purpleronnie Posted 18 June 2013 Posted 18 June 2013 Finally the 'roos are there! Now to save the pennies Given your group you might as well have started when they were announced. Might aswell put some aside for the next one too.
OzFox Posted 18 June 2013 Posted 18 June 2013 Just got back. Scrappy game, muted atmosphere and feels like a bit of a damp squib compared to other recent qualifications. Still, job done. Jesus took the goal well
Ford Super Sunday Posted 18 June 2013 Posted 18 June 2013 The protests are the trail of destruction caused by Blatter's ego-trip into being a last legacy to the world. Never has a man's desire to be such a cult hero in spot seen so much upheaval. Whilst a potentially unpopular opinion, the riots in Brazil and the World Cup in South Africa have shown that World Cups should only take place in nations where the structure (or main bulk) is in place before the bid has even been lodged, seven years before. I'm sorry, but the World Cup in Brazil has seen billions spent on new stadia, several of which will have no legacy or use to them once the tournament is over. The World Cup in South Africa saw the country move people to create stadia which are lame ducks to this day. In 2002, the Korea/Japan World Cup saw the two countries create monster stadia, many of which are largely underused now. In the case of the previous two, the money spent could've gone in so many more important places, the sickening inequality in those countries for one. World Cups should only go to nations who have the stadia. But not just that, nations who can justify the cost and guarantee the arenas built will be utilised to their maximum after the tournament. England, France, Germany, USA, Australia, Italy, Spain et al. It may be a small pool of countries therefore that ever get the World Cup, but it'd save terrible tournaments and crippling legacies. The WC went to South Africa and Qatar on the basis of ego (and in the latter case also money) for Sepp Blatter to say he took the World Cup to uncharted places, never mind the cost or consequence. Does Sepp care South Africa has several lame duck stadia? Of course not, because he'll be forever known as the man who took the World Cup to Africa. If this stupid way of distributing the World Cup is to continue, then there has to be guarantees about the legacy and what will happen. At the moment, it's a shambles and the next opportunity for a World Cup in a country that can cope will be 2026. Can't wait.
Amin Posted 18 June 2013 Posted 18 June 2013 South Korea could be in danger of missing out on the auto places. 10 minutes to go in both South Korea vs Iran (0-1) and Uzbekistan vs Qatar (3-1). A 3 goal swing would see Uzbekistan through.
Kitchandro Posted 18 June 2013 Posted 18 June 2013 I reckon a lot of it is down to attendance at matches. I've been to plenty of Leicester matches, shared the joy and pain, highs and lows. I've been to a couple of England games when I was much younger so it just doesn't feel the same, I don't wake up and travel to the game, get the anticipation. I think people who want their clubs to perform better than their country base it on being part of the club, possibly also due to the tribal nature of supporting a club compared to a country, in that any success the club has is shared by fewer people instead of a whole nation. It would be great if England entertained at finals and even won something, but like you, Leicester success comes first in a choice scenario. The thing is, I used to really care about England, as did my dad. It seems the last 10 years have ruined it for so many people.
Amin Posted 18 June 2013 Posted 18 June 2013 So close for Uzbekistan! They won 5-1 but South Korea are through by a goal difference of 1. Iran won the group.
Manwell Pablo Posted 18 June 2013 Posted 18 June 2013 What ungrateful shits. Bulldozing homes, passing the financial burden, corruption and getting regularly tear-gased is a small price to pay for Sepp Blatter's circus. As stated, If they don't want it I know plenty of other countrys who would be more than happy to take it off their hands.
21st Century Fox Posted 18 June 2013 Posted 18 June 2013 As stated, If they don't want it I know plenty of other countrys who would be more than happy to take it off their hands. I still don't entirely understand what that means. They have no say it the matter, it's between the Brazilian government and FIFA. They're just highlighting the issues that have arisen for the Brazilian people due to the World Cup being staged there.
MC Prussian Posted 18 June 2013 Posted 18 June 2013 Planning wasn't the best, but who expected serious planning from Brazil? I know they've upped their standard of living quite tremendously over the past few years, attracting employees from around the world. Yet the speed of this growth is starting to take its toll. As has the speed of construction leading up to the biggest football tournament on the planet. The World Cup will definitely cost a lot more money than first predicted (here's a shocker). Not so sure about the underuse of the venues. Brazil is football-crazy and I have no doubt they'll fill those stadiums on a regular basis - provided the ticket prices remain untouched.
21st Century Fox Posted 18 June 2013 Posted 18 June 2013 Apparently they've build stadiums in Brasilia, Cuiaba and Manaus, none of which have top-flight teams and of the average attendance in Brasilia pulls in fewer than 50,000 spectators, for which they've just built a 71,000 seater stadium. “I find it ridiculous,†Romario, a member of Parliament who was the top scorer on Brazil’s 1994 World Cup-winning squad, said in an e-mail. “Obviously they didn’t do a financial viability study for these stadiums for after the tournament.â€
Dan Posted 18 June 2013 Posted 18 June 2013 It's a shambles. I struggle to take any of it seriously when it's ran by absolute scum.

I heard they've built one that is around 80,000 which will be used by a club with an average attendance of 600.

Amin Posted 18 June 2013 Posted 18 June 2013 Average attendance in the top Brazilian league is pretty low.
MC Prussian Posted 19 June 2013 Posted 19 June 2013 Average attendance in the top Brazilian league is pretty low. Just read about it online - I thought it to be different, but football ticket prices in Brazil are very expensive for the common worker. Such a shame that the clubs exclude so many people from their favourite pasttime. On a sidenote, Sao Paulo city council has just announced that they'll put the public transportation ticket prices back to where they were before.
Pride_Of_The_Midlands Posted 19 June 2013 Posted 19 June 2013 eh? Wanted Uzbekistan to qualify ahead of Iran.
Kitchandro Posted 19 June 2013 Posted 19 June 2013 Wanted Uzbekistan to qualify ahead of Iran. Uzbekistan are assholes. Fvck you, motherfvckers!
Jordan Posted 28 June 2013 Posted 28 June 2013 FIFA dismiss claims that they are exploiting the citizens of its tournament host nations for the benefit of the champagne and caviar crowd by... announcing that Champagne Taittinger will be the Official Champagne of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/soccer-dirty-tackle/fifa-announce-official-champagne-2014-world-cup-brazilians-194938532.html

What will they do next? Appoint Queen Marie-Antoinette as the FIFA World CupTM Official Catering Consultant? I'd still like to be there, mind.
Freeman's Wharfer Posted 4 September 2013 Posted 4 September 2013 Anyone else on here made concrete plans to go? Me and three mates are flying out on 8th June from Heathrow and staying for the whole tournament. We've picked a route and have just chosen host cities we want to visit rather than trying to specifically follow England (if we happen to catch one of our games if we get there then great but just being there is enough for us!). Our route is as follows: Fortaleza 08/06/14 - 19/06/14 Natal 19/06/14 - 25/06/14 Recife 25/06/14 - 30/06/14 Salvador 30/06/14 - 10/07/14 Rio de Janeiro 10/07/14 - 14/07/14 That puts us in host cities for 8 matches so we've applied for tickets for all of those matches but we're imagining demand will be high so getting to two or three matches will be a success in our eyes. Any other Foxes fans planning to be in any of those cities at the same time? The reason I ask is that, whilst we have 21 out of 36 nights of accommodation already booked, finding cheap and available accommodation is getting increasingly difficult. I thought that if there are any Foxestalkers who have sorted accommodation/need accommodation then we could pool ideas/findings/tips. It's proving an expensive trip so far but hopefully a once-in-a-lifetime style opportunity!
