Alton Towers "crash"

The fact they are closing other rides suggests it may have been a technical issue after all, although it does say safety protocols rather than a technical fault, so I'm not really sure.

I've seen reports that the other rides have been shut down at the other parks to allow for 'staff training', this would indicate they've noticed something in the training that hasn't been covered or followed properly and caused the accident

The injured are lawyered up already, fair play to them if the alleged injuries are as serious as reported in the press

it may not help her in the long run i must say her being already lawyered up. seems to me alton towers are basically saying the families of the victims will be sorted for life. having a lawyer already who is arguing with them could make them give less.

I have to say Merlin are dealing with the PR aftermath of this brilliantly to my untrained eye.

Injuries sound awful. One girl has lost a leg above the knee and her friend had two broken knees a serious hand injuries.

Do you have a source?

Edit: Just seen on the BBC website. That's horrific.

Interested to see what the compensation is...

How much money would you have to be offered to lose a leg?

Not enough money in the world as far as I'm concerned. It's hard to even put a value on it.

Obviously it's a terrible thing to happen losing a leg but if we're talking £millions...

So far Merlin have made all the right noises in regard to "looking after" the injured people. The last thing they want is for it to become a "Thomas Cook" scenario, and so far the Merlin group has handled the aftermath very well.

But when it comes down to putting a value on it - very difficult to say. I guess they are going to have to dig very deep.

Even so, I would take my leg over any amount of money they could ever offer.

the source there. she was fine the other day i thought. My thoughts are with her and her conenctions cuz that is just horrible. if you believe the papers as well it was their "first date" too. Jesus christ i dont know what to say!

Some confident people there saying they would happily ride the smiler today. Confident or stupid. I suspect the latter.

I'd lose my left leg for £2 million.

Couldn't put a price on my right leg it's like a wand.

I would ride it still. But that doubt would still be in my mind. I believe they are right in what they say about how you are more likely to get hurt driving there then when you are on the roller coasters. They will find the problem and they will fix it one way or another.

Imagine if these victims were on 'Rita', which is apparently one of the fastest rides around, and crashed into a carriage in front of them.

They would've been killed.

The accident wouldn't make me any more or less inclined to ride it. If anything, it's likely to be safer now that they have more stringent checks in place.

Although there has been no official report, I think the cause has been identified and it seems that it was as simple as the operator(s)not visually checking the track for a stuck train and so the assumed it was a "false" error. The re-start procedures have been changed now.

It doesn't help the poor buggers who were injured, but the chances of it happening again are virtually nil

More likely to be in a bad car accident than an incident like on the smiler. Suppose you will never set foot in a car now then

I believe Rita only has 1 train

It's got a history of potentially very dangerous accidents. If they didn't make it safe after those warnings why should we believe it will be safe now?

It shouldn't have been possible for it to crash even with human error.

Suggests ride operatives, maintenance, management and the designers were all partially at fault.

You're safer on an aeroplane than you are driving to an airport, but I wouldn't expect too many people to be comfortable flying on a specific plane that had a history of crashing.
