Got an A in Year 10 at GCSE French. Haven't done it since, but can read French just about. Know if enough of the words to be able to work out the whole sentence.

Did German too but that is so ****ing difficult.

Languages are my "thing" - I did a language degree, and now I read linguistic books as my bedtime reading - I really am THAT boring...

:)

- German - fairly fluent with a bit of a Saxon accent.  I have been mistaken for an Ossi by Wessis in the past.

- French was fairly decent when I was 24 but lack of practice means I take a couple of days to get back into it.

- I can understand and make myself understood in Spanish.

- I studied Latin in lunchtimes at college and did a GCSE.  Always stood me in good stead.

- Learned basic level Russian from a "teach yourself" book and cassettes when I was 16 and going out with a girl who worked late shifts.  Can still read write and get myself fed and watered.

- Have basic Hindi (speaking, reading and writing) and therefore a little spoken Urdu.  Started off with "teach yourself", then got into Bollywood films and learned a few songs. This occasionally comes in quite handy for my work.

When I go on holidays abroad, I always try and learn a bit of the language (how it works, critical vocabulary, a few phrases) and see if I can go into shops without speaking any English - I have done this in Holland and Lithuania, and always like to give it a go in Greece.

I tried and failed miserably to learn even basic Arabic, though.  I understand how some apects of it work, but the verbs are a right bugger.

Whenever people say stuff like "Oooh that's clever" I point out that service staff in the hotel and leisure industries across Europe are usually able to converse in several languages.  We should be teaching kids another language from Nursery onwards and adding a third language later.

My wife speaks, French (native), Spanish, German, Italian, and of course English.

Embarrassingly, I speak poor Spanish, weak French, and studied Latin for 4 years (though couldn't hold a conversation in it), but as a root language it helps when trying to read French, or Spanish for that matter.

Yes that’s it , Sandy and Julian used it on Round the Horne and I used to love it . ( even though I hadn’t a clue what they were actually talking about)

When they complained about  "his dirty dishes" I thought that's what they actually meant  :D

I suppose I was just laughing at the campness of it .

Al Read used to crack me up in the same way

.

We used to spend ages trying to learn pig latin and polari .

If only I’d had dedicated more time to actual language classes I might have done a lot better :D

I've got a couple of cassettes of Round the Horne, brilliant. I like Peasemold Gruntfuttock as well.

What would be recommended as the next steps to become fluent in Spanish?

Apart from living in Spain!

Living in Mexico?

I wouldn't mind learning sign language. I printed the basic alphabet yhat I downloaded off the internet.

Funny thing is I was talking about it to my writer's group and one woman said shee knew someone who could use it so I ended up giving her a copy.

Wouldn't mind trying Latin as well. OK it's a dead language but many words we use came from it and understanding where roods of words are from would improve grammar.

Mine too (just in case the Grammar Nazi's are about.)

My first username on the Leicester City Forum was Ancasderana Guesses?

The forum went down hill so thought I'd try this one till I find one better.

Totally agree with introducing language teaching at a very early age. Gets picked up so easily when you're young. My wife speaks fluent French, decent Spanish and basic German. When we have kids we really want to bring then up in an English / French bilingual environment. Then they can learn Spanish at school. Such a great skill to have.

The thing I found most difficult was the structure of learning a language. We as English are actually taught very little about our English language, it's structure and how it's formed. So when your teacher is standing up in class talking about conditional future tense (being the easiest one I remember) you're in effect learning what that means in English (what a conditional future tense looks like/spelt like) and then learning it again in the language you're studying.

Those were my thoughts when studying anyway.

Yes, you are boring.

I mastered Jive by watching every episode of "Shaft" five times in one week and spending a month on holiday in the Seychelles with the original Huggy Bear.

I was damn near fluent in French by the time I was 17 but I've completely lost my tongue for the language, having not used it in years. My French listening skills also suck now, too. I can still read the language quite well, though.
