Guest Kopfkino Posted 11 May 2015 Posted 11 May 2015 The new series of Benefits Street in Stockton is on C4 at the moment. Anyone watching, what do you think?
Larry_LCFC Posted 11 May 2015 Posted 11 May 2015 Those programmes just wind me up. I will just bury my head in the sand and pretend that those scrounging rats don't exist.
lavrentis Posted 11 May 2015 Posted 11 May 2015 its a shame people will just cast them all off as scumbags
Danno Posted 11 May 2015 Posted 11 May 2015 And now for the Conservative Party political broadcast ...
Tielemans63 Posted 11 May 2015 Posted 11 May 2015 Disability benefits for having a bad memory? Bloody hell. Didn't even know that was a thing. Still spending it all on weed should help.
ADK Posted 11 May 2015 Posted 11 May 2015 I'd imagine it would be even worse than the first series because the people on it will be well aware what it's about. Very exploitive and sad that this is what passes as good TV.
Captain... Posted 12 May 2015 Posted 12 May 2015 Disability benefits for having a bad memory? Bloody hell. Didn't even know that was a thing. Still spending it all on weed should help. Really? I'm sure I told you last week...
David Guiza Posted 12 May 2015 Posted 12 May 2015 My girlfriends flatmate at Uni comes from Stockton-on-Tees and claims, surprisngly, that in reality the area and public are nothing like that, then again it's not like channel 4 to overhype a situation in order to boost viewing figures. It is a very depressed area however, clearly, and I think that article that came out a week or so ago regarding the life expectancy of a child in Westminster/London as opposed to one born up north was Stockton-onTees and the difference was something ridiculous like 89/90 to 60 odd.
Jon the Hat Posted 12 May 2015 Posted 12 May 2015 Good to see the Labour MP turned up for a photo op and then buggered off again without talking to anyone.
Guest MattP Posted 12 May 2015 Posted 12 May 2015 Some cracking moments again, the guy who had to get in and out of his flat from the balcony because he lost his keys was brilliant, turning up at court pissed in a vest takes some doing, imagine being in a mindset where that sort of behaviour is totally normal? Felt sorry for the girl who was plastered across the Sun as Mrs Orange or whatever it was, that was an example of the press taking advantage of the poor and thick, should be ashamed. No symnpathy for most of them though, shows we can go a bit further on cutting the welfare bill when we see people gettig payments for memory loss then sucking up on a bong at midday, though I'm it wil defended by the usual suspects. Good to see the Labour MP turned up for a photo op and then buggered off again without talking to anyone. What an absolute leech he was.

Must admit to not watching this type of programme. having read through your comments from the last series though I'd have thought that some (many) of those on it, see this as being their 15 mins of "fame" with the target of being the celebrity that makes a million like "White Dee". So it probably won't be very "real". Labour would have benefitted from making the differentiation between being the party of the working people and being the party of the working class / low paid people. I think clearly saying that they would attack the "benefit cheats" as clearly as they said they'd attack the "tax evaders" would have got them a lot more votes. I don't really think the "rich" could care less what the benefit cheats get up to. It's the man who is working hard for not a lot more money than those who don't work at all who get annoyed. I think many of the "Tory" righteous on here are those people. New Tories (like Webbo) who want to get significantly more than those who do nothing for working so hard. These people were traditionally Labour voters but they have moved to Tory - bypassing the Lib Dem proposition.
Guest Posted 12 May 2015 Posted 12 May 2015 I'm not a new Tory. Well you weren't a Tory in the 70's - that's what I mean by new Tory. I'm pretty sure that going to Soar Valley your family (and therefore your youth) was more red than blue.

Webbo Posted 12 May 2015 Posted 12 May 2015 Thanks for the context and my apologies. You must have stood out like a sore knob at Soar Valley then. Not especially.
Merging Cultures Posted 13 May 2015 Posted 13 May 2015 Just watched the first one. I feel sorry for the guy who was let go from his construction job and keeps getting sanctioned. It seems he has some problems yet to be explored on the show. The druggy guy needs to be locked up. The media messed up with the half Indian woman, calling her orange. It's a horrible show.

I dont see how locking him up is going to help. You put a budding *ahem* entrepreneur in a big building with lots of criminals - what do you think is going to happen? He learns a more harmful trade or he gets involved in something else, no one gains anything productive. The bloke who lost his job also lost his girlfriend as she died right next to him in bed but it looks like he hit the bottle hard and is now having fits. I feel sorry for him and I dont want to make assumptions on his old girlfriend (couldve been a smackhead idk). That orange woman was a complete idiot, as is anyone who takes this selected street-full of people as the flag bearers of everyone on benefits. We need intelligent solutions to complex problems, stereotyping and condemning people off them is not the way to go

We need intelligent solutions to complex problems, stereotyping and condemning people off them is not the way to go As far as I can tell, the druggy has had several run ins. He has probably been offered training. I can't imagine as a repeat offender, with no prospects and 'memory loss', he was just sent back out to re-offend.Plus, he lives in the UK. The amount of options available, for someone who is motivated and wants to better themselves, are immense. From the brief episode, it seems to me he doesn't want to better himself. No stereotyping going on. These people have opened themselves up to public opinion. In all I said, I directed it at the individuals, not blanket statements.
