Anyone got any advice about decent areas, good boozers, restaurants, shops etc? Only ever had cause to go there to watch Leicester so don't know a great deal about the place apart from the fact it's got its own Mosh nightclub.

By far the most drab of the three East Midlands city's and I say that as not a particularly big fan of Leicester. The only good thing about it is it's very close to Nottingham.
Tommeh Posted 24 September 2014 Posted 24 September 2014 Not an awful lot to report here, I commute to work just round the corner from Pride Park everyday from LE2 and would never consider living here full time. Just feels a pretty deadbeat place with very little going on, certainly compared to Leicester. People are generally ok though from where I am, that will change when you go within a stones throw of their shopping centre though but I guess that can be said about anywhere. I'll hopefully catch you at Palace and fill you in more on this 2nd tier gaff mate.
Guest kristianity77 Posted 24 September 2014 Posted 24 September 2014 I used to live up there close to the centre and to be honest, I think its a decent city. Its quite modern in the centre and very clean. All the bars on a night out are all in the same area. Never more than a minutes walk to the next bar and always a decent atmosphere. This is going back 18 months or so but I doubt very much has changed. There is even one nightclub although I cant remember the name where you have to walk through an all you can eat Indian Restaurant to get out. Thats a money making machine that is (at least, I could never walk out ignoring it!) Westfield is decent for shopping and outdoes the high cross in size and sheer number of shops as well.

This, it's not much different to here to be honest, quite shit. If you want to go out just get the train into Nottingham and get a cab back. Least the last bit is half of the price of what it costs to get back here.

FoxInBlue Posted 24 September 2014 Posted 24 September 2014 I lived there for three years whilst at uni and in my second and third year lived in a house just off the Markeaton roundabout behind McDonalds. It was around the area of Mackworth (or Shackworth as it's known locally). It wasn't a great place to be honest but if you carry on up the Ashbourne Road (away from the city) you come arcoss some pretty nice villages.
Smudge Posted 24 September 2014 Posted 24 September 2014 If your intention is to move back to Leicester area, I'd be considering somewhere in the North of the county or South Derbyshire such as Melbourne, which is only 9 miles from Derby.

Ozwin Posted 24 September 2014 Posted 24 September 2014 I have moved here for uni, it's a bit of a dive, I've never know so many random people to come up to you and ask for spare change, it's unbelievable some days walking around the center. The town's alright, the train station is a bit of a mish though but I suppose it could be worse.

Vardinhio Posted 24 September 2014 Posted 24 September 2014 Ashby de la Zouch, Melboourne may be a good bet. Ashby has a budy town centre at weekends whilst Melbourne is pretty nice with some decent pubs. If you want to live in a city just stay in Leicester or move to Notts. Derby itself is a hole.
pSinatra Posted 24 September 2014 Posted 24 September 2014 Used to go with someone from Derby a few years ago. She lived in Allestree, which she said was a sought after area in Derby. She was very proud of it, despite it being nowt special. The first time I went out during daylight in Derby, I asked her "where's the rest of it?" It's tiny & felt more like Loughborough than Leicester. If we ever went shopping or for a decent night out - we went to Nottingham.

Bugg Posted 25 September 2014 Posted 25 September 2014 I live in Derby at the moment for Uni, the place isn't too bad (certainly not as awful as some people are describing it) but I find the city centre to be really small considering the population of the city. Ozwin is spot on about being constantly harrassed for change though

Like I say, eventual plan is move to Leicester and commute. Will probably just set up shop in Derby for a bit while I assess my options and save. I've lived in Nottingham most my life and I'd rate some of my nights in Leicester as the best. Maybe I just get bored of Notts. Derby on the other hand is the worst night out Ive ever had. And I go Uni in Stoke (the worst city in England)
