

My dream is to go in December around Christmas as I think it'd just be wicked. The whole tipping culture scares me though. I'm going on my own in August, I've been on overseas trips with and with out mates and it's just as good with out mates. Gives you more self confidence to go out and meet people and you can do your own thing with out having to compromise and get stuck going to places you aren't interested in but your mates are. Best thing to do as a solo traveller is to stay at a hostel, where there is heaps of solo travellers. Did solo around Europe for 4 out of the 5 months and not once was i ever alone or bored, i would meet people at hostels and join with them for a bit and sometimes travel with them for a week or 2 then go your seperate ways and then meet up again, then find new people, it's awesome fun. I've stayed in contact with a lot of the people I meet on my travels and caught up with a few of them. 2 weeks ago i went to a wedding of a girl i meet whilst in Europe. I'm staying here in New York, they have a bar and tours so i'm sure i'll see and meet people. http://www.hinewyork.org/ Not too sure about tipping either but will soon figure it out.
Ozwin Posted 16 May 2013 Author Posted 16 May 2013 I always thought hostels were properly grim places for trampy looking people. That actually looks rather good! I didn't realize they organized stuff too, thought it was just somewhere to sleep and that was that, will look into that some more, sounds brill.
lavrentis Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 i was at some in Japan which had a bar on which was pretty cool, gave a free drink to everyone staying there when they arrived. they are social places
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 Hostels are awesome, but you can get some really really bad ones if you're not careful. The ones that have a few hostels around the place are generally the better ones, nomads, base, plus, wombats, hostelling international, yha. Most of them are clean and really fun, plus they are pretty safe too just put ya luggage in a locker. Alot of them can arrange free tours or normal tours not run by the hostel. The free pub crawls are always really good fun and an awesome way of meeting people, i did one in an Edinburgh Hostel and the next day the hostel offered me a job. (Plus there normally cheap as they organise drink specials.)
Ozwin Posted 16 May 2013 Author Posted 16 May 2013 I am genuinely properly considering New York in December at one of these hostels. First of all who's going to New York in December? Soppy minded bastards like me that's who! Flights aren't that expensive either atm. Would be absolutely amazing.

Get yourself on HostelWorld.com and search around for the good ones. It's the easiest way if meeting people in a new place if you don't mind sharing a room. Done it many a time. Anyway, I went to New York on my own this past week, sort of. I was visiting a friend who lives out there so I had two days on my own and three days hanging around with him. I'd highly recommend it. I managed to get over the play-off debacle by going to an all you can drink champagne brunch and afterwards ending up flunking my way into a jacuzzi on a hotel's rooftop bar with views across Manhatten (because we walked in pretending to be guests). Do it
Guest Col city fan Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 Going to go to Malta for the Air-Rally competition, in a month's time, for a week (as Step-Father taking part, and he invited me). Then Dinard, France, in August for a week. Our family has a timeshare in Malta mate. Prob go there sometime over the summer. Love it..
The Year Of The Fox Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 Has anyone ever been to Venice? We're flying into Treviso late on a Monday night and require a transfer from Treviso to the other side of Venice. We're staying about 30mins train ride south of the city- it's hard to pinpoint exactly at the moment! But how much are transfers from Treviso to Venice itself? Which is the cheapest way to get there? Our family has a timeshare in Malta mate. Prob go there sometime over the summer. Love it.. Where in Malta? We stayed in Sliema in 96. Nice place (the whole island) but too bloody hot in July!

I went to New York last January, I'm stating the obvious but it was bloody cold! -15 without wind chill which was probably closer to -20. Fantastic place though, would love to go back in the summer
