Tuna Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 Sinclair served us very well, in today's money that 2 mill would be about 4 - 5.
Brauny Fox Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 Ulloa for £7 million will be the next Akinbadbuy if it goes through. Do you want to explain why you think that?
Sampson Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 From that list. Elliott and Walker were very good players for us. Sinclair was also good. Those 3 were all worth the money, no doubt. Scowcroft and Rowett did decent jobs but not really worth the fees we paid for them at the time. Everyone else turned out to be well overpaid for.
Guest MattP Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 Mark Blake wasn't that bad. Remember him scoring at Oxford on his debut with a scorcher. Most of them were shit but that's because we had shit managers for most. It's not a coincidence. We now have a talented and very competent manager so it's pointless worrying to be honest.

Bayfox Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 Ulloa for £7 million will be the next Akinbadbuy if it goes through. Just wrote the same thing on twitter and fb. Depends what we class as a big signing. Elliott was class. Eadie was unlucky with injury. Although we knew that and still let him pass a medical. Akinbadbuy, mills, beckford don't make clever reading. But np tends to get it right. Reckon if he had stayed he would have got more out of waggy.
dayday Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 Rowett and Eadie were quality.... just very unlucky with injuries... As for Jones he is another who should not be in that list because he came with a high reputation, but also sustained career ending injury.

As for Jones he is another who should not be in that list because he came with a high reputation, but also sustained career ending injury. Jones never really looked much good before his injury though. Although he was still young and could easily have improved to be fair to him. I agree, I think Rowett was a decent player, not a £3mil player, but certainly not a disaster. I wouldn't really call Eadie quality, he was decent enough back-up, but again, overpaid for.
Steve_Guppy_Left_Foot Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 He cost £850k but even £15m would of been good business for Steve Guppy.
LanguedocFox Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 It's my age, I know, but I have good memories of all our record signings during the 1960s: Bobby Roberts was a big strong midfielder in the Jack Charlton mould; Peter Rodrigues was one of the best full backs we ever had (his sliding tackles were a joy to watch on muddy pitches); Willie Bell was another solid full back; Len Glover was like lightning on the wing; and Allan Clarke was only with us for a season, but stood out as a class act, especially early on. All of them were signed by the same manager - Matt Gillies. It would be something special if NP makes five record signings like that over the next few years.
Ric Flair Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 I said this the other day. We haven't paid more than £2 million for a player that's been a success ever. Here's hoping Leo does the business, he looks a composed chap when he plays.
Jace Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 Several of us have referred to some bargains MON picked up but even he really struggled to pick up cheap decent Premier League quality in recent years especially at Sunderland
skegness fox Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 Ulloa for £7 million will be the next Akinbadbuy if it goes through.Disagree i think he is the sort of player we need as long as he gets the service and with knocky, mahrez, and albrighton i think he will. A big strong lad up front is another option as a lot of his goals are headers and with service he will score goals!
Filbert_Ross Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 Can't think who the big money Blake is? Help me out.
Candidcamera Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 I think that it depends on who the manager was who took the plunge. Not that Pearson has always got it right he is part of a team and Walsh has a great record. Drogba was the main difference for Chelsea and Walsh spotted him as a scout for Chelsea. Also, as we know you have to be established Premier League to get stars that are better than you already own. A goalscorer is always the icing on the cake and will always be considered too expensive.
Hirsty The Blue 94 Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 Jones made one of the best debuts I have ever seen and looked pretty decent until his injury problems.Rowett we sold on for decent money as well so it's harsh to criticise him too much.
teblin Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 Eadie was a good player, just very unlucky with injuries. Rowett was Steady Prob worth the cash we paid. Other than that, it's quite a depressing list.
leicesterseddon Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 Well, when we bought Akinbiyi for £5m, we were definitely 'spending big' by our own standards at the time. There's a question mark, however, about whether spending that amount of money in the modern-day Premier League even counts as spending big. I'd say it's pretty much the norm now if you want to buy any striker between 20 and 29 who might make it in the Premier League or has a track record of having done so.
Guest MattP Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 Can't think who the big money Blake is? Help me out. Mark Blake. Our record signing for about 350k around 1991.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 I think it's more that we tend to be slightly conservative with even our bigger money signings - for example, settling for Beckford at around £3m when we were looking at the likes of Jelavic and Long. Akinbiyi and Mills perhaps aside, we have spent far less on transfer fees historically than most other clubs of our size in my opinion.
Izzet is God Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 From the list, Walker has to the one stand out of good buy. Sinclair, Eadie, Rowett and Jones IMO all were ok buys. Ok some of those were sick notes but when they did play they looked decent enough. We have unfortunetly been tarnished with the Akinbiyi buy - it seems that since then we have somwhat of a curse on us when spending big....
Aus Fox Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 Is there a list of every player we have purchased for 2.5 mil +?
Fez of Mahrez Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 Is there a list of every player we have purchased for 2.5 mil +? Yeah here you go mate... A. Akinbiyi A. Donkey A. Sicknote A. Shyster F. Interrible G. Zuswhatwerewethinking O. Mygodwhataripoff Y. Doweeversignanyoneformorethanfiftypence
Filbert_Ross Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 Mark Blake. Our record signing for about 350k around 1991. He was the only Blake I could think of, didn't realise he was our record signing the time.
