Things Americans do that 'Brits' hate.

The World Series is actually called so because the first national baseball competition was sponsored by a newspaper called "The World"

It has nothing to do with geographical reasoning and the Yanks absolutely love pulling anyone up who mentions it.

And I love American sport and the way they love our accent, go to a bar and start up a conversation with an American girl and soon as she hears you you'll well away already without any effort at all.

I've heard that reasoning for the naming of the World Series a few times (Christopher Hitchens mentioned it, I think), but I've also heard that it was made up (maybe on QI).

Just did a little digging and found this:

I even know where Djibouti, Burundi and Bhutan are, but that is me, I'm a bit of a maps geek.

Me too :D

One of my hobbies growing up was actually lookign through an Atlas, I could do it for absolutely hours on end. Probably what got me into travelling.

Did you ever play a facebook game called "Geo Challenge"?  You had to do flags, capitals and famous landmarks as quick as possible, I actually got to number three in Leicester, spent days on it.

I'm not very good at Geography yet I am sure I came top in a couple of terms. Although it was the bottom form and I even came top in RI. My woodwork/metalwork and art was crap though.

Interesting, they actually did a feature on it on ESPN before a World Series match as well i watched so that's a myth that has seriously spiralled out of control.

That's false. Prayer is most certainly allowed in school and public buildings.

Students can, say, form their own prayer or Bible study groups on premises on their own time.

What's not allowed are endorsements of one faith by government employees or organizations. Examples of what could be considered unconstitutional are public school-mandated prayer times and judges displaying the Ten Commandments in their courtrooms.

So I'm sorta right then?

Given the thread title and the fact that this post doesn't appear to be linked to anything it really gave me a good chuckle :D

I hate it when Americans brag about their grades

I believe it was in relation to the geography part and others saying how bad Americams were at it.. But yes it was a little off  track.

Just pointing out that Canadians are also Americans, they live in America, so do people from Mexico and Argentina. So it is no different to compare Scots with Brits, as it is to compare Canadians with Americans.

I'm well aware of that. The OP said things they do that Brits hate so I added mine.

That's his point. Scots are Brits and Canadians are Americans. Scots are Europeans and so are Brits while Scots are also Brits but Brits aren't necessarily Scots.

Used to play it against my mate or one similar where you had to point as close to a country or city on a world map with no borders on it , it was annoying as I played with the track pad on my laptop so I was severely hampered, but otherwise it wouldn't have been a fair contest, I have an app on my phone I think it's just called geography challenge, a flag, a country, a landmark, then multiple choice answers, always have a quiz while I'm having a crap.

Canada is a part of the American Continent, the UK or any country in it is a part of Europe.

The 50 States are members of the United States, Scotland, Wales, N Ireland and England are members of the United Kingdom.

I like to do a mathematical problem while i'm taking a dump, especially if i'm a bit constipated.

Sometimes it helps to work the problem out with a pencil.

Very, very, very poorly made then as people are clearly comparing citizens of the united states to citizens of Canada, Canadians are North American, Americans are American and North American. Scots and Brits, same thing.

Anybody that is nitpicking about Canadians being "Americans" as in persons from the Americas when we're all clearly talking about "Americans" as in U.S. citizens is being a pedant, and frankly also being an irritant because you're not exactly right here.

In the English-speaking world, it's most commonly accepted that "American" refers to the United States of America and should be used as such. We have other words and terms to use to speak about persons, places, or things from or in the U.S. or Canada as parts of the continent or the Americas as a whole (most commonly "North American"). Canadians would understand themselves to be also "North Americans" but they would never call themselves "Americans."

If we were from "Latin America" and spoke Spanish, we'd use the terms differently.

I was being a pedant and I'll admit it, but it was originally in response to someone complaining about united statesians saying things like 'Scots aren't like you Brits', when it is clear from the context what is meant and is just as pedantic.

It is definitely something to bear in mind though in Latin America, even if speaking English you can and I have offended people by referring to Americans.

But it is correct, Canadians are Americans, you can't say they are North Americans, but not Americans.

No it isnt lol

Asking to be referred to as a United Statesian would be a lot more pedantic than a Scotsman wanting to be known as Scottish rather than British.

Have you made that up lol.

No they're not, America isn't even a place or a continent it doesn't exist lol if it does feel free to point it out on a map, you can't say putting North and South America together makes "America" lol two totally different continents.
