Mickyblueeyes Posted 13 January 2014 Posted 13 January 2014 Being a Leicester fan over the years has definitely had its ups and downs. I started supporting Leicester in the 1993/1994 season as young lad and remember watching my first game on telly (1-0 v Forest David Speedie) and remember going Filbert Street for that first time a few games later. I haven't looked back since. The first few years were filled with more highs then low. Prior to this season, I have missed that feeling we had under the O'neil era, it wasn't the cup wins or the consistent top ten finishes but that respect from other teams. Other club fans use to look at us and say "Leicester... they're pretty decent". I work and live outside the City and get to about 15 home games a season. When I trek back to the City I work after a Leicester win no ones too concerned when I rave about Dyers pace, Knockaerts flicks or Vardy's work rate. Its all Negredo this, Ozil that, Leicester?? They're shit they're in the championship blah blah. This Monday however was different, people stood up and took notice of us. I wasn't at the game on Friday as I couldn't get back in time but watched the match on the Sky. I haven't enjoyed a 45 minute half of football like that for sometime. The guys I was watching it with, both premier league club supporting fans kept commenting on how slick our football was. At the time, I thought they were being polite. Today at work however, that obviously was not the case. Every single non Leicester fan who watched that game that I've met admitted how impressive it was. One guy even said he had no intention to watch the match but couldn't turn it off once it started. I had comments like how olds that Vardy lad he should be in prem before long, Drinkwater, where did you get him from, That centre half you've got is far too good for that division. It was there again, that respect that pride that "Leicester they're pretty decent". I've watched highlights of the Match on Sky/BBC and have just watched it for the umpteenth time. Surely...Surely this is our year....we played some great stuff last year. Nothing as good as we are playing at the moment. Is this our defining match as "The Streak" was all those years ago. For the first time in ten odd years believe me boys and girls we have that respect back and it feels damn good!
Guest seanfox778 Posted 14 January 2014 Posted 14 January 2014 I thoroughly enjoyed reading that. Great post.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 14 January 2014 Posted 14 January 2014 Nice post. We're playing well of that there's no doubt. But its only a 4 point lead. Lose a game-which we will between now and May and its all back open again. Was it another team with our lead and style of play and decent form I'd be happy to say, 'they're going up.' But I just can't do it with Leicester. We have royally fcuked things on so many times in my lifetime its impossible to not think it'll happen again.
A fox for life Posted 14 January 2014 Posted 14 January 2014 As all Leicester fans on here, I too just can't convince myself that we can do it. HOWEVER that's NOT going to stop me thoroughly enjoying every game at the moment. also it does feel different this year, if you take the games we lost, more often than not we we're the better side. Also great post, I started supporting around the same time as you.
Hungry Hungry Fox Posted 14 January 2014 Posted 14 January 2014 Theres no doubt that we will lose again this season, however I am very confident that we could(and we have already) bounce back immediately

One of my best mates is a Southampton fan and he made an interesting point about being back in The Premiership... He said, all of a sudden, everyone's got an opinion on your team again. When you're in The Championship or League One you're right, no-one takes an interest in your team. This is part of the reason why I try and avoid the football chat in my office which revolves mainly around Arsenal and Manchester United fans who live out supporting their team through Sky Sports. It's the kind of talk that often leads on to FIFA Ultimate Team and them trying to compile a team full of United or Arsenal players on there and 'trash talking' players who play for other teams. This week though, the talk has been of our performance on Friday night which has been nice. It's almost as if there's been an acknowledgement that Leicester are now a team good enough to bother noticing or good enough to be accepted alongside the elite. I'm not sure how I'll feel if we get promoted again and the talk is always involving Leicester though. For instance, I've seen some people theorising that sacking Mackay might not actually be a bad thing for Cardiff considering his style of play etc. Try telling that to those Cardiff fans that have followed them week in, week out and watched the dross and disappointment with the only hope coming when Mackay came in and took them up. To the ones who had somewhat fallen out of love with Cardiff City before Mackay. If we go up and go through a bit of a sticky patch there will be John in Norfolk on Twitter with the opinion that Leicester should sack Pearson, there will be Mark Lawrenson questioning if Pearson is the right man to keep Leicester up on Match of the Day and 7,000 extra people at the King Power booing after a narrow defeat to Tottenham to ramp up the pressure. Whilst I'd like to go up, that is the aim after all, a little part of me is happy to keep Leicester for me and the others who have stuck loyal through the garbage of much of the last 10 years. Friday night was reward for us and could be our last little piece of our Leicester City.

