James. Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 Tried briefly to find a national newspaper article about this and struggled. Probably says something about the robustness of the protest to be honest. Anyway what does everyone think? Do lads' mags like Nuts, Zoo, etc degrade women by presenting them as sex objects? Or is it just a load of ugly women using feminism to hide behind the veneer of low self-esteem? Took this photo outside Liverpool Street Station yesterday. Although I respected the multitasking on show I was less impressed by such a half arsed protest.
Larry_LCFC Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 People in this country simply arent happy unless they have something to whinge, moan and protest about. I dont see lads mags degrading women. The women that feature in them choose to, and get paid a decent amount for doing so. But hey, lets not let the facts get in the way of some feminist martyr trying to make it look like the whole world is against her. Pathetic.
The People's Hero Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 They should just tax them more heavily. I like a tax on the stupid. Any tax on the stupid is fine by me. Another one that should be more heavily taxed is energy drinks like monster/relentless and imitation red bull. All you see in the town centre is pikeys drinking that muck.
Rincewind Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 Its that stuff that knackered my laptop and Kindle

James. Posted 25 August 2013 Author Posted 25 August 2013 Does anyone even read these magazines? No idea what their readership number are but surely in terms of significant issues impacting women's rights this has to be pretty low down on the list of priorities. Feels like the sort of thing that will blow over when everyone realises no one really gives a shit. Its that stuff that knackered my laptop and Kindle What?! Naked women knackered your laptop? Crikey Ken, more to you than meets the eye.
Guest Bilo Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 If you want to see objectification of the opposite sex, observe a hen night when a male stripper is about. I'm not sure Nuts and Zoo should be within reach of children, but women AND men being sexually objectified is rife in the media and has been for years. A few half-arsed protests won't change what is a part of our culture, for better or for worse.
The People's Hero Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 Is normal red bull okay? I personally think its a waste of time but strangely the pikeys tend to go for the really cheap copy stuff, or relentless/monster it seems. Its all muck, if we're being honest.
Xen Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 Isn't feminism just another form of sexism? For the most part, yeah. It's supposed to be about fighting for equality between men and women, but far too many feminists are more interested in flipping it so it becomes women > men. While the movement isn't meant to be sexist itself, an awful lot of self-proclaimed 'feminists' are.

The People's Hero Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 Does anyone even read these magazines? I don't think their readership are the sort to pore over prose. Maybe enjoy the pictures, but they are not buying it for the words. No point banning them, let the pikeys have their bit of entertainment. It keeps them from fighting and drinking for a bit.

Zoo and Nuts are largely about tits and LAD culture, but FHM is a genuinely decent read with some well-written and intelligent articles. I presume they'll be protesting about Heat and other magazines aimed at women that are far more insidious in the manner in which they judge men and women by their appearance. Wow! Becks Gets a Back, Sack and Crack Wax! Hold the front page! The Guardian will be shitting themselves. Oooh, look at the disgusting famous women with their common and natural skin complaint of acne. Aren't they gross?!
HEGGSY Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 They're a bit shit aren't they, lads mags? You buy them for the pictures, of which the Internet is full of, and the buyers most certainly don't buy them for their in depth and well worded journalism
The People's Hero Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 FHM is not a good read! Sure it has a few articles in it, but they tend to be horrifically written with zero depth. Its a tiny step up from Nuts/Zoo.

Might as well just call it 'Make women look ugly so I feel better about myself!' magazine.

Its a tiny step up from Nuts/Zoo. Kind of what I was thinking. I can't remember the last time I bought a magazine, nevermind a lads mag. I buy The Economist to convince myself I'm clever from time to time but that's about it. Oh, and Time Out but that's free and genuinely useful. EDIT: there's free naked women all over the net, why pay £5 for the privilege.
Fox92 Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 I see just as much pictures of men being reposted/shared on social networking websites.
ADK Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 Women are sex objects to men. They always will be. I wish women who do these protests would realise this and stop making such a fuss. So long as women are not treated purely as sex objects then I don't see the problem?
Guest Bilo Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 FHM is not a good read! Sure it has a few articles in it, but they tend to be horrifically written with zero depth. Its a tiny step up from Nuts/Zoo. I think it's a big step up from Nuts and Zoo, it's readable without being massively thought provoking. It's not a magazine that's aimed at kick starting deep philosophical debate if we're honest. I don't buy it religiously or anything, much prefer Four Four Two these days, but the articles are usually light-hearted and enlightening.
Webbo Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 Tbh, I wouldn't want to be scanning the magazine racks and have pictures of naked blokes staring me in the face. These magazine do objectify women. They talk about them as if they are just a pair of tits gagging for sex (not true in my experience ). I'm no saint, I like looking at naked women as much as the next man but I can understand why women are offended.
Guest Bilo Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 Might as well just call it 'Make women look ugly so I feel better about myself!' magazine. Exactly. There is a real bitchiness to magazines like this, and I'd argue they are more damaging to the self-esteem of insecure young women and girls than a few risque photos of Page 3 girls. Women who ordinary men would go gooey eyed over are ritualistically torn to pieces in Heat and the like for the crime of having a bit of cellulite, wearing the same item three times or a couple of spots while walking to Tesco in December without any make-up on. The argument that they're showing what women really look like as opposed to the photoshopped and airbrushed images in lads' mags is rather undermined when you consider they show these images purely to point, laugh and bitch. They're vile little publications. If the feminist protesters really wanted to be taken seriously as campaigning against the objectification of women, they'd be outside Heat's office as well. As it is, they just look like a rabble of men-hating hypocrites.
The People's Hero Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 Kind of what I was thinking. I can't remember the last time I bought a magazine, nevermind a lads mag. I buy The Economist to convince myself I'm clever from time to time but that's about it. Oh, and Time Out but that's free and genuinely useful. I read BBC history magazine and the BBC focus science magazine, both of which are a decent ish read, though have gone downhill in recent times and have scandalous amounts of advertising (BBC? You what?) and precious little content, but were gift subscriptions. I do also on occasion read the Economist as well as the insurance post, insurance times and insurance age (you can imagine how thrilling these are). I signed up for 6 months of the Economist and probably have a good 4 month backlog. Ooops. I do occasionally get given FHM since my father in law replenishes the mags at his gym and brings us the old ones, almost every magazine at £4 a copy ish across the spectrum goes straight in the bin.
