We've bolstered the squad numbers and added vital PREMIER LEAGUE experience to a young and inexperienced Premier League squad. It's a transition. We will see some more transfers, sure but we're taking advantage of the Bosman rule. All credit to Pearson! I say bring in Joe Cole too - he's just been officially released from West Ham today. However, I feel his wage demands may put him out of our league. He has nothing to bargain with untill clubs start making offers. He may want 60k a week but if no one offers him that he could be stuck on 25k.

Last couple of years we could be excused for endlessly trying to balance experience with youth but now we are premier league can't we just build a young, exciting and talented squad?Is the window closed already or have we just improved our squad nice & early with a couple of free's ahead of others? My god

In case you missed it, we already have a young, exciting and talented squad. Which will be refined with experience, depth, wisdom and flair.

I think he's on high wages at West Ham. They're big spenders! Their wage spend is in the top 10 of the Prem. I bet he would be on £60-80k at the moment. Whether we could get him down, I'm unsure. I think he will add vital experience to that young midfield!
sylofox Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Thinking NP is picking up what he see's as great freebies first. I do expect 2 or 3 at about 4mill to come in if not a little more. We was lucky last year having few injuries and suspensions we won't be so lucky next season.

Experienced pros designed to nurture younger players followed by less well known players brought in at low cost and low risk. I would hope we'd sign one more CB, and perhaps one with a tad more pace, a full back (I'd guess one who could play either flank) followed by another midfield and a centre forward. These I assume will come under the heading of 'unknown'.

So untill someone makes an offer 2k a week would be worth a punt.

There may be one or two big(ger) boys to come in but they're certainly not going to be confirmed in May. For now, we've got a couple of promising young Englishmen and an experienced ex-England CB who was his teams player of the season. In Nige we trust. Not being sarcastic with this one, highly rate this guy. Free as well, Aston Villa are mad. I'm not all doom and gloom. Please no more 35 year olds though, might pop a blood vessel
Fez of Mahrez Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Ok, I'll play... Stirring and trolling aside, there's still a debate to be had about what our transfer strategy is. You can't pick and choose which players to bring in at whatever time. We might make our most important signing on August 31st. Having said that, we appear to have padded out the squad with players who will have no problem fitting into what we have already. Players who wanted their future sorted ASAP and we showed the commitment and trust to get them early. Albrighton strikes me as a similar signing to the likes of Drinkwater, Marshall, De Laet and James. Maybe a bit older at the time of signing but a player with a lot of potential. To get him for free is a bonus. I imagine we'd have been happy to pay around £3million for him if he'd been available and in contract. In theory, he should be at his peak over the next two or three years. Like Albrighton, Upson won't have to settle in the country or take time to get used to the Premier League. That takes risk out of a signing. I think once we've padded out the squad a bit with low-risk signings, we'll probably take a gamble or two. Either a high-cost Championship striker or a cheaper foreign one. But we've got months to sort this out. Early business means we can deal in quality rather than quantity from now on.

Anyway, makes sense to get the deals of Albrighton, Upson and Hamer done early on. Being on a Bosman, they would of been cherry picked by other clubs make no mistake about that. Fez of Mahrez is right to say that we can now deal with looking to add quality to the squad and maybe one or two more risque signings - long, long way to go as far as transfers are done here. Don't forget, there will be players going out the door too.

Kasper Hamer Conrad (not sure on premier loan ruĺes so lets assume he gets in) Deleat Wasyl Wes Konch Upson James DD Knocky King Hammond Mahrez Albrighton Nugent Vardy Wood Gtf Thats about 19 of the top of my head. Allowing for moore and jeff not having to count. So we may only bring in 3 or 4 more. But for debates sake say we pick up another couple of frees now the lists are out. Then do a bit of shopping in harrods not tesco. Yet on August 28th x comes up for sale you want him but know it will be at the expense of waysl lets say. I know pearson will make those decisions but it must be a hard act to balance. Hollowhead got it wrong big time at palace. What pulis did was a minor miracle with a 29 game season and a squad in a mess.
Guest Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Schmeical, Humer, Logan, Morgan, Upson, Wasilewski, Moore, De Laet, Konchesky, Schlupp, Drinkwater, James, King, Hammond, Albrighton, Knockaert, Mahrez, GTF, Wood, Nugent, Vardy Only 21 players there even after the signings and not including Lloydy if he shocks everybody and stays (don't expect he will hence not on list). We get a squad of 25 in the Prem. Moore might not even count for that off the top of my head so we could potentially have 20 realistic squad members atm. Still space for more later in the window but NP's done well to begin fleshing things out with Prem experience in Upton and Albrighton and a decent back up keeper. I wouldn't be surprised to see us pick up a full back for relatively little or no money and then save our spending for a midfielder and striker. Trust NP, he deserves that. EDIT: hadn't read the last post - great minds....!

I know that it would be exciting for everyone to see a "marquee" signing or two come in this summer but I'm not sure that it will happen. I hope that he will be given time to build the squad gradually in his own way by adding quality to what we already have and keeping the team spirit by not destroying his ethos with overpriced players on ridiculous wages (e.g. Sven). I'm sure he will spend if he believes he is getting value for money and I think his targets in the main will be players that have experience in either the Premier League or top flight divisions in other top leagues in Europe, not unproven players from lesser leagues/countries which tend to be more of a gamble. This strategy would rule out a lot of the players that we are are linked with by the media and also on this forum. There will be ups and downs but I trust him to make the right signings to help establish us as a decent Premier League side. The most important thing for me is that we keep Pearson as manager. He has completely won me over after I previously had doubts about him last season and before. Even if we struggle early on next season I think we need to stick by him because he will more than prove his worth to us in the medium to long term.