cityfanlee23 Posted 14 January 2014 Posted 14 January 2014 Absolutely fantastic post, As fans we have opinions on the way we think x and y should be done.. who we need, who we dont.. etc etc... But times like this, Reading posts like this, and seeing all the fans grouping together and creating a "Family" in this special time, Is really really fantastic to see... Gives you a warm feeling doesnt it when you can be proud of who you support and proud of the fanbase we have and the individuals that make it up! Cannot wait to see what the future holds! Feeling fantastic after reading this. Thouroughly optimistic! CAN WE DREAM? I think we can! Thankyou for this post. Makes the day a bit easier! Here's to a prosperous new year to us all!

cityfanlee23 Posted 14 January 2014 Posted 14 January 2014 Totally the right attitude to have, there is a danger of getting carried away but we should just enjoy it and savour it for now. Yes! It's easy to get over confident and maybe I can be one accused of that when with friends etc.. But as discussed recently on another thread, although we should not use past seasons as a benchmark as to how many points we will need etc etc, There comes a point where you think "If we keep playing like this it will be bloody hard to bugger it up!!" And I am in that mode... I would think 12 wins from the next 21 would see us promoted, which is a hard feat.. but the way we are playing now.. can we be optimistic? I'd like to think so, This is however.. Leicester bloody city!
davieG Posted 14 January 2014 Posted 14 January 2014 Whether get promoted or not I'm just enjoying the ride after the last decade of dross it's just so nice to watch a team where all 11 players are comfortable on the ball and where we actually go out with the intention scoring more goals than the opposition and playing attacking passing football, this is what football should be about. It reminds me of the football we played in the 60's and I'm loving it. Even games that end up 0-0 or where we don't score and we haven't seen many can get you off your seat legally and be exciting. Enjoy it while you can because if we do get promoted it will be very hard to maintain this style and success, not impossible but........

Agreed, I reckon away matches won't be that pretty but I hope we play with freedom and expression in our home games and continue this attacking style. Only the Leeds match this season at home has been dull, even the Forest match we created several opportunities. All other games we've scored and looked like scoring plenty.
Dan Posted 14 January 2014 Posted 14 January 2014 I really do feel for anyone who missed Friday. I genuinely am struggling to think of a better performance from a Leicester side (I am only 20). Total ruthless attacking all game with some football that wouldn't have looked out of place amongst the very best sides. Absolute joy to watch.

Put your mortgage down that Leeds after losing 6-0, will turn city over. Support the Tigers as well, and you can enjoy citys slip ups.
Weller in Tights Posted 14 January 2014 Posted 14 January 2014 Had this text from a Florist fan at my work after he watched the game on sky ... ...Very impressed with City, they look the strongest team/squad in the league now to me. Playing with loads of confidence and self belief, I fully expect them to go up automatically.... There is also a Swansea and a Newcastle fan at my work and they are impressed with the football that City are playing. The neutrals certainly appear to think we are playing good football and heading for promotion. It can be hard for us to see it, as football fans can often be pessimistic about their own teams prospects. I for one, keep looking at the gap between us and 6th place, hoping we can make the play-offs, maybe its time to start believing.

Another season of relevised games at overinflated prices. We stay up again, then what? Very few promoted teams break into Europe/the top 6. You're better off going for the cup. Of course I want us to be promoted. Of course I want to see us play arsenal, liverpool and man Utd away. But then what?

