An Italian Perspective

Flew over with an Italian friend for the QPR match. His first ever English game and my first City game for (oh the shame) nearly 20 years. Friend very keen on English football and it was interesting to hear his comments on the differences between the game in Blighty and in Italy.

Firstly the organisation both within and without the ground at Loftus Road. Security much more efficient and polite, everything signposted and the police presence organised and not threatening. Bars inside the ground that sell beer! Stewards that seem to know what they are doing and their responsibilities.

Secondly, the support. Obviously this only applies to the Leicester fans as we never heard the QPR fans  . Riccardo just couldn't believe the numbers, the volume and the humour (cue squirrel episode). At Genoa there are more flags and flares obviously and certainly more Italian 'passion' but much less spontaneity.

Thirdly the football. He really appreciated the 100% commitment, the end-to-end style of play and the fact that when someone was tackled they normally got straight back up, rather than spend five minutes writhing on the ground and begging that their mother be allowed on the pitch to tend their injury. Whilst we rode our luck and certainly got away with it in the first half, we never backed off. He was particularly impressed with Vardy, Dyer, Drinkwater and Morgan. We both thought Vardy's goal was a true cracker. City have a new fan!

His love affair with English football was very nearly short-lived however as we travelled from west to east and went to see Millwall-Middlesborough. Dreadful match, dreadful weather, dreadful place. Rather like Mogadishu but without the glamour.

Personally, I can't tell you how good it was to see the City again, to hear the chants and savour a brilliant victory. Must do it again some time!

Happy Christmas to all Leicester fans, wherever you may be.

Yeah a great story. I can't think of any Italian players who have ever played for Leicester. Danny Titatto sounds italian but he was Australian.

Quality post!! I hope your Italian friend will look out for our results and spread the word :)

Really enjoyed reading.

Bout the chanting, I had an American friend watch a game last season, he loved the atmosphere and spoke about the vast amount if chants we had also

Good to hear what your friend had to say though. Watching Leicester play away when our fans are in god voice is an awesome experience even if you go to all the games. Championship is easily one of the best leagues in Europe.

You can have my +1 for today. Well it is christmas.

I'm just glad you didn't change your sig to Gary Glitter or something. The day would have gone from bad to worse.
