Things Americans do that 'Brits' hate.

In the mid 90s, I was walking along Princes Street in Edinburgh, which basically sits below a massive rock with a huge frigging castle upon it - Edinburgh Castle.

A very tall, very overweight dude wearing garish checked brown trousers and a peaked cap aproached me and asked in a "North American" accent:

"Excuse me, where's the Castle?"

I didn't say a word and just turned and pointed up, shrugged and walked off.

Now I concede that he MAY have been Canadian, but I'm willing to bet one of IamRodHull's testicles that he was a Sceptic Tank...

Stereotypes coming to life is one of my existence's little pleasures.

Have you made that up lol.

No they're not, America isn't even a place or a continent it doesn't exist lol if it does feel free to point it out on a map, you can't say putting North and South America together makes "America" lol two totally different continents.

It exists, apparently it's a nonce word.

If America doesn't exist how can you have a north, a south, a central, a united states of, a Latin America. I understand what you are saying and you're right, I was originally just trying to point out that getting all het up because they don't differentiate well between English, Scottish, British, especially when they aren't actually being inaccurate is a bit silly. Especially as we do the same. You can argue semantics, and knowing you you will until you're blue in the face, there is confusion, more so with Latin America, over the ambiguity of the term American. Some languages do differentiate, and in Esperanto they decided it needed this level clarity. In English they have discussed it and the term united statesian was the term they came up with, but it was never put into general use. Now of course in this country and other English speaking countries American has come to mean a citizen of the united states.

Anyway, said all I need to say on this.

Next we can discuss the difference between Holland and the Netherlands.

Produce crap crap crap comedy shows which idiot Brits actually lap up and repeat the catchphrases of over and over again.

That and pinching every decent idea British TV has, bastardising it and then tainting the name of a great British show in the US.

See Life on Mars and The Inbetweeners' American counterparts.

You call that a castle? No wonder he didn't recognize it!

The back of cinderellas castle is the only place you can smoke at Disney. It was littered with fag ends. Kind of ruined the image.

I got the feeling when I was in the US that the confederate flag was much maligned very much like the st george's flag is in England.  If you are seen with it wrapped around you or waving it about then it makes you some neanderthal, quite a shame really, I'm not necessarily a huge fan of overt patriotism but I always thought those who were waving the confederate flag were just proud of where they came from rather than celebrating some backward ideology.

When i was in the states in july, every american i spoke to thought i was an aussie.

Very annoying.

Same thing happened to me.

I put it down to the fact that my gf at the time looked a bit like a wombat

Yes,I've had that problem, but I've found this foolproof way of differentiating.

Australians start the answer to every question with the word "look"and then use it at least twice in every sentence.

We'd have to change the name of the thread if we did

In my experience, those who wave it tend to be knuckle dragging racists.

hehehe

I thought it was me with a sense of humour failure! Glad I'm not the only one to not find it even remotely funny.

I was playing safe. If I didn't put that some one was bound to say 'Wrong thread' and if started a new thread I'd be hung drawn and quartered by the Mod Police.