If it's not possible to challenge for Europe after a while it does seem a bit... well, meh is the best word I can think of. Stay up a few more years, go for the cups and continue the cycle we've been on throughout our history. Perhaps end up getting relegated, have some fun in the championship, enjoy lower prices and different away days, have the excitement of a promotion challenge. I mean, how exciting have both this season and last been. So much better when you're winning matches. Who would you rather have been since the inception of the premier league, us or Aston Villa? Villa have been there since the start and have flirted with challenging for Europe every now and again. Meanwhile we have won two trophies, been to Wembley 7 times, had the ultimate highs and the ultimate lows (league 1). As they say, experiencing the lows makes the highs even better to enjoy. I'm not saying I wouldn't want to stay in the Premier League. I'd certainly hope we could challenge and then push for Europe IF we got there, and that is still a big IF with lots of games still to play. However, I do hope we don't endure the current rut we have been in again. 10 years without top flight football is just too long!
Russell sprout Posted 14 January 2014 Posted 14 January 2014 My area manager came in today and he's a villa fan,was chatting about them losing last night, He then diverted the conversation to our game on Friday night, saying he was chatting to a fellow villa fan last night about what I pleasure it was to see the game last Friday, how impressed they were with city, and how good a all round team performance it was! Made my day,got to say that when a neutral bigs your team up it's very flattering, told him were on box on Saturday and he's looking forward to it!

Stadt Posted 14 January 2014 Posted 14 January 2014 I almost enjoy the championship, it might seem a strange thing to say especially as I'm someone that has never seen us play in the premier league but in the championship we're a big fish in a small pond where we are regarded as one of the biggest clubs outside of the top flight. People always expect us to be up there, we as the fans expect us to be up there in the top 6 (well first at the minute ) and we have the enjoyment of seeing us win pretty much every home game. Don't get me wrong I want to get promoted as much as anybody but if or rather when we reach the premier league, survival will be the aim initially but after that will we just be a mid table side making the numbers up, where finishing in 15th place or whatever is considered as a genuine achievement? In the prem we obviously won't win near enough every home game but instead be enjoying draws against Chelsea or Man City at home as if they were wins, maybe we'd aim for the glamourless cups which nobody takes seriously anymore because the premier is the be all and end all for clubs which is fuelled by money and greed. It's likely if we were to go up that we'd bring a lot of unknown foreigners that wouldn't give a toss about being here and just see our club as a means to an end? I like our current squad with the cohesion and ability that is quite clear to see currently but I'd hate to see that dismantled but with NigeyP I feel that wouldn't happen and I think it's imperative for him to stay even if we were in the relegation zone and struggling and avoid being like Cardiff and ditching the manager when the going got a bit tough because survival is now seen like winning a cup. Anyway, the prospect of being a solid mid table side for years doesn't seem all that appealing to me.
LCCFox96 Posted 14 January 2014 Posted 14 January 2014 I love and hate the championship. It seems almost impossible to get out of and yet so easy to slide back into. Everything is in place this year to climb up into the premiership though and, if we make it, hopefully we can raise a few eyebrows with some good performances, stay up for as long as possible and enjoy the ride it gives us. Those two posts are a great read and fair, reflective accounts. If I could add one thing it would be as a much younger fan than the stated posters all I have ever really known is being told how crap leicester are, how the players we have are good in the championship and the "leicester city are so shitty" Christmas song (such a classic, witty I song I know). You occasionally get the mind you, you did have that bloke off match of the day once upon a time. But now people have watched the games, as mentioned above, for the first time ever (for me) people actually notice us and observe some of the neat football we play and compliment us. It's not just us as other championship teams deserve similar plaudits but we are one of the stand out lights outside the top flight now and we need to make it count. I finish on a comment a tottenham fan (a very bigoted and pro-premiership one if I may too) said to me after the QPR away game - "a premier league game in the championship. Such quality all over the pitch". I can't help but agree with him.
cjslcfc Posted 14 January 2014 Posted 14 January 2014 But as Bradford proved last seasom, you have to be nowhere near yhe PL to challenge for Europe. I just find promotion a bit pointless in all honesty. It only may seem pointless because of the vast gulf between the top 5 or 6 and the rest of the league. The top 4 are rarely troubled! Which is why I find the "demise" of the FA cup and League Cup very strange, considering the apparent lack of competition at the top of the PL you would think mid table teams would go for it more!!
