Deucalion Posted 15 April 2013 Share Posted 15 April 2013 What? That makes no sense. Just cos 2 out of 3 went off doesn't mean it was unorganised. It isn't on the scale of Al Qaeda. They were known for large explosions in multiple places with many, many more casualties. Al Qaeda have access to much more sophisticated and powerful explosives than used here. Look at some of the IRA attacks. They had access to Libyan semtex (C4) and their bombs were much more powerful than this. It isn't carried out by an organisation or individual with major backing. It's a bomb made in a garden shed.

Al-Qaeda doesn't exist the way it did ten years ago. They simply do not have the capacity to pull off large scale attacks like the Bali nightclub bombings any more, and have long since been perceived as having to switch to micro-cells that are extremely hard to detect never mind tackle. Bilo Posted 15 April 2013 Share Posted 15 April 2013 Good point. But surely they could cause more destruction than this? You would think so, but the training must have been damaged by US and British operations in Afghanistan and Pakistan. If of course this is al-Qaeda, which is unclear. The frightening thing is that anybody with a GCSE in Chemistry could potentially put a bomb together capable of maiming dozens of people, but in this case the organisation was crude. I actually wonder whether this was al-Qaeda or any other Islamist group at all, leaving bags in bins doesn't seem to fit the Islamist modus operandi of turning themselves into the bomb. You need only look at Oklahoma City to realise that America has its share of enemies within.

A horrific bomb attack in Boston is eminently more horrifying to us as it could potentially happen here. The victims are far more relatable as they lead similar lives. A civil war, as in Syria, against a dictator, is not something we can relate to. It doesn't help that it is very difficult to get media cameras into the country for proper reporting of the situation. Nothing to do with the sanctimonious rubbish of a Western life being worth more or less than someone else's.
