How Pearson could prove me wrong

Recommended Posts

Last week, I started a thread saying that Pearson was done and should be put out of his misery.

Today's performance, if not result, told me I could end up with egg on my face. I hope I do.

Here's why:

  • Today's formation worked. Cambiasso-King-Drinkwater as a combination of players worked.
  • Simpson is a better defender than De Laet. That doesn't mean RDL's days are numbers, merely that his attacking instinct is better served as an impact sub than a starting player.
  • We're a good attacking force when we have the balls to get in the faces of the opposition. Vardy, Schlupp and Mahrez were excellent.
  • We absolutely need a new left back.

We categorically did not look like a side languishing at the bottom of the table. Had Jon Moss actually used his eyes and given us a penalty, we might have got a point.

Much is being made of Burnley's run at the moment. Understandably so, we're five points behind them.

Let's be clear here. They're not a great side. What they are is a side riding the crest of a wave in terms of confidence. They've had a bit of luck, luck that stems up back to a fortuitous goal in the game at our place. A game they'd have lost 99 times out of 100. If Burnley can go on a bit of a run, so too can we.

It's often said you learn more from your failures than your success and I disagree in this instance. We've learned numerous ways that don't work since Manchester United, but a way that definitely does in today's game against the blue half of Manchester.

Stick with it, and we'll survive.

Just learn from the past eleven games and move on.

Totally agree

Drinkwater/Cambiasso/King is right, well probably more that the system was right.

If we'd have played it over the previous 10 games we'd have picked up quite a few points I think.

It's not every week you're up against Silva/Nasri/Toure etc

I think the next game is his last if he loses. 2 points from 36 is just not good enough whatever the opposition or the positives it's a results business.

Good post Bilo. Best midfield for us today, it works and actually compliments as both DD and King will cover for Cambiasso when he goes forward and also keep the ball.

Way less hoofball today than previous weeks (except Wasyl and Konch towards the end).

Worked hard, Mahrez needs to get his fitness up so he can maintain some of class he showed. Jeff was ok and helps out defensively.

Vards works hard but lacks that clinical touch but he's improving.

New striker and CB for me.

Hammer was good.

King/ Drinkwater/ Cambiasso was OK. I would say try it next match as well.

As for Simpson, wasn't it him switch off that let them score? May have got that wrong as it was the other side to me.

I would rather have Schlupp at LB than Konch currently.

Knockaert was on for 10 minutes and he looked very good to me. Was it a handball from his free kick?

As for 1 or 2 signings? I think we need 5 or 6 players for the first team.

Another unsung hero today for me was Hamer, a lot fan's did not have faith in him for today's Match! fair play to him as I think Schmeichel is massively overrated imo. Glad to see some resolve from the team and we stayed strong pretty much the whole game, I think we have found our best defence for now! I always thought simpson would be solid! Feeling a bit more positive after today. We have proved to be a very up and down so far this season, I thought we would be tougher to beat home than we have been of recent. Come january I think we would all agree that we need to sign a striker and A quality left-back?

Fair post only point I don't agree with is we definitely need a new left-back.

Other fans might have a different opinion, but I thought Konch was solid today & had a good game.

And I have to say we know by now he will struggle in some games, but he certainly hasn't been a disaster this season.

As it stand He doesn't have any pushing him in his position though and back-up isn't a bad thing! especially if he was to get injured or suspended as Schlupp has been used more in attacking position's this season. But well soon find out what Pearson has planned in january!

It was Wasyl ball watching

Simpson's job was to stop the cross and he didnt get into the correct position to do that, which pulled Wes out of position to close in on the cross, Wasilewski was in no mans land unfortunately, but I think fault would have been at both Wasyl and Simpsons door, Wes done what he had to do positionally but failed in the block.

Just shows you the fine margins in defeat and a draw at this level, We looked so much better at the back today than previous games... We were poor today but weve been awfully woeful recently.

Agree with the OP. Today gave me the hope that I could be eating a massive slice of humble pie.

Continue like that and we could get out of it, especially if we can add the requisite quality in January.

I just watched the goal again and you're half right in spotting Simpson mate. It started with hi doing his job of tracking Silva and then closing down Lampard in midfield. If he had continued to track him into the box we could have avoided the goal. Wes was drawn out to Nasri who by rights he should have been watching. Was standing 30 yards out in the middle and neither closing down or being in position and then ball watching and pointing at others didn't help.

Link up play from Toure to win it, Silva to Lampard to Nasri was lovely stuff. Good run continued from Lampard and Wes backing off Nasri until too late and then challenging meant many factors for the goal. All small margins that added up.

Championship defending Vs Prem class really

It was great to see King back in the side. And I thought he had a good game.

Simpson is a much better right back than RDL.

We really do need a sniffer up front. That's clear now.

This. Its amazing that out of King, Drinky and James, King has looked the one most comfortable in the Prem. Its clear that Simpson is a better RB than RDL. But I suppose we all knew that already really.

Gotta agree with you here bud

Surely one of these midfielders should have picked Lampard up? We're not talking about your average opposition player here, it's a player that has walked into penalty areas in the past and scored for fun.

Exactly...that is what he does, and today was no different.

He used to score 20 a season at Chelsea, because he is a genuinely world class player. His late runs are what he has always done, and no side has found a way of stopping it.

Opinion is split because despite the poor run the team have not been far off in many games.

The evidence points in one direction however. We cannot defend but we can score. In the first few games when we were doing well we were still conceding goals regularly which puts the strickers under huge pressure. Eventually that took Its toll and the goals dried up but they started up again against QPR and Villa.

Our first priority must be defence so it follows we need better defenders. Wes is not really Premier Leagur and Was is getting on. Konch is not brilliant either.

Getting better strikers will cost alot but better defenders are a different matter. Of course, a good striker would help but if the defence does not improve it'll count for nothing

Full backs are key attacking players in the Prem

Having 3 in the middle allowed Schlupp & Mahrez to do a much better job on Sagna & Clichy than has been done on full backs in all the games prior to yesterday

People going on about Konchesky? How many goals has he conceded Vs RDL/Simpson? Although that's not really RDL's fault that Mahrez has been woeful at tracking his man until the system allowed him to stay wide to help keep Clichy back yesterday

Imagine if Pearson had of played 3 stopping Gerrard, Lallana & Co having such an easy game carving us open & the same goes for almost all of the games since Utd

It is the only way to play, else we're certainly doomed
