If anything people respect new guys at the gym who are trying to improve themselves.

Yeah exactly.

End of the day everyone's there to better themselves so you can't really take the piss.

I'm sure everyone's come across these but just in case, here are some amazing diet calculators. Going to add them to the first post as these sites are amazing help imo

http://iifym.com/iifym-calculator/

Calculates the calories you should be eating day in day out based on body stats and weekly fitness routine, including macros.

Based on calculations above you can sort yourself a diet based on calories/macros/dietary requirements.

Any sole fitness goers here?

I rarely go to gym with anyone else, I feel like I can concentrate most when I'm on my own with my earphones in.

I don't like being social in the gym at all tbf

Me, living in Birmingham at the minute so go by myself. I prefer it apart from when doing my push session and I need a spot!

Pretty sure "sole fitness" is a gym not "do you go gym alone?" Or have I missed a trick....

I originally thought that, then others started stating they go alone, so I presumed that lol

hahaha! Apologies for the confusion gents. I meant Sole fitness in Glenfield. Quality gym if you're near the area.

Oh awks.

How's Klick Fitness these days if anyone goes there? It was quality the last time I went there, bit overcrowded in the weights area at times though.

This is why capitals are actually important! :P

Been going Parklands for the past year and lost 3 stone. Could do with losing another, but that last one just doesn't want to seem to shift.

Always toyed with the idea of joining the gym, say every month im gonna join. Gotta be honest and say im too scared of being judged by all regulars there though.

Pretty much my issue too, albeit I'm a member and now go very regularly.

If you're not an absolute meathead the free weights areas at gyms are pretty intimidating places to go.

Currently I'm trying to gain weight - I'm eating about 150g of protein a day, going to the gym regularly and have managed to put on a whopping 5 lbs in 3 months. It's hard work.

Do you do a lot of cardio? That could be hindering you putting on weight as you might just be burning too many calories.

I've got a gym set up in my garage as the times I got to go the gym were just too crowded and I couldnt get my routine going.

Bought a squat rack, bench, kettlebell set, dumbell set, barbell set, loads of weights, resistance bands and a punchbag.

I go in there, stick some tunes on and blast out a workout for an hour. I dont think i've ever been in better shape.

I'm on the look out for a cheap flatscreen tv/dvd combo to stick on the wall so if I feel the need to do a cardio session I can do one of the insanity workouts.

Got the whole get up in my garage but I'm so lazy with it. Have 1 good workout then 3 bad ones which can be very demotivating. Main issue is postural and joint issues due to sitting all day. Putting a pull up bar up atm though which I'm looking forward to using, should help my back and core which are very weak.

You really need to calculate your rough TDEE first if you're having trouble losing or gaining weight. Then you need to be measuring exactly what you eat and drink and consuming ~250-500kcal above your TDEE. People are usually really wide of the mark.

Saying that, 5lbs in 3 months isn't bad at all if you're not putting on any fat. You will be though, 20lbs of muscle in a year would be ridiculous.

My bench is weak as ****, anyone got an advice?

As in your actual bench is a bit unsteady or you cant lift too much?

If its the latter, switch to dumbells instead of a barbell. Less pressure on your rotator cuff.

Can't lift much, my rotator cuffs are weak and get injured all the time.

Have you looked up proper bench press form? I saw a video a few weeks ago and didn't realise it was more complex than back flat and press.

You need to be retracting and depressing your scapula and arching your back. This video is good but there's some comments on it to expand further.

Sounds like a good set up. How much do you estimate you spent in total?

What's everyone's fav gym workout tunes?

Cardio - RATM or Green Day

Weights - Mos Def

Without fail. Creature of habit.

Some drum and bass with a big job, Netsky or Camo & Crooked usually or something angry like Eminem.

I've spent about £600 so far but i'm always adding or upgrading.

The squat rack was the best purchase as I actually do squats now which have helped me massively.

Tunes wise:-

Livin on a prayer - Bon Jovi

Fool for your loving - Whitesnake

Waitin for an alibi - Thin Lizzy

Refugee - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

Black Knight - Deep Purple

Paranoid - Black Sabbath

You get the idea.

One other thing that I advise to anyone having a home gym to do is to put a mirror up.

Form is so important and a mirror is essential.

Literally just use 8kg dumbells or 10kg dumbells and do 3 sets of 15. Normal

Bench, incline bench and incline fly. Do it 3 times a week and on the days when you do it, only do that and leg work.
