Daft Punk

Recommended Posts

Signed a big deal with Sony recently. Expect a fair bit of stuff from them in the next few years.

Dying for a tour though. Think they're doing some festivals this year. Rumours of Glastonbury.

10 THINGS WE LEARNED FROM THE NEW DAFT PUNK ALBUM

We’ve just finished listening to Random Access Memories. Here are some observations...

1. The Seventies disco thing has been overstated

It’s more yacht rock to our ears. Fragments Of Time is a tune as smooth as a cleanly shaved Michael McDonald.

2. Get Lucky isn’t the catchiest track

You can stop hitting refresh on YouTube now. Lose Yourself To Dance, the other Pharrell/Nile Rodgers collaboration, is ready to take its place in your head.

3. The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas can rap

Yes, it sounds like a terrible idea. Yes, the first words he utters on Instant Crush are “I didn’t know I’d be the one to **** up.†But the vocals, delivered at a frantically fast pace, are right at home.

4. Daft Punk are as into Eighties sci-fi as we are

Blockbuster finale Contact is straight out of that disco in The Terminator. And if Kitt from Knight Rider doesn’t get a credit on The Game Of Love, he should sue their bionic arses.

5. Slow clapping is better than fast clapping

Seriously: the slow clapping on Lose Yourself To Dance is up there with that on Thriller.

6. Human drummers will be good for work for a while

When the coolest electronic band on the planet choose to use live drums instead of machines, you just know others in their field will be following suit.

7. Robots get horny, too

Along with violins and a beat slowed down to Barry White proportions, the lyrics to Beyond are more than a little bit saucy. Although how you “get busy†in one of those helmets remains a mystery.

8. Monologues are good to dance to

Giorgio By Moroder lasts for nine minutes, and is basically the Italian legend’s love letter to electronic music. That might not sound like a recipe for a full dancefloor, but it is.

9. Daft Punk can make anything hip

Even Broadway. Transforming a seemingly trippy piece of electronica into an orchestral piece complete with choirs, trumpets and music hall vocals, Touch is camp-tastically cool.

10. There’s a secret track that features Emeli Sandé singing on it

Just kidding, don’t worry.

Random Access Memories is out on 20 May

I got around to listening to it last night.

have to say I quite enjoyed it. Liked the Moroder interview half way through, though do wonder if its on the album!! Hope so.

It is, I read this yesterday, sounds brilliant....

When Giorgio Moroder, the legendary producer of Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love†among innumerable other hits, turned up at their Paris studio, he was first startled by the news that the duo’s notion of collaborating with him didn’t involve him playing music, but instead telling them his life story — “I had no idea,†he says, “what they were thinking†— then by the fact that the recording engineer set up three microphones in front of him.

“I said, ‘Am I that important that they think if one microphone breaks down, they have the other ones to record?’ So he said, ‘The one on the left is a microphone from the Sixties, the middle one is of the Seventies, the one on the right is the best microphone of today. Whenever you talk about your childhood and beginnings, we’re going to use the microphone on the left, when you talk about the Seventies we’re going to use the microphone in the middle and then the one on the right is for when you talk about today.’ I said, ‘Who is going to know the difference?’ He said, ‘Nobody’. I said, ‘So why are they doing it?’ ‘Ah,’ he said. ‘Nobody except the boys. They will know.’â€

Nice thanks, I keep seeing those videos around but not got round to watching them, I'll watch them all as they're in one place there.

On another note, Amazon have the new album for £4.99!

I've given it three listens from start to finish and really like it. I can see why some people aren't liking the lulls where they've gone for a bit of yacht rock considering the expectations of a Daft Punk album but I'm liking the Steely Dan touches in that regard. Can't get enough of Giorgio by Moroder, I like Touch for the Paul Williams vocals (such a random choice), Doin' Right has a strange late 70's/80's Beach Boys vocal vibe, Contact is just astonishing.

I really wish I had a yacht to play this on.

Listened to it about 5 or 6 times since I bought it yesterday. Can't make my mind up as yet. To me the album sounds quite self-indugent, almost like their own Prog rock album with all those 9 minute tracks.

Discovery is one of my all time favourite albums, just stand out track after stand out track and so many instant classics - for me, RAM doesn't grab me in the same way at all. It's more like an impressive work of art than something outright enjoyable.

I can't quite decide yet either. It's not clicked with me yet, despite some obviously excellent tracks. The crazy hype and bandwagon jumping isn't helping either. Agree it's not as initially grabbing as Discovery, which was pretty much faultless tbf.

I'm genuinely loving the album. It definitely hasn't got the wealth of stand out tracks that previous DP albums have had but as a whole it's superb. The collaborations feel right in a sometimes totally barmy way and I agree that it's almost self-indulgent but I'd say it walks a fine line between self-indulgent and personal. I can understand if people have been a little underwhelmed by it but I really like this direction, I guess it's had too much hype and expectation.

Doin' it Right and Contact are still blowing me away, especially the live drums on Contact.

The sample from Contact is pretty cool also:
