Super_horns Posted 15 July 2013 Posted 15 July 2013 Well they are about as good as the 2 Men's international sides that played this summer - out in the group stages unless they beat France who are rated as the favourites.
Toffee_Fox Posted 15 July 2013 Posted 15 July 2013 Get in Toni, my cousin proving why she should be starting!
steveherbe Posted 15 July 2013 Posted 15 July 2013 IMHO, it's time Powell went. Achieved next to nothing in 15 years, and the players look like they are on an 18-30 break, instead of competing in a tournament. No desire, no passion. Massively disappointed, and I agree with a previous poster, the standard is dreadful. This England 'Girls holiday club' has set the womens game back 20 years, Pearson out, bloody Wellens!
Toffee_Fox Posted 15 July 2013 Posted 15 July 2013 Within possibly 2 games she has set back 3 years of progress that the WSL and Olympics has started, I know so many people including myself who laughed and were laughing at two of those games, and with a family member I shouldn't but on BBC as well anyone watching will not have been impressed by that, they are a great team who before this competition looked very promising but her ability to leave behind players in form, taking injured players and out of form players who are now playing terrible football has killed her.
HEGGSY Posted 15 July 2013 Posted 15 July 2013 Toffee_Fox are you FourthOfficial_? Just curious Correct.
Father Ted Posted 15 July 2013 Posted 15 July 2013 Watched the England-Spain game and was left in absolute stitches after goalkeeping error after error, summed up by a 92nd minute cock up by England's keeper to gift Spain the victory. She went to catch a cross, ball went through her hands, hit her in the face and went in... And Powell reckons her England team could beat the men on technical ability
Leeds Fox Posted 16 July 2013 Posted 16 July 2013 Is it just me, or do the women footballers seem to over emphasise the technique every single time they play the ball? It's like watching someone who has the perfect technique, but zero ability to carry out the actual action. That last bit made no sense, but I'm sure some of you will catch my drift?! On entertainment value alone, this shouldn't be on the main BBC channels, it's dire. I hope this hasn't come across in the wrong way, but I wouldn't watch non-league football on TV, which is about the same standard as women's football. This is the WORLD CUP after all, supposedly footballs showcase.

Leeds Fox Posted 16 July 2013 Posted 16 July 2013 They do it for the cameras, in effect? Not really, it's hard for me to describe, so it's probably just me who thinks it. I'm going to try and explain without sounding sexist, that's not my intention at all... I think it's maybe that the elite male footballers have the talent naturally, and that the women at the same level (WC standard) don't have the same level, and are performing a practiced technique. Such basic topics are far too hard to have a discussion over without the worry that the PC brigade will shoot you down.

I kind of get what you're saying, a lot of their play isn't natural build up, one person has natural ability in the team, number 10, Fara Williams, keep an eye out in the next game and you will see exactly what I mean, she looks for a pass before she has received the ball, she wants it into her feet and a little knock off into someone then off to create space just one touch passing etc where as a lot of them look like they're doing a training drill and therefore their build up play is pathetically slow, some of them you can see have to think through the process of putting an accurate ball along the floor and it might be a brilliant pass but they're either highly out of position or its that slow a pass in the end that they lose possession. Tempo is woeful for a 'possession' side.

Looks like football from a kids TV series when they try and re-create a match.

There is the odd great player like Williams (this sounds sexists and patronising but she plays like a man) but there is some absolute dross. By exposing them to the glare of TV cameras we could be doing more harm than good as it just opens them up to ridicule.
Charnwood Norris Posted 17 July 2013 Posted 17 July 2013 Honestly a think a Leicestershire sunday league teams reserve team could beat some - if not all - of these womens national teams.

It did well, they did well in the Olympics, they beat the likes of Brazil and so on, they won the Cyprus Cup in March (untelevised), there was a lot of debate about the squad before they went, a lot of inform players left out, and plenty of out of form players have gone, in my eyes for the girls it is win-win, they win tomorrow and go through, brilliant, they lose and Hope Powell for the first time in 15 years has her job on the line, they need change and freshness, the squad has too many old players for me, they're predictable and they're being found out.
Charnwood Norris Posted 18 July 2013 Posted 18 July 2013 Iceland has only 2500 registered female players in their country and they get through to the QF
Rincewind Posted 18 July 2013 Posted 18 July 2013 Oh dear. They would do well not to try to emulate the mens England team.
