fleckneymike Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 With the prospect of Ulloa joining for somewhere north of £7m and becoming our record signing, it made me realise how consistently rubbish we are at paying good money for good players. Akinbiyi Mills Jones Wise Eadie Scowcroft Rowett Blake (not Nathan) Since Matt Elliott in 97 have we ever actually spent 'big' and bought well?
Mark_w Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 http://www.foxestalk.co.uk/forums/page/recordtransfers.php For those who are interested in a full list rather than a list of just those signings that didn't work out.
Vardinhio Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 Ian Walker was a success here, we may have been relegated but he was generally a decent keeper.
fleckneymike Posted 17 July 2014 Author Posted 17 July 2014 More frighteningly, of those 15 how many would you classify as a success?
fleckneymike Posted 17 July 2014 Author Posted 17 July 2014 Bit harsh on Scowy, thought he was alright. He cost £3m+ when that was still a good chunk of change for a forward (let alone one we were told was just like Teddy Sherringham)
Corky Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 He cost £3m+ when that was still a good chunk of change for a forward (let alone one we were told was just like Teddy Sherringham) Adams sticking him on the wing didn't help his game though
Mark_w Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 More frighteningly, of those 15 how many would you classify as a success? Not many, there are some very good signings in the record transfer fee progression section though. Not that any of this is at all relevant to the signing of Ulloa.
Jace Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 Matt Elliott record signing 1.6million what a bargain that was

Dan Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 The vast majority don't work out for us. But Pearson's never really made one...
Mark_w Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 post 1998 it doesn't make great reading Yeah all two of them.
DennisNedry Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 Ulloa for £7 million will be the next Akinbadbuy if it goes through.
fleckneymike Posted 17 July 2014 Author Posted 17 July 2014 Adams sticking him on the wing didn't help his game though He actually scored the majority of his goals stuck out on that wing as we used the tactical masterstroke of hoofing it up to Scowcroft to out jump the opposing fullback. Remember Levein coming in and saying we've got a £3m striker playing on the wing, lets try him up front. Played him up top against Crewe on a Tuesday night and promptly put him back on the wing in the next match.
hackneyfox Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 Don't think scowcroft deserved criticism I do, he wasn't very good, Adams and his 'diagonil' balls didn't help, but he failed to meet most of those balls, and those he did went out for goal kicks or throw ins. Defenders ended up just standing off him and waiting.
fleckneymike Posted 17 July 2014 Author Posted 17 July 2014 Yeah all two of them. I was actually referring to the overall list of record signings.
fleckneymike Posted 17 July 2014 Author Posted 17 July 2014 how much was mark draper? £1.25m, now he was a good player.
FoxInTheBirstallBox Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 What worries me most is his goal celebrations…. piss poor if I'm perfectly honest, sort it out boy
fleckneymike Posted 17 July 2014 Author Posted 17 July 2014 Great player and stood out in that team. He was that much better than the rest that sometimes it was like being at primary school when one of the older kids was on your team
reynard Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 Alan Clarke in 1968 and Matt Elliot are the only two I can recall who have worked out ok as record signings go. At least of the ones I can actually recall playing. Basically of all our record signings in my lifetime all except those two have been a waste of money. Let's hope we can break this pattern now. We've payed a lot too much for some of those players. Obviously should add Len Glover to the successes as well.
