As a break from the incessant Pearson In/Out debate that grows greater every game, may we take the opportunity to do a little market research (sorry Sean) on a suggestion that was raised at the most recent Fans Consultative Committee meeting on 26 November 2014.

To paraphrase our minutes from the meeting (which can be found in full here) regarding the drum:

  • Susan Whelan said that the Club would like to find out more supporters’ opinions about the drum.
  • Jamie Tabor advised that there are five different sizes of drum available to the drummer. They have found the largest to be most effective as it offers a deeper sound which carries further, with the intention of getting all sections of the ground singing in unison, rather than different chants coming from different areas at the same time.
  • Susan Whelan said the Club are open to the idea of a ‘Kop leader’ to facilitate unity of the Kop and said this could be explored further. One committee member suggested using a microphone to channel the sound of the drum through the speakers to enhance the sound, and Susan Whelan acknowledged that the idea could be looked in to.
  • The Club has not received any complaints about the drum but one man did move his season ticket elsewhere as he didn’t want to be near the drum. Otherwise, feedback has been positive.

With the above in mind, we would like to get your opinions of the drum. Please take the time to leave comments below, whether you have any strong feelings (either for or against) or whether you are apathetic towards it, as well as using the voting buttons.

Thank you,

A smaller one in SK1 would be a good idea. as you can barely hear the one in L1. It would be good to get the KOP going and it would stop people banging on the back which the club don't like.

Also the drum needs to be used to keep everyone in time, not for starting all the songs

I don't mind the drum but I do mind how reliant a lot of people seem on it to be what starts chants.

Remember when it was first introduced in L1 it was actually decent and just complimented to songs. Which is how it should be!

We rely on the drum far to much these days at home.

The sound system around the ground is a laughable suggestion. Seriously?

I'm all for the use of a drum if it boosts the atmosphere.

I went to a Hertha Berlin game the other week and the use of a megaphone there was really effective. But maybe it's a suggestion that's better to build up to when more people actually get involved vocally?

I could just see it being used and the same people joining in. At least with a drum its more likely to get the clappers going.

Appreciate what you guys are trying to achieve

When I heard about the microphone suggestion I couldn't help but think of that incident a few years back (was it York?) where the home team got rumbled pumping crowd noise into the stadium. lol

Words of 'When You're Smiling' on the screens so we can sing pre-match and have a club anthem. Over time it will become customary to sing.

Drum at the front would be better.

You could also move the KOP

Pretty sure it wouldn't be York. You can barely here the tannoy in half the ground.

Think Bolton may have the drum over the tannoy if I remember correctly

We definitely rely on the drum. I don't remember it being there against Liverpool and we were absolutely shocking throughout.

It was there in the first half.

First 25 in L/K were okay then it died away.

Wasn't much better when the drum got introduced at HT.

Drumming sections are a big part of Brazilian football support

contibuting to some points raised here

- they are many drummers 2 or 3 of each size at the games here, gets very loud so you hear them around the ground

- having separated drummers far away from each other would not work imo and could even work against getting the crowd in sync

- you could have 2 drum sections separated but they would work independantly taking it in turns as some clubs do here but that's not what we need at KP right now

- the drummers start some songs/chants but the other supporters do their own thing too - the drummers needs a rest after all in no ay do the crowds here rely only on the drum sections fo chanting but they are good to get things going during lulls in the vocal support

- megaphones not used here but seen them used in eastern european grounds and they are very practical but need for fans to recognize there is one leader of the chants and to follow him religiously that requires respect and organization to the leader and by the fans

if anyone wants to come to brazil and go to the samba drumming clubs / football games here I will be happy to help organize

get drumming - it's part of football

I don't mind the drum, but it's actually done more damage to the atmosphere than anything as people now rely on it. The crowd needs to learn to be spontaneous again and to be able to sing without being prompted.

Why.

Because I sit there and my moaning about the drum will be louder than the drum.

I don't mind the drum. I just feel we are too reliant on it to keep the atmosphere going when we aren't playing well.

At the Liverpool game, we had people looking towards the back wondering where the drum was. A lot of people don't join in with chants if the drum isn't banging.

Do you guys feel like you need one in SK1?

Pretty sure if SK1 got a drum it would be a quarter of the size of Jobbers.

The only people that would be able to hear it would be the ones in the direct vicinity singing the songs, the songs get sung louder as the drum keeps the pace the correct speed and then more people join in.

It's no coincidence that when someone bangs on the back of the stand the song gets sung louder, then when they stop the song dies out.

Genuinely think a small drum in SK1 would make a world of difference.

I've noticed that, when someone is banging on the back everyone starts to join in. A small drum in the union FS section would be a big help in getting the KOP singing loud.

Also when would the drum be introduced? I'm guessing not Man City but maybe Spurs?

If SK1 gets a drum I'm taking a Tuba in.
