nc_fox Posted 26 June 2014 Posted 26 June 2014 As you can tell from my profile, I am an American. Looking at the group, we just need a point to advance to the next round. What is everyone's take on this match? I will be honest and say that I do not believe that we can beat Germany or maybe not even score, but I do think we can cause them some headaches. If we do not at least draw, we have to hope that Portugal wins or if Ghana wins, that they do not pass us on goal differential. I like how we have played this WC (except for Bradley ) and hope we can show some fire tomorrow. USA is not in top ten in the world yet, but hopefully before too much longer and with Jurgen at the helm we will be. Thoughts?
New England Fox Posted 26 June 2014 Posted 26 June 2014 They will go through in the most anti climatic game ever. US media has been going so over the top about this game as usual. Both teams know a draw is enough, so it will be a tame uneventful game in which neither team will try too hard to score. Either that ort Germany wins 3-0
Fox92 Posted 26 June 2014 Posted 26 June 2014 I knew they'd qualify all along; Klinsmann is no idiot. Any chance of Germany and USA just playing out a draw to see them both safely through?
Guest Sharpe's Fox Posted 26 June 2014 Posted 26 June 2014 USA will work hard for a draw, but probably will still succumb to the German machine. With Portugal's goal difference still think you'll qualify, though. As for your question about the top ten? The opposition you are facing in the CONCACAF qualifying will probably mean your coefficient will not increase significantly enough for long enough to rise in FIFA's shoddy rating system.
Jordan Posted 26 June 2014 Posted 26 June 2014 Part of me thinks both the Germans and Americans will be pragmatic and play a dull game with both sides thinking about the next round. The other part thinks we'll have a go, with Löw and Klinsmann trying to one-up each other, in which case my Yanks--exhausted from a tough two games in terms of opposition, weather, and travel--could get pasted if they are not making forward runs off the ball responsibly. I hope we can continue to play with the determination shown in the first two games with a little more prudence in positional play and a little less carelessness giving away possession in midfield. I honestly think both sides will give it a go--at least for a little while. I think USA will continue to line up in a 4-2-3-1, sit back early and play for counterattacks, and gradually feel their way into the game. If our game stays tied or a one-goal game into the 60th minute or so, then the other game will determine whether or not to play a more enterprising style or just see the game out. It's better to have Belgium in the second round than no second round at all, but an extra day's rest, easier travel, better weather, and a weaker opponent in the second round are all worth a lot. Klinsi started Bedoya and Besler in the heat and humidity of Manaus against Portugal after they had both failed to finish the game vs Ghana. I wasn't surprised to see them both struggle again. Regardless of how much of a go the US will give, there's no sense throwing them both out there to get subbed off later when we have perfectly fine options that can replace them anyway. I'd throw Chandler and Brooks in there (plus, they're German-Americans, and will both really want to play) and move Cameron to RB, where he's probably more comfortable. New England Fox's comment about the US media going "so over the top" is just snide and stupid. This is a very big game for a country that has only placed in the top eight once after the days of leather footballs, and where more of its people have watched either of the US's first two games than any other soccer game in history. You can check out the media south of the border and well beyond if you really want to know what "over the top" means. And as for whether or not USA can or cannot go into the top 10 in the FIFA World Rankings, while CONCACAF opposition can hinder us, we do have other advantages: 1) Our confederation's championship, in which games are worth more points, is held every two years, 2) The special edition of Copa América scheduled for 2016 in the USA could be another chance to rack up points (with a good performance, of course), and 3) Klinsi will want to set up as many high-profile friendlies as possible for the next World Cup cycle (and before the UEFA "Nations League" kicks in, which could deprive us of opportunities to play European teams). Ranked 13th now, USA are pretty close as it is. Yes, the World Rankings certainly use an imperfect formula, but it's important for teams to learn and exploit that formula if FIFA continue to use it to pick the top seeds at World Cups. Edit to add that I am nervous because this game could very well not go our way and I continue to believe Ghana will take Portugal down today.
Super_horns Posted 26 June 2014 Posted 26 June 2014 Doubt over the game? https://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/blogs/the-rio-report/germany-usa-game-hit-rainstorm-biblical-proprtions-125840406.html
Ric Flair Posted 26 June 2014 Posted 26 June 2014 I'm a quarter German but I hope the Yanks spank them in all honesty. I've tried to cheer the salmons on before but just can't bring myself to do it with any meaning.
foxfanazer Posted 26 June 2014 Posted 26 June 2014 Is Lawro for real? "I'm not being disparaging but I thought that guy was a tramp?" What a nob
Danno Posted 26 June 2014 Posted 26 June 2014 Muller is absolutely class. Would love to see him in England.
wakeyfox01 Posted 26 June 2014 Posted 26 June 2014 America making Honduras look like a clean team in this.
CosbehFox Posted 26 June 2014 Posted 26 June 2014 Found it rather interesting that when US decided to start a differing centre back to the normal it wasn't one of King Fox's scout spots.
