quality out of contract players

Bridcutt out of contract, probably off to prem though.

Swear he's contracted til 2015, makes me question the credibility of that site.

Ebanks Blake and/or Doyle (depending on how many strikers we get rid of) and maybe Eardle as well.

Shittu is a good shout....only because I've always found the name amusing, similar to when we got Dickov

Yes I am immature at times

Kevin Doyle yes. Unsure why so many want Eubanks Blake he is donkey.

Remember when Doyle was wanted by Chelsea!!!

According to a Wolves fan I've spoken to, apparently Doyle is a completely lazy waste of space who is nothing like the player he was at Reading.

Ebanks Blake,Jerome Thomas,Liam Trotter, zoltan Gera,Yossi Benayoun,Maynor Figaroa,Florent Malouda! I'm not saying sign them all! But we lack experience,we lack muscle and we lack flair.  All these issues could be resolved with these kind of players available.  I'd also like to see us sign Mathew Upson! Great experience alongside Morgan....

Could definitely see Pearson being in for these three and I think they'd be quality additions.

Quality and out of contract rarely go hand in hand.

Nonsense. There are plenty of reasons a player could be coming to the end of his contract - PL players who don't feature in their club's plans, good players who are looking to move to better clubs at the ends of their contracts... just because a player is out of contract, doesn't mean he's crap. There are bargains to be had every single year.

Still there are far too many people here thinking that real life football is like a game of football manager, particularly that guy who named his preferred team next season with 5 free transfers

Well I doubt that whoever's managing the side will have much cash to splash around next season, so they're going to have to look more towards bargains, free players and loans. Luckily, there seems to be a lot of talent coming onto the market out of contract, so if we act fast we could get a couple of bargains. Ebanks-Blake, Thomas, Trotter and Shittu/Baptiste would all improve our team significantly and they wouldn't cost us anything in transfer fees.

Chris Cohen signed a new long term deal earlier this season.

According to John Percy (from the telegraph), Leicester are in for Alex Baptiste on a bosman (free transfer).

See nothing on Baptiste lately.

Says he is in talks with Derby, but the deal hit a snag.

I can only think of 2 reasons a player would be out of contract.

#1 Refused to sign a contract because thinks that he'll get a higher wage offer from another club once his contract expires

#2 Wasn't considered good enough to be even a squad player for his team

In order to sign the fomer you end up paying extortionate wages instead of transfer fees which i actually think is a worse situation than paying a large transfer fee. The latter are rarely worth it and will also cost alot of money in wages whilst having no resale value, while some veterans have made big contributions to championship teams in the past, there are alot who simply turn up for the pay packet.

I much prefer Nigels method of signing youngsters who will not be on high wages with the odd wildcard scouted by Walsh that we've never heard of before and won't be in a bidding war with every other championship club over.

If Pearson is still in charge, then don't expect any quality players to arrive, just the average dross that he normally brings in.  :yesyes:  :yesyes:

I dont think 'James, De laet, Wood, Knockaert, Marshall, Morgan, Keane, Drinkwater' is 'average dross'.

#1 is nonsense - it's too black and white to say it's completely money motivated the whole time. Good players at small clubs let their contracts run down all the time because they want to sign for a bigger club at the end of it, it doesn't mean they're necesarily going to demand massive wages.

#2 if a player isn't considered good enough to be a squad player for a premier league team, that doesn't mean he's not good enough for a Championship team. Alternatively, players who aren't featuring for their club at PL level might allow their contracts to run down so they can sign for a smaller club who will be able to guarentee them more playing time.

If you can't see that there are a lot of bargains to be had on the free transfer market then you're mad. I'm not saying that every player on a free transfer is worth looking at, but there are a lot of good ones and it's just a case of sorting the wheat from the chaff. With the onset of FFP, it's something that more and more clubs are going to have to look at.

It's something that Pearson has done successfully in the past anyway - Bruno Berner? Lloyd Dyer? Chris Weale? Robert Koren at Hull? I'm sure there's more, but these have all been good players for the clubs he signed them for and they were all free transfers. I could list dozens of others for other clubs which have been beneficial, but I think you get the idea.
