The People's Hero Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 Ok. Answer your slightly bastardised version of the same question then. If you can feed yourself and family for a tenner a week, surely you can also afford heat? Or have I misunderstood? Have you never ascertained both to be fact?
Rincewind Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 The reason that she was able to heat was that she drastically cut down on what she spent to eat. Simple. It is called ecomonising when you have to although I would not like to live on those recipes but sometimes there is no choice. If you read her blogs Jack explains it. You can also comment and even call her a liar.
Mike Oxlong Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 If you ate a diet of beans, eggs and pickled onions couldn't you afford to eat and heat?
Rincewind Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 If you ate a diet of beans, eggs and pickled onions couldn't you afford to eat and heat? depends where you bought them from. bargin bin at Tesco's yes. Foreman and Mason no. Assuming you were living on minmum wage and tax credits.
Buce Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 Besides, I believe it's spelt bóöcê Sorry, you'll have to give me the idiot's version..
ADK Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 People do get enough money on benefits to survive, the real question is whether it has a negative effect on their wellbeing if they are on that amount for a long time.
Rincewind Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 People do get enough money on benefits to survive, the real question is whether it has a negative effect on their wellbeing if they are on that amount for a long time. Exactly. If people had read Jack Monroes blogs they would have seen that she was struggling for a long time. She used to put extra coats on her two year old son at night. Then she got fed up of living like that and found a way of living cheaply and able to have a little heating. She started a blog which became a hit and now does an occasional column for a newspaper. But those that have read her blogs would know this.
The People's Hero Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 Sorry, you'll have to give me the idiot's version.. I'm not sure I can dumb it down much more. Perhaps you will fit in here after all.
Buce Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 I'm not sure I can dumb it down much more. Perhaps you will fit in here after all. Well, try. Pretend you're talking to your social worker..

Sob story after sob story and people actually buy it, if you could make a career out of telling that you would never have been out of work. That said, at least you have finally came around to the fact now you can feed a family on £10 a week and we could do with cutting something in welfare to reflect that.
The People's Hero Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 Well, try. Pretend you're talking to your social worker.. Nicely done. You'd have about a 60% chance of success with that on here but sadly I'm one of the mugs paying for everyone else. Very witty though. Almost droll. I think perhaps you were going for droll.

Soon be a black market in them mind, obviously.
Rincewind Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 Poundshop land on now. They are competing with each other now and selling things for 97p
Guest MattP Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 I've heard the food banks are competing with each other. Going around estates trying to rope people in with the promise of free steaks and rice pudding, just something I've heard. Not seen it in the mainstream media either so I expect it's true.
The People's Hero Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 That's too black and white, Matt. Things are not true or false, they are sort of grey. And that's why lazy people should be given more free money not to work. Haven't you been listening?

The People's Hero Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 How do you know he's communist? Do you actually know him? Sure, he may act, talk and live like a communist, he may openly proclaim to be a communist but if you've never interviewed him on a niche radio station, I don't see how you can say he's a communist. It's just idle speculation.

I understand your sarcasm here but by that very token you indicate that you believe the mainstream media tell us lies. The very media that you have used to support your political views... The Daily Mail for example...
Rincewind Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 I would like those who do not approve or believe that foodbanks exist to go and spend a day with Shelter or Action Homeless or Streetlink ora welfare worker or anyone on the frontline who actually know what is going on. That is a way to prove what is or not happening.

Jon the Hat Posted 7 February 2014 Posted 7 February 2014 Most people on benefits WORK. You know why that is dont you Ken? Because Labour introduced tax credits - the benefit for the working masses. A deliberate ploy to make people dependent on the state. The state takes your money, the state gives it back. The coalition on the other hand have increased the tax free threshold by circa 50%, and are about to increase the minimum wage by a chunk as well. They are trying to un do the mess Labour made of our Welfare system, and they are being fought at every turn by those with their own left wing agenda. **** em.
Captain... Posted 7 February 2014 Posted 7 February 2014 You know why that is dont you Ken? Because Labour introduced tax credits - the benefit for the working masses. They are trying to un do the mess Labour made of our Welfare system, and they are being fought at every turn by those with their own left wing agenda. **** em. Tax credits exist because the minimum wage isn't a living wage due to prices increasing at a much higher rate than inflation. Maybe tax credits aren't the best way of subsidising low wages but do you think raising the minimum wage will have the desired impact? Yes those in low paid work will be paid more, but it will be more expensive for employers to take people on. They will have a budget for wages, and increasing the minimum wage will most likely mean employing fewer people at the lower end, or putting up prices. If prices start going up then increasing the minimum wage will have 0 effect as the cost of living goes up. Ideally the shortfall would be made up by a reduction in wages by those at the top of the business, but I just can't see that happening.
