Harry - LCFC Posted 28 October 2013 Posted 28 October 2013 every time someone spits small invisible droplets of saliva enters the air.. let alone as you rightly said what enters people's homes from the bottom of shoes... I suppose sneezing without a tissue should also incur a good fine as well then. I do take your point on the spreading of diseases but I get the feeling it's all a bit over protective and illberal. Most people's first thought was the sight of someone spitting as was mine which I felt wasn't offensive enough to justify that kind of punishment.

Harry - LCFC Posted 28 October 2013 Posted 28 October 2013 now you are just being silly... one is obviously intentional... The other you have little warning or foreknowledge of.. Not really, you should've brought a tissue with you, you've got control over that and sneezing is far worse I'd have thought so would require greater scrutiny. I can't imagine people are that concerned about falling ill from spitting tbh, nor can I imagine the risk is that severe anyway. If it is then I'd be willing to change my mind on this one, health risks should be addressed, it just seemed at the start of this discussion that the only problem with spitting was the sight of it which is why I opposed the fine.

You can take a tissue with you and spit in to it. Who says you have to spit where other people walk? I think you're clutching at straws to be honest with the sneezing point, especially.

I think you're clutching at straws to be honest with the sneezing point, especially. I was pointing out that most people wouldn't want a fine for those who sneeze without a tissue and therefore there shouldn't be a fine for spitting without a tissue. I wasn't seriously suggesting that we should punish those who walk out of the house unprepared for a coughing fit.
danny. Posted 28 October 2013 Posted 28 October 2013 Good, disgusting habit and always completely vile, chav-looking, waste-of-oxygen types that do it. Absolutely no need. That said, it is utterly unenforceable, so a completely pointless idea. Chav: *spits* Street warden: You have to pay £80 Chav: No. Street warden: You have to, it's law. Chav. Fuck off. ....

I wasn't seriously suggesting that we should punish those who walk out of the house unprepared for a coughing fit. Absolute rubbish. Sneezing is an unavoidable, competely involuntary action, just the same as coughing or being ill. Spitting is absolutely not, there is no justification for hacking up and gobbing a greenie in the street - it's not remotely an involuntary action. I really don't know why you're so bothered about a fine being issued for spitting in the street? Surely it shouldn't matter a jot how much the fine is - If people think £80 is severe, then here's a helpful hint; if you don't spit in the street, you won't get fined. Pretty simple really, isn't it?
Mr.X Posted 29 October 2013 Author Posted 29 October 2013 £60 tickets I dished out down hear a couple of times, and also for fag end dropping (litter), plus dog fouling. Probably gone up now though. Spitting is a vile habit. Where are you ?

You'd get issued with an on-the-spot fine, similar to a parking ticket, and they work in much the same way.

broughtonblue Posted 29 October 2013 Posted 29 October 2013 Good idea, totally agree As someone pointed out about the amount of germs in it, but will it be ok for footballers still to do it, then another player slides straight through it?

I don't know about you but even if I do keep tissues in my pocket, I do NOT always get the forewarning im about to sneeze... Also read up about the great white plague ( of TB) in the USA in the early 20th century and you can see the amount of deaths that all came about largely through spitting in the streats... and we are talking about thousands not a few..

Pretty simple really, isn't it? The reason I oppose it it because it's an excessive punishment in my view. I don't like spitting and would like to see much less of it but that does not mean I should use any means available to me to stamp it out. The amount doesn't matter? Of course it does! There comes a point when a punishment makes a the offender the victim rather than delivering justice. The same will apply to you, there will be a line somewhere where you think "hang on, that crime doesn't deserve that kind of fine." And that's the difference in opinion here, my line is lower than everyone else's.

I really do see your point about it being excessive- it IS a large fine... but should it be reduced would it REALLY act as a a deterrent? I also totally see the point that it is disproportionate in relation to other smaller fines for what seems like worse offenses.. maybe, however it is the other fines ( like speeding and drink driving) that are ' under punished ' having worked in a peadeatric intensive care unit I see the effects of the above mentioned and actually maybe a better punishment would be to get the offenders in to switch off the ventilators in front of the families instead of the nurses. I can assure you its a horrific experience.. but im digressing.... we could all be like saudi Arabia and cut off someones hand for graffiti or dropping litter! as an aside its one of the cleanest natiions around but of course im joking. .. but the point remains that sometimes the only way to enforce a rule, ordinance or law is for the punishment to seem excessive enough for it to be a deterrent

Personally I suspect a relatively small deterrent would be enough for this issue, the youths who I imagine do it most are probably keen to keep what they have. If we didn't see much change it could always be put up. Interesting to hear what lengths you have to go to fully remove a problem, clearly the means don't justify the ends in the case of Saudi Arabia. PS - Good discussion this, funny how smaller local issues like this can bring out such good debate
cambridgefox Posted 30 October 2013 Posted 30 October 2013 This whole debate has made me spit feathers . . . . That's £160 spitting and littering.
Rincewind Posted 31 October 2013 Posted 31 October 2013 A friend got caught throwing a fag end on. the floor. She said the annoying thing was where she stood was hamburger cartons and newspapers. She said he came from nowhere.
Zingari Posted 31 October 2013 Posted 31 October 2013 That's £160 spitting and littering. Well spotted , Not to mention cruelty to birds, add another 500 quid
Rincewind Posted 31 October 2013 Posted 31 October 2013 I was at a bus stop today and this old geezer with a walking stick walked 10 yards spat then sat back down on the seat. Dirty old bugger.

Swalker Posted 31 October 2013 Posted 31 October 2013 Good!! It's a needless and disgusting habit that seems to have inherited people for no apparent reason. When was it that it became socially acceptable to spit in the street?
