The Blur Posted 28 August 2014 Posted 28 August 2014 I just thought this should have merit a separate thread- what are people thoughts on this? I thought Hart should have got the job- more consistent and positive than Rooney and we do not even know where to play Rooney!

No brainer for me On the form, he is our best player yes but being the best player in the team do not necessary mean they need to be the captain-just look at Neymar/Silva of Brazil for the example. However Hart is much more consistent than Rooney and is less likely to be dropped.

Posted 28 August 2014 Posted 28 August 2014 Had to be Rooney, Hart is a Goalkeeper and is vocal enough on the pitch organising the defence, would probably be a decent captain, but I don't think it would make any difference if he is wearing the armband or not. Cahill, could be a decent captain, he is a solid player but not one I really see as a leader probably because he plays alongside Terry. Rooney is such a divisive player, but hopefully it sends out the message that he is wanted and he is important to the future of the team. There has been a lot of speculation over Rooney and England and him not getting the captaincy would just lead to more. It was the right call by Hodgson and hopefully it will really make Rooney as the England player we know he can be, and mean that we see a team and formation for the Euros that puts him in his best position and alongside players that complement him.

The only other option is Hart and he doesn't need to be captain to assert his authority. Rooney's the only realistic outfield option.
RobHawk Posted 28 August 2014 Posted 28 August 2014 Urgh! This highlights everything that is wrong with the current England Squad. I'd question Rooney even being in the squad right now! I can't remember the last time he really had a good game at international or club level! He was at the World Cup and i thought he did OK, got a lot of stick that i thought was a little over the top, but even then he missed some absolute sitters. He doesn't come across as captain material to me, but i've never met the bloke so can't comment, but he hasn't had too good a start as captain on united. That's not all down to him i know but having seen all 3 united games so far this season he doesn't seem to be driving them forward or rallying the troops either. Has he really just been given the captaincy because he's the biggest name in the team/ best player on his day? Poor decision for me!

Not too fussed about Rooney being the captain, but means he has even more chance of not being dropped now which I think is wrong, especially as Hodgson was close to dropping him in the World Cup. Hopefully Roy realises that to get the best out of Rooney he has to be playing as a striker and with a partner and conveniently Daniel Sturridge looks at his best when he has a strike partner too. Take note Roy.

They shouldn't be captain, just because they are the best players. I saw an image from the World Cup where Macherano was passionately giving a talk to the players, and Messi was just behind the group with his head down. As for Rooney, he's the only decent option really imo.
