Arriba Los Zorros Posted 15 February 2014 Posted 15 February 2014 Something that is a worry following the Watford game and will become an issue especially in home games. We can't expect to win them all like we have done until now if we don't siplay more nouse. But how can NP and the team get a side which thrives on the counter attack, to break down sides that defend deep and in numbers? Thoughts?
davieG Posted 15 February 2014 Posted 15 February 2014 It's not that we're not creating chances against Watford we had 18 attempts on goal but only 3 were on target as well as 10 corners so better more composed finishing would go a long way to turning potential draws and losses into wins.
pazzerfox Posted 15 February 2014 Posted 15 February 2014 The first rule of thumb is try not to concede sloppy goals on the counter attack. I think it's about varying the angles of attack and probing areas all over the attacking third, with a variation of long and short passes. It also helps if we can get an early goal in games, this gives the opposition little choice than to try to get an equaliser, giving us more space in behind. We have players that can beat a man in the shape of Vardy, Anthony and Lloyd which can also help to create that vial space. Having Kevin Phillips as well helps because you know in those goal mouth incidences, he is going to be there.
Mark 'expert' Lawrenson Posted 15 February 2014 Posted 15 February 2014 Just win all the away games. Seriously though we struggled last season against 'lesser' opposition who came and parked the bus, but this season we are a better side who will create enough chances to win games. Up to the strikers to put the chances away!

foxes_rule1978 Posted 15 February 2014 Posted 15 February 2014 Get Drinkwater to shoot from distance Certainly we should be trying from just outside the box more often rather than trying to pass it through impossible gaps or just pushing the ball out wide
Mark 'expert' Lawrenson Posted 15 February 2014 Posted 15 February 2014 Dyer-Vardy-Knockaert King-Drinkwater-James Koncesky-Morgan-Moore-De laet Schmeichel You missed out Nugent...............
foxes_rule1978 Posted 15 February 2014 Posted 15 February 2014 You missed out Nugent............... You can only have 11 in a side so I think that is why he did

Beat me to it, almost word for word.

BenKimberlin Posted 15 February 2014 Posted 15 February 2014 You missed out Nugent............... we dont NEED Nugent in the side, although i highly rate him, in my opinion this side would be good on the counter as it offers three different creative ways to break down teams who defend in numbers.
Mark 'expert' Lawrenson Posted 15 February 2014 Posted 15 February 2014 You can only have 11 in a side so I think that is why he did Oh my god, really? Thanks for letting me know. Seriously why would you post that reply? Why not post something meaningful? What I was getting at is why he left out Nugent? And put King in?

We have won 9 out of 9 before the Watford draw, with Nugent in the team, and are creating plenty of chances, if we do start struggling at home then yes by all means make the odd change, but the need for that is a few games away yet, if at all.
MooseBreath Posted 15 February 2014 Posted 15 February 2014 Dyer-Vardy-Knockaert King-Drinkwater-James Koncesky-Morgan-Moore-De laet Schmeichel 433? By far our least effective attackimg formation as proved every time we've played it. Not for me.The way to beat defenaive teams is by scoring twice like we did against Watford while not conceding more than once ie it's about keeping your concentration at the back while maintaining faith that you have the ability to break through eventually.
Fox92 Posted 15 February 2014 Posted 15 February 2014 Watford weren't the first to park the bus. What about earlier on in the season, the likes of Millwall etc? Our counter attacking play is fast and decent at times, we need to score more goals from set pieces especially corners.

Set piece goals or lack of has been a problem for a few seasons now, I guess we are not the tallest of sides but a few more from our centre backs would be useful.

What I was getting at is why he left out Nugent? And put King in? Maybe that's because King is a more clinical finisher than Nugent. That line-up might look thin on strikers but if our midfielders could be persuaded to shoot more from outside the box we could well get more goals from that source - last Saturday showed that they were more than capable from that distance.

It's not as if we are not creating chances with our current formation, I just cannot see the logic in playing an extra midfielder to break teams down. That's football I guess, divided opinions.
ozvaldo Posted 15 February 2014 Posted 15 February 2014 Play Knockaert in the middle behind one striker and tell him to shoot from distance non-stop. One striker of Jamie Vardy sprinting in on any rebounds. 3 midfielders of Drinky James and King passing it, retaining possession. Two wide men of Mahrez and Dyer roaming around but very attack minded. Three at the back of Wes, Moore and Konch/Was/RDL. Kasper in goal. Keep it on the deck. Quick passing football. Stretch them, tire them out. Never play hoof ball.

Guest MarshallForEngland Posted 15 February 2014 Posted 15 February 2014 If we'd have had another 5 minutes at Watford we'd have probably won the game. I think the frenzied urgency when we are losing needs to begin a few minutes earlier, not on the 89th or 90th minute. Mahrez and Phillips could have been brought on a few minutes earlier too, and at the same time. I know that going for it to such an extent is a risky strategy, and I don't think we should go 2 at the back for too long at the end of a match we are losing, but that sense of urgency and kitchen-sink approach starts just a bit too late.
