fuchsntf Posted 19 January 2014 Posted 19 January 2014 There are alot of overpriced restaurants everywhere, from john o'groats to Lands-end. Saying that there are also alot of good to excellent well priced restaurants all over the Uk. I havent been home for 3 years, but last visit, Leicester had improved tremendously, and the country pubs and restaurants had good bargains. The 2 for one days, the carveries, and pub food quality and service were excellent. Obviously its all down to personal experience on the day. I use to like the Grey lady, but People told me it got just a bit expensive. Then I usually first go for an indian, again whats around now, no idea.Any tips for my Next visit..????.

Soar Fox Posted 19 January 2014 Posted 19 January 2014 Blue Peter on Law Street or the Martin inn off Catherine Street. Both very good IMHO! Have you tried Rifle Butts on Nottingham Street, very good food.
Kinowe Soorie Posted 19 January 2014 Posted 19 January 2014 Have you tried Rifle Butts on Nottingham Street, very good food. Funny you should ask that... went last night and it wasn't very good. But have been once before and it was really good? There's a good veggie place down Gypsy Lane, Tangoed or Tangled?

I've not tried that place I might give it a try as I do like vegetarian food.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 19 January 2014 Posted 19 January 2014 I like the Hunting Lodge in Barrow. La Torre in Coalville is seriously good too. I dont particularly like curry but Chilli n Spice in Swannington used to fly their curries out to westlife in a helicopter
separator Posted 19 January 2014 Posted 19 January 2014 Badgers Sett pub in Cropston does decent pub grub
Unabomber Posted 19 January 2014 Posted 19 January 2014 Best Indian I've been to is the cinnamon tree, it's a bit out of the way from Leicester though.
kingcarr21 Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 The Case Casa Romana Slate (mountsorrel) 1573 The Bulls Head (woodhouse eaves) The Windmill inn Little India Red Cow Barceloneta Mangal. They are favourite restaurants in and around Leicestershire. Slate is a winner love the green thai curry from there would highly recommend One of my favourite places is the grey lady in newtown linford. Can be very expensive but if you go at lunchtime it 2 courses for bout £13. For the quality of food its a bargain
Kinowe Soorie Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Ashfields in Earl Shilton is good. But the best food I've enjoyed in Leicestershire is at Chef Patron in Thurlaston. Early doors though, as It was cheaper!

Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Ken you're a lovely bloke, but I don't understand this - you seem to have started a thread to lure in anyone who's willing to spend more than £10 on a meal out and then made fun of them by saying they're daft for spending £20 on a lettuce leaf and slice of beef (that's almost a poem.) Generally speaking, you get what you pay for - if you go to one of those 2 for £10 places, you're going to get something that will fill you up, but won't taste anything special. The best meal I've ever had, hands down, was at The Quorn Exchange a couple of years ago, which was £40 a head. I wouldn't go often as I don't earn a great deal but it was no coincidence that I paid more, sat in nice surroundings and ate a meal of far higher quality than Harvester Steve Walsh - The Case, excellent shout. Had pigeon there last year, was phenomenal. Value for money, I'd have to say Moomba in Loughborough is cracking. Must have been a dozen times and never been let down, always something different to try too
Finnegan Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Disappointed not to see Maryland chicken in there tbh. Put some cheese on it.
kingcarr21 Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Slate was a bit of advertising from me, it's my girlfriends mum & dads restaurant. HAHA im good friends with the owners as there youngest daughter goes to school with my daughter so it was a bit of advertisement from me aswel
Rincewind Posted 20 January 2014 Author Posted 20 January 2014 Julian you misunderstand, I was not mocking others. I was saying I cannot afford to pay £40 for a meal. I do not have a partner so do not need the nice surroundings etc. I save those occasions for something special. Went out yester to the Slug. The meal was OK but the place did my head in. Rugby and football on TV and music in the background. Someone asked for the rugby sound to be turned up. They also turned the music up. I would have gladly pait a couple of quid extra for silence. I don't eat as much as I used to though so smaller portions would be OK if I could afford it. I was brought up with big meals and home cooking which tasted great. That is what I look for. If you can afford it by all means go to a fancy restaurant with great service and surroundings. Like I said earlier my sister's birthday do dinner was pretty good. They were not big portions but cooked well. My mum was not keen on hers though. There were seven of us and cost £30 per person including drinks and tip. Enjoyable evening.
Thracian Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Doesn't surprise me to see the Surrey Keys cafe mentioned....it's a throw back to the time when exceptional food value was to be found all over the docklands area if you knew where to look. My youngest son trained under the guidance of the Chef Patron proprietor Kevin Doughty and the food there is excellent with the best Sunday lunches I've ever tasted.http://www.chefpatron.co.uk/ The Bell at Monks Kirby - just off the Fosse Way - takes some beating as well and there are decent places to eat in Woodhouse Eaves. Nationally it's all about levels and what you deem to be "good value" but I do feel some pride in the fact that and when the staff at the once world number one restaurant, The Fat Duck in Bray, won yet another award, they had their celebratory meal at Stoke Park where my City supporter son is a middle-order chef. It's certainly a nice setting and the taster menu is much recommended for its value!https://www.stokepark.com/members-area/10-course-taster-menu-in-humphrys.html https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Stoke+Park+buckinghamshire&espv=210&es_sm=93&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=pQzdUrLQG4PPhAe4jYG4AQ&ved=0CH0QsAQ&biw=1040&bih=732
lavrentis Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Went Curryosity on Narborough Road the other week and thought it was meh

Guest MattP Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Baffling thread, what possesses someone to go out of their way to make sure everyone knows how poor they are? Anyway you can have a go me Ken as I'm one of those bastards who pays extra for quality. I've paid 3 figures for a steak and I'd be worried about what I was eating if they could afford to give away it away for some of the prices mentioned. Some great shouts from SteveWalsh on Leicester restaurants. Royal Oak in Kirby does the best Sunday roast I've had, every Indian I know raves about The Cloud, from places I've been in town only Casa is worth eating at, 1573 has gone downhill.

Higher cost doesn't always mean better quality. I've had average costing meals that were much better than some expensive ones. And bloody hell, was it a good steak? How did you have it?

And bloody hell, was it a good steak? How did you have it? Not always of course but generally if it's more expensive the standard will be better. It was, venetian steakhouse in Las Vegas, impossible to finish though, must have been 30oz. Blue, I always have it blue or rare, anything above it ruins it for me!
The Year Of The Fox Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Best Indian I've been to is the cinnamon tree, it's a bit out of the way from Leicester though.yeh its decent enough
Rincewind Posted 20 January 2014 Author Posted 20 January 2014 It isn't a case of showing 'how poor one is' it is not spending more than one needs to. Some go on about people on benefits wasting money on booze and fags and i would view paying a vast amount out on a meal the same. If you do not earn mega bucks for whatever reason you tend to watch the pennies. If you can afford to spend £100 plus on a steak that costs a fraction of that to buy prepare and serve then fair do's and I'll grant you bragging rights but do not knock people that do not. Even the most exclusive restaurants can fail to cook your steak to your liking.
Guest MattP Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Examples? I've been to a lot of the top restaurants in the country and I can't ever remember them getting my steak wrongly done in the "exclusive" ones. I don't earn a wage that justifies a 150 quid steak but why not treat yourself once in a while?
JonnyBoy Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Ashfields in Earl Shilton is good. But the best food I've enjoyed in Leicestershire is at Chef Patron in Thurlaston. Early doors though, as It was cheaper! I live 100 yards from there but haven't been in years. Just doesn't seem that busy, a lot of people sayings it's getting better though
