£80 fine for spitting in the street

I hope they bring fines like that down here, recently it appears to have become socially acceptable to let your dog empty its bowels and the owner is not required to pick it up around here

Don't agree at all. I find a lot of things unappealing but that doesn't mean these actions should incur fines of that amount. An overly authoritarian reaction to a very, very trivial matter indeed.

But if we're into the business on clamping down on liberties we find unpleasant I hope we get rid of those religious chaps in town,  they're much worse than spitters.

That would be a shit idea.

Yeah, why not let people start pissing in the streets as well? or vomiting? Or just let them chuck rubbish all over the place? All of these are equally as disgusting and have no place in a civilised society and I for one am glad that it's being clamped down on.

It's ****ing horrible and there's no need for it.

Not before time.

Disgusting behaviour performed by disgusting people.

Anything that cleans up the city centre is a good thing.

I happen to think £80 is a bit too much, but the principle is absolutely right. It's a disgusting thing to do with no consideration for those using the pavements. If you have to do it, do it in a tissue and then put it in the bin, spitting in the streets is just wrong.

theres a bloke who lives opposite me,who comes out his house and gobs about 3 times on his front, proper big greenies as well ,i hope this dirty bleeder gets nicked

Good, it's a filthy habit. It seems that to some people it's become socially acceptable to just gob onto the pavement, so anything that cracks down on that is fine with me.

Equally disgusting? As if by any stretch of the imagination one could consider spitting to be on the same level as urinating. Vomiting is actually more unpleasant IMO but largely out of your control so I'm certainly not going to impose a fine for something you can't really be blamed for. Littering is a different matter as it degrades an area over time which requires public spending to clean up so yes I would have a fine for that whereas as spitting only causes momentary offence.

Yes, it's the amount that's being suggested that I dislike. For an action that, IMO, has a pretty minimal and extremely short term impact it's a rather hefty fine. I'd want no more than £30 if we're going to have it.

I'd imagine that the majority of the time when someone has vomited in the street, it'll be because they've drank themselves into that state, which people certainly can be blamed for. It might be involuntary to bring it up but they've got themselves into that situation.

Well the fine has to be enough to deter people from doing it and while £30 is still a sizable sum, spitting is so completely unnecessary that I'd argue that it warrants a higher penalty. If £80 serves to stop people from doing it then in my eyes, it's fine.

The only thing against is that it's being enforced by street wardens. In other words if there is a gang of lads doing it it will  be ignored, if it's a little old man he'll get done.

Well that' snot fair.

Does seem a bit drastic to impose discipline for spitting. What happened to police officers who could strike up a bit of rapport with someone, and get them to change their behavior in a more cheerful way? Did they ever exist? Maybe we could try a tv campaign using all the latest psychological tricks to show people how spitting makes you look like a diagusting little sewer dwelling ratboy. Surely there is a better way than to go straight in with issuing fines and further alienating people from the police
