I was in Spain once and went on a tour. Went in a bar and asked for a beer in Spanish. The bartender did not know what I was saying then said, just speak English, it's simpler.'

I can't get the accent right saying u'no bier' in a Leicester dialect does not help.

Saying the wrong word for beer also doesn't help.

Know a little bit of Mandarin, solid language. Wouldn't be able to last long out there but I know the basics. Properly intrigued by China, the culture and history of it all.

lol lol

Can speak pretty basic Spanish, German and French.

Like Moose says though it's hard to be motivated when so many other cultures speak English so well.

When you speak a different language you have to adjust your accent.

You can't walk into a bar in Paris saying 'GYM MA PELL KEN' in a Leicester accent lol

Sarcasm.

Gujarati.

Basic French.

Very basic Spanish and German.

Rewind a few years and I could have spoken Latin fluently, too, but since A-Levels about 95% has filtered out from my brain and is definitely a dead language in my head.

Some very basic German.

If needed, I could get to the airport. Ask someone's name, age, birthday.

Ask for a coffee, lemonade, red wine. Say please and thank you, hello and goodbye. I can count in German too.

Et tu Zingari?

I know BSL :)

I learnt a bit of BSL when we found out our grand daughter was deaf, but later she had cochlear implants and she rapidly began to speak fairly normally and so we stopped.

Most people don’t realise she is deaf now .

Actually, I quite liked watching Mr Tumble with her  :D i think he's brilliant at what he does .

Donde esta la biblioteca?

I've never actually asked that question!

The most common question would be, 'donde esta las chicas guapas?'!

Las chicas trabajadoras están por allí en la biblioteca, pero las chicas guapas están aqui en mi cama tomando unas cervezas...

;)

English

German

French

And Italian to a certain extent - I'm better at talking than writing (lack of practical use in that department).  :)

A- for Year of the Fox:

"The hard-working girls are over there in the library, but the pretty girls are here in my bed having a few beers" (in my dreams!)

Oui. Je me pal la patisserrie. Tou le monge.

Speak a bit of French. If any Foreigner asks me if I speak there language I love it and waffle away in jibberish until they think I'm mental.

I used to be able to get by in Spanish as I did a GCSE at night school. I'm a bit rusty now though.
