If he chooses to play county cricket will be at Grace Road this summer

If there ever was an admission of incompetence it is letting your best player go becuase you can work out how to manage him.  Really.  Can you Imagine the FA dropping Rooney becuase he was a twat?  No.

Isn't Giles one of his biggest allies?

Ah, didn't realise they were so close at one point. Seems strange if that Giles liked him so much they would get rid of KP from the set up before a coach is appointed. Swann has come out and said there is no rift since the Textgate of 2012 and Pietersen's reintegration.

I expected some of the old guard to be axed and I agree they should be but I'm surprised KP is one of them, a match winner, a seat filler, an odd decision.

I know a few cricket journos including some who have been 'close' to Pietersen in the past.

I've been told he is a massive pain in the arse on more than one occasion.

I think for the ECB there were two choices.... Build another team around the ego that is KP or get rid and start again.

Pietersen will never accept just being the part of a team, he has to be the big man, they tried making him captain.... that didn't work... they tried playing along and he has let them down on more than one occasion.

Whilst from the outside I can see it looks nonsensical to fire what is your most talented player I can also understand the reason why they have done it. It's a real shame that Pietersen has not mellowed with age.

Fantastic opinion piece in yesterday's The Times explored the issues of nationality and adopted nationality in sport, covering lots of examples, before concluding that KP should never have played for England in the first place.

They quoted from the Australian batsman Ed Cowan about a conversation he had with KP.

I found it elsewhere online:

[Ed Cowan's] book has already found some publicity with the report of a quote by Kevin Pietersen during that match at Hobart.

Eyeing the lunch desserts Pietersen asked, with expletive inserted, what one of them was.

Cowan told him that, as it was the very English bread and butter pudding, he should really know.

“I’m not f****** English, Eddie,†replied Pietersen. “I am South African, I just work here.â€

K P is now reportedly a free agent, he does not have a contract at Surrey ccc, I cannot imagine him wanting to play 4 day county cricket anymore. I imagine he will become a mercenary, signing for Surrey on a 1 day contract, so he can base himself at the Oval, practice and play occasionally there, and then travel the world to play 20 over cricket, IPL and the Big Bash etc.

He's had issues at every club he's been at.

Thinks he'd bigger and better than the rest.

If that was a man u player in fergie reign he'd have gone ages ago...ie keane becks stam etc...

You can't go out and buy a quality replacement for the national team.

Shocking treatment from the ECB and from his former teammates.

Funny how that team meeting was meant to be confidential, yet Prior and Cook seem to have gone running to Flower and aired what KP said.

Ridiculous, and there was some of us mocking the state of Australian Cricket last Summer.

Unsurprising really, his attitude in the dressing room has been reported as being completely toxic, in particular his relationship with Alastair Cook and referring to his teammates as 'doos'.

Time to get rid and move on, hopefully the dressing room will be a happier place.

Plenty of young talent coming through, and none of them South African!

It get's stranger and stranger.  James Whitaker's interview on sky(oooh sky shock horror) avoided any questions about KP (oooh shock horror).  And he's apparanly not talking to the newspapaers...thanks for that Jame's, corporate nonsense yet again by those in charge.

Sacking the player who actually gets fans buying tickets, who can win games on his own and then the ECB and England management have the audacity to get rid of him not because of a lack of talent but beacuse

personal agendas.

I can't help but think the rest of the world aren't just laughing at Englands on field antics but their off field ones too.

I have known James Whitaker for over 30 years, give the guy a chance. He was always a team player and a man of integrity and a leader on and off the field. The whole K P thing could of been dealt with better but that decision would of involved maybe a dozen or more people (inc James Whitaker) the big wigs at the ECB would of instructed him on what he can or cannot say when interviewed. When you are an employee you follow the instructions of your employers.

Personally, can't say I've ever bought an England ticket to see Pietersen. It's always been about the team for me and that's something that has been lacking since the India tour, which coincidentally is also the last time KP actually helped us win a test match.
