Dismissing folks concerns as 'nimby' is unfair as well as tiresome. Blaby district has probably been more developed in recent times than comparable areas elsewhere. Blaby council have even offered to take on some of the city councils housing requirements. The golf course in Enderby as well as the Western Golf Course (significant part of which falls within Blaby district) all earmarked for further massive development. When you throw into the mix the main arterial roads on that side of the city/county, I think folk have every right to voice concerns because so much has been already carried out in their 'back yard', not to mention other bordering areas/authorities.

I guess I'm fortunate in that the simple things in life give me pleasure and make me feel good. Two things this week, both involving our feathered friends. I was sitting under a tree in our garden when a young family of Wrens appeared. There was about 6 or 7 of them, clearly oblivious to my presence just 3 feet below them. They were hopping from branch to branch looking for tasty morsels and also going up to their mother on occassions for an helping hand - well, beak. She too, was also keeping an eye on proceedings This only lasted around 2 minutes but was an absolute delight. Then today, whilst sitting on a bench in Bradgate Park, several swifts gave me a low level aerobatic display for a few minutes. They even circled where I was sitting several times. Wonderful.

On the subject of noses; there is something deeply satisfying about removing any big bogeys that form up there. Finger only mind, using an hanky or tissue just isn't the same. There was a time they would get eaten too - but I've grown out of that now.

Error of judgement?

Imagine if that happened now, with the often long waiting times for an ambulance? You can imagine a scenario where the A&E doctors would be coming out to tend to/stabilise any injured persons until the ambulance arrived.

Fed up with 'Albert Einstein ' in ads on TV and even appearing here on FT, telling us about the virtues of a smart meter. We have one. We have one that doesn't work properly. If that isn't annoying enough, British Gas are doing sod all to remedy the situation, despite many contacts on said issue.

I feel whilst some effort is certainly made to improve facilities and areas of the city by the council, they can be fighting a losing battle.The council don't always get it right but too many of the local populous more than contribute to areas degenerating. Perhaps a small but indicative example, are the revamps of some local parks tennis courts. In conjunction with the Lawn Tennis Association, several courts have been revamped and a very good job they have made of them too. We played on one of the newly completed courts two weeks ago and they are excellent, though litter was already appearing. We revisited the same court yesterday. Already the fence has been vandalised in two places and one of the nets all but ruined. A group of lads just sat in a group on the edge of one court just looking at their phones, despite having the whole park to choose from. Despite notices saying the facilities were for tennis only, two different groups were playing football. Then some young girls arrived and were roller blading on one courts. During our game of tennis, young lads would just walk across our court as though we weren't there! Then there was the litter. Far more this week even though the courts are surrounded by half full or even empty bins. Moan over but it is depressing.

My brother in law went through a phase a couple of years ago, of having 3 or 4 new TV's in a short space if time, as either replacements or for bedrooms. I dreaded the inevitable phone call to help set them up. He had differing makes so new accounts needed to be created to access some features. Also, existing accounts for things such as Netflix, YouTube and so on needed the passwords inputting. Trouble was he had around 10 different passwords for various thing and would get them mixed up. Took us hours sometimes - and I'm not exaggerating.

We also used to say the Lords prayer each morning in our class at junior school and had an assembly each morning when at secondary school.

Have you finished creating all your accounts and inputting your new and existing passwords, just so you can watch the bloody thing?

I worked in Scotland for a while and I found that was absolutely NOT the case

We bought our first house, a 3 bed semi, in 1980. The equivalent cost today, allowing for inflation, would be £58000. However, those same houses are now going for 4 times that amount - £230000! I really feel for those entering the housing market for the first time. How have we allowed this to happen?

We have a summerhouse at the end of our long garden. My brother in law said if it was his, he would run electricity to it and have all sorts in there. Why? You are basically recreating your living room. We are all different of course but I find it great to get away from all that when I'm in ours.

I worked with several Asian fellows and everyone of them claimed to despise him. One was openly critical of him, so you can imagine my surprise when I spotted a Keith Vaz calendar on his desk. He went on to explain that he had had meetings with him and his staff to enlist his support to enable my colleague to 'import ' a wife from India. So we cannot be surprised he was regularly voted for, and may well be again. People tend to follow their own self serving interests.

At the risk of sounding like the 4 Yorkshireman sketch - we had it tough. When we got the slipper across our backside, the teacher drew a chalk X on his desk and we then had to place our nose on it, then whack. I also had one of the climbing ropes across my backside because I leaped onto a rope and did a Tarzan impersonation. Try telling the youngsters that today, and they won't believe you.
