Whatever happened to inflatable banana's?

I was driving on a road in Beeston the other day when I noticed there was a giant inflatable banana in a retro/junk shop window! Does anybody remember when they were all the rage, I'm sure I remember it from an away cup game, possibly man city, in the late 80's or early 90's that started a brief trend for giant inflatable banana's on the terraces? Unfortunately the shop was shut as it was a Sunday else I'd probably have gone in and bought it!

I had a blue inflatable crayola crayon, about 6 feet long.

Would have been around 1990 or 1991.

No way would the h & s mob allow it now, could have had someone's eye out.

Jesus, how the years flew by! 20145 makes me more than 20000 years old, that old banana must be something of a relic by now. I don't see the link between a giant inflatable banana and racism though, but then this is the year 20145! :banana:

Health and safety kicked in and they were banned, those mofo's were slippery.

Yep, several people slipped on the inflatable banana skin.

True, we could always take them in deflated and blow them up inside the stadium.  It would be quite a sight, probably even better than lighting up the pitch with mobiles.

From Wiki;

"Manchester City supporters are distinguishable by their..... and are famous for their inflatables, normally yellow bananas which are still occasionally seen today at various games, often when City are on a cup run. The inflatables were initially started as a humorous laugh by numerous City fans after a City player Imre Varadi was nicknamed banana hence the inflatable bananas. Other inflatables soon followed aimed at putting goodwill back into football during the dark days of English football hooliganism and stadium riots and the craze soon caught on with other clubs following suit and even dressing up the inflatable bananas."

 Stoke had inflatable Pink Panthers at that time for some strange reason  maybe some bloke had a job lot so they went with them instead of bananas.

All sorts of stuff used to appear on the terraces at Filbo at the time from inflatable crocodiles to blow up dolls.

Was 1989, remember seeing the double decker and pen 1 full of em when man city came down, groundbreaking stuff at the time, just when the roses and the Mondays were about to become huge as well, them were the days.
