Boston Marathon hit by explosions

You would think so, but the training must have been damaged by US and British operations in Afghanistan and Pakistan. If of course this is al-Qaeda, which is unclear.

The frightening thing is that anybody with a GCSE in Chemistry could potentially put a bomb together capable of maiming dozens of people, but in this case the organisation was crude.

I actually wonder whether this was al-Qaeda or any other Islamist group at all, leaving bags in bins doesn't seem to fit the Islamist modus operandi of turning themselves into the bomb. You need only look at Oklahoma City to realise that America has its share of enemies within.

True, but this doesn't seem to fit their M.O. either. As I said earlier, the homegrown nutjobs in the US tend either to shoot/blow up schools or universities with which they are intimately linked, or go after a target with a clear political objective (Government building/abortion clinic).

So this one is strange either way.

Yes, but more effective than these bombs.

BTW - phone networks taken down in Boston...very late if you ask me!

Were they set off by phone?

Not known, but possibly.

If phone networks are down, how are people meant to contact families or friends who were part of the marathon or vice versa?!

It's very upsetting for people, but mobile networks go down in the UK the moment there is a terrorist attack.

They went down for around four hours in London in 2005, even though the attack was by suicide bombers.

Another thought, they haven't found any heads, so probably not suicide bombers. If someone of Arabic appearance, in the US, had left a rucksack somewhere, I find it very hard to believe someone wouldn't have reported it.

Guy on BBC news just made a good point in that Al Qaieda's attacks are almost exclusively suicide bombs and this does not look like their work.

As others have said, this looks like an attack by the enemy within. Also, to get away with planting bombs in such a heavily policed area - the perpetrators must have blended in pretty easily.

The World is mad.

With Families of the Newtown tragedy sitting in VIP seats near the explosions is one of the most sickening things about it.

Boston is one of the most famous Marathons and the World's oldest Marathon, so you can see why some mad sick people would use it as a target.

NBC also reported that marathon runners who finished the race are going to hospitals to give blood for any survivors who were injured. Fair play. Humanity restored a bit.

I think RTE and NBC did.

Fox as well.

The last week really hasnt been a good one for the human race.

Hope the Bostonians who donated to 'the cause' take a long look in the mirror tonight.

Sympathy to all the innocents killed.

I was thinking this was one of the most depressing news days for ages even before I heard about this

Titanic sinking. Hillsborough tragedy. Lincoln assassinated. Today...
