Leeds is the best of those cities. I was there last year and it´s the lack of greenery that made it a concrete jungle (like Birmingham). The indoor shopping centre, arcades and corn exchange are fine but the rest is a bit depressing.

The nicest big cities in the UK are London, Cardiff and Edinburgh (Bristol has some good parts too). In general, the smaller British cities are more pleasant: Cambridge, Oxford, Chester, Bath, Lincoln, Durham etc.

Was shocked at the level of poverty, open dealing etc in Bath city centre when we went. Feels like the kind of place where they just pretend those kind of people aren't there.

I’m very surprised you linked to that!

The examples used show that the creator might have an axe to grind, but the basic explanation of the fallacy itself is sound, which is what I was looking for.

Especially when there was such a blatant use of said fallacy.

Phew, I thought for a moment then maybe you didn’t think all white people were privileged racists!

Leicester city centre is not safe.

Don't go anywhere near it.

Christ you sum up the snowflake wokiness that has unfortunately destroyed our country. In my day men had a backbone, now they’re spineless woke left wing lunatics. We need to end this madness before it ends us

And thank you for a superb example of the False Premise Fallacy. :D

But I fear we're veering somewhat off topic here.

I don't like option 3.

I happen to work in Highways for the County Council.

If we were split into a North and South, every function we perform (and many others, such as social care) would be split into two. It'd be really complicated and create a lot of duplication. It'd basically do the exact opposite of the intention of Local Government Reorganisation.

Except many upper-tier authorities already share services. Herefordshire and Worcestershire share social services, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire have a shared highways function, and here, Leicestershire and Rutland already share services. Option two retains exactly what we have now: a county council that is around £100 million in debt and is projected to reach £450 million of debt related to SEN education within four years. If change is going to happen, which I do not think it needs to, as I do not think the current system is broken, then we have to try something new rather than repeat the same model that has already been shown not to work. Option three at least retains some of the identities of the boroughs and districts, which, because of the issues they deal with, understand what local residents want better than a single large county council that is more removed from the needs of the people who actually live here

This thread exists as a fascinating example of how British online discourse, particularly regarding immigration, has changed over the last twenty years. You could write a PhD on it.

Not sure how well known it is but Leicestershire and Nottingham City already share employee services (HR and payroll). Though their implementation of a new Oracle payroll system apparently didn't go well.

I can understand why the city wants/needs to expand.

Yep just genuinely never ceases to amaze me how all those who vociferously hate snowflakes are indeed snowflakes. Like imagine being scared to go into town

It certainly hasn't escaped my notice how modern right wingers are immigration obsessives that are absolute victims about everything.

My parents came here 60 years ago and they are saddened at the state of Leicester!

Unlike the vast majority of immigrants today, that generation assimilated, worked hard and respected the country that gave them security, financial opportunities and opportunities for their children. Now it’s the total opposite.

True. And British people welcomed them and loved them. Pubs used to encourage them to come in and have a pint. "More blacks, more Irish, more dogs" they used to put in the window.

There’s a massive difference between being ‘scared’ to go into Leicester town centre and being utterly depressed at the state of it!

If looking like a third world shit hole is acceptable then it just shows the total lack of pride people have in their own community in today’s society. My parents came here 60 years ago and they are saddened at the state of Leicester!

It doesn't look like a 3rd world shithole, that's just the sort of thing people say to sound hard.

Many recent posts here are referring to the city centre, whereas the thread title is the City of Leicester a dump?

I think some of the more extreme recent comments and observations can, unfortunately, very well apply to some areas of the city.

Working for the City Council social services dep't, took me into some very depressing areas of the city. What's more, I have to say, very much most of the reasons for the state of the area or street, were down to the local residents and not a consequence of poor management by the local authority. Unless, that is, individuals feel they have no responsibilities for their area and even themselves

I don't think that's a right-wing thing to be fair, there are professional victims on all parts of the political spectrum.
