Super Bowl XLVII: Ravens vs 49ers

This has probably been the shittiest Hype Week before a Super Bowl ever. This once was a great storyline: the Harbaugh brothers coaching vs. each other (not to mention the subplots of a hot young QB hitting the big time, a former underachieving QB that has finally shown his promise, and Ray Lewis and Randy Moss's last hurrahs). But this has disintegrated into a dumbass backup defensive back talking shit about gays and a circus sideshow about Lewis and performance enhancing drugs that I just wish they would play the game already so this would end. Hell, this has been so tedious that I kind of wished they would have just gone into the Superdome and kicked off on Thursday afternoon.

I expect this to be a close game with an exciting finish, as both teams are built similarly. As for betting, I'm tempted to take the Ravens and the points along with the under, thinking both teams will be a little nervous tonight. I'm not touching any prop bets and I never do.

I might stay up for this as I'm off tomorrow. What time is kick off?

I'm pretty sure kickoff will be around 11:30 pm in the UK.

The only things that are XL are the fans

From an American perspective, as here its on BBC, would it be the same without the adds?

As I've watched a few streams of NFL games on American channels, the adverts are ****ing annoying every min or so

On the bandwagon for this. Watching with a mate who's fairly into it so he can explain things to me as I really don't understand it all that well.

I like watching American Football, but what gets me is that the Ravens were only formed 16 years ago. It's a bit like MK Dons being in the FA Cup final. I've never liked the 49s as I remember their supreme dominance of the late 80s and early 90s which was when I first took a proper interest in the game and liking them struck me as being too much like liking Man U. However, I hope the 49ers kick their ass as a proper team with a proper history.

Can't wait for this - tomorrow has been booked off work for ages and can't wait to get underway. Hoping for a Ravens win but after the 49ers destroyed us on the way to the superbowl, it's hard to see past them if Kaepernick performs.

Best advice is to stick with it. Yes it is very stop start but if it's a close game then it gets to be really 'edge of your seat stuff' in the last quarter.

Can somebody explain the rules to me (just the basics!) I tried to watch this last year but as I didn't know WTF was going on I switched over as I was bored in about 10mins

4 attempts to get the ball 10 yards past the yellow line, 6 points for a touchdown and another point for adding the conversion

Each team has four attempts (known as downs) to move the ball 10 yards down the field either by running with or throwing it. If they acheive it then they get another set of four downs etc until they run or throw the ball to a player in the end zone scoring a touchdown. (worth six points). After this they can kick the ball between the posts (for one point) or try again to run / throw it to a player in the end zone (for two points). If after four downs, they have failed to get 10 yards, the other team gets possession which is why on the 4th attempt, the normal situation is that the team attacking will kick the ball away, either trying to get it between the posts (for three points) or just as far away as possible.

Four quarters of 15 minutes but the play and clock stops frequently so games seem a long time.

That's exactly how I got in to following American Football. Best mate was on the verge of obsessing with it so he invited a few of us over. Actually learnt quite a lot throughout the night!

On a sidenote, I still remember this from last year

I'm the same. Never did like Joe Montana & the 49ers back then.

I've got family in Boston so decided at a young age to support all things New England.......the Patriots, Red Sox & Celtics. The Patriots had never done anything, the Red Sox had the Curse of the Bambino & I only caught the arse-end of the Larry Bird era. There's been some quite depressing years along the way

That has certainly transformed in recent years. Seems almost strange that the Patriots & Tom Brady won't be appearing at this years Superbowl.

Will try & stay awake for it........

This might help
  • An important part of any throw to be complete is that the receiving player must have control of he ball before the end of that play, if not it's an incomplete pass and the ball returns to the last line of scrimmage.
  • If a player catches the ball as it crosses the side line he must have both feet on the ground inside the field of play, it doesn't matter where the ball is.
  • A touchdown is when any part of the ball passes the plane on the field side of touchdown line, irrespective of whether the player is in-bounds or not.
  • The fourth down is usually a kick, unless the offensive team are deep into the opponents half and are chasing the game.
  • Offensive blockers or defenders cannot hold an opponent unless he has the ball

Come on the Niners. I've seen them win three superbowls, now let's have the fourth one.

Kaepernick -amazing player. Watch out for the defense - Willis,Bowman, Justin Smith, Aldon Smith, Goldson and Whitner.Would be great if Randy Moss gets into the end zone

The Ravens story is a little different. The Cleveland Browns were moved to Baltimore 16 years ago after a dick move by their owner. As a compromise to Cleveland, the NFL awarded an expansion team to the city and with it the Cleveland Browns name, colors, and records.

The circumstances surrounding the Browns' contentious move to Baltimore are somewhat ironic, as Baltimore itself had a historic NFL team--the Colts--relocate in 1984 (to Indianapolis). The move angered the fans and the city, and in order to avoid both an angry mob and sheriffs from blocking the move (the mayor and city government tried to file injunctions to prevent the move), the Colts franchise packed up their gear into trucks and drove off under cover of darkness. The "Midnight Move" infuriated Baltimore fans, and resentment still lingers about this almost 30 years later despite the city getting another NFL franchise and winning the Super Bowl since.
