No matter the standard of some BDO players though, the point about it being the grassroots talent spotter for the PDC still stands and as such it deserves recognition. As someone above me said, without the breeding ground the PDC wouldn't have the players coming through to the elite ranks. Having it on TV gives the grassroots exposure which is important for talent spotting - in the PDC you need a face and a reputation as well as the skill.

Was the breeding ground, it isnt anymore? Have more than a handful of BDO players in the recent past been offered tour cards? I can only think of Klaasen, Bunting, Whitlock and Barney if you want to go back that far.

I like most young players now go on the PDC tour and if going BDO only do it to end up playing the big boys.

At the very least they need to stop calling this a World Championship, it's an insult to do so, you've got people winning matches with sub 80 averages.

Sorry Footballwipe, I've watched the "highlights" in the last couple of days and this is appalling. I want to watch things I couldn't do in a darts match, hit consecutive 180's, hit 9-darters, high checkouts. I'm great at hitting 1s and 5s when aiming for treble 20 and I've seen plenty of that.

There was a shot last night, aiming for the Bull, that landed near the treble 1, amongst several wayward shots. The averages are awful. Even the announcer sounds bored with it.

Bristow has every right to be bitter towards the BDO, they royally fvcked him over, and all the other pros at the time, they were forced to break away.

The whole lot did, blokes at the top making a fortune off the talent of others and paying them bugger all.

Snooker players bringing ten times as much cash with similar viewing figures.

Don't watch it then, maybe? The BDO has every right to stage it's version of a World Championship. I'm not disputing the quality, some of the averages are horrendous, but the BDO like the PDC is a private business and has just as much a claim to staging it's version as the PDC.

The quality of the lower PDC players is also horrendous, but that's something that's squirrelled away and hidden so well because the best talent from the BDO come over to the PDC to make their money and ply their trade, meaning the overall standard of a tournament in the PDC is, understandably, much better.

Simply put, without the BDO you don't get the quality in the PDC. Like football, there are only a select number of truly fantastic players. The FIFA World Cup is hardly packed with 32 world beaters is it?

No but the best countries in the world are in the World Cup.

If the winner of it wants to call himself a World Champion he can, just as I could be darts World Champion if I hold my own version down the pub.

One of the real issues is license payer money being spent to find it.

BDO has been poor for a while, but like FootballWipe said if it wasn't for the BDO you wouldn't get the quality the PDC has to offer now.

Look how well Bunting has done already, he has only been in the PDC a year. The likes of Chisnall, Huybrechts & Winstanley all joined around three years ago, bit before that you had the likes of Whitlock, Thornton & Webster, also it's always seemed to be a path for Dutch players, Barney, MVG & Klaasen all started out there & joined the PDC at a similar time, more recently Kist & Van De Pas.

So to be fair it does have it's benefits, as well as some flaws.

Gary Anderson truly deserved this, i'm glad for him, and I'm even happier than he knocked out MVG cause he might play well but looks like a bastard to me... to much arrogant

Van der Voort, Anderson, and Van Gerwen all started in the BDO, Even Adrian Lewis played there first.

The BDO is a lot like the FA, their revenue goes to all areas of the sport whereas the PDC is focused soley on the 'elite' and can therefore attract the better players because their TV deals mean they can pay much more.

The BDO standard is always going to be lower as the players are by and large budding amatuers, criticising it is akin to criticising the standard of the FA Trophy. I enjoy both and accept each for what they are.

As other posters have already said, the BDO has been a breeding ground for much of the top talent in the country, the split in the 90's was due to the BDO leadership still being run very much by volunteers and well meaning county men, they lacked the nous to secure the TV deals the top players wanted and deserved so unsuprisingly they all left.

Crazy scenes in Australia today during a bit of an exhibition between Van Gerwen and Whitlock!

Just incase the link does not work, a few of the hilarious mentions on the BBC website include commenting on the crowd disturbances - "Images show a man dressed as Batman's sidekick Robin wrestling with an English knight, while security guards try to calm the situation down".

"Other pictures show men in Hawaiian shirts and also a gang of Oompa Loompas throwing furniture".

And finally posting a comment on a captured picture - "Batman's sidekick Robin and an Oompa Loompa attend to an injured crowd member" You just couldn't make it up.

Anyway back to the Darts and congrats to the BDO ladies earlier, cracking final!

Seen all Durrant's games this past week, has looked quality in every game, very consistent.

The standard of the BDO final has been pretty poor. BBC haven't shown any averages, or how many 140's or 180's have been hit. Maybe their embarrassed

But the averages, outshots and 180s throughout the tournament have been of a good standard over all. Will never be as good as the pdc because of the gulf in prize money and the way it's presented. But it's been the best/most consistent arrows thrown at Lakeside there's ever been by a mile throughout the tournament.
