England v Ireland and Slovenia

So Rooney has scored more goals against teams that aren't as good? Who'd have thought? It's a well known fact that all other world class players refuse to play against easy teams because that would be cheating.

My take:

Hart : had little to do, bit frightening with his passes some times, surprised he's the best we've got.

Jones: bit of a donkey, plays more like a CB

Cahill: beaten a couple of times but reasonable

Smalling: looked better than I've seen him recently, not sure what he was doinf when they scored

Gibbs: had a great game going forward, terrible defence for their second, best of the back 5 on the day -which is a bit worrying really

Henderson: okay, played as well as Jones at the back, had a decent 2nd half - not sure what he's supposed to do though;

Wilshere: easily motm, was really, really good from start to finish, broke up the play well, man marked that blonde tosser well and then pushed forward for two stunning goals.

Delph: best I've seen him play (which isn't saying much) first time he's not been embarrasing

Townsend: he plays the same game every time. Hasn't seen a shot he doesn't like - was okay

Rooney: played some neat 1,2's and passed the ball well. Shooting was atrocious missing 3 absolute sitters

Sterling: best game for ages, got the ball and terrorised the defence, nice runs, nice passes, lacking confidence in shooting though

Lallana: made a positive difference when coming on. knows how to get forward and pass.

Walcott: Why? may as well have played Vardy or Austin

Clyne: Henderson preffered to him as replacement says a lot!

He really isn't all that good though is he?

Embarassing to think he'll be our top goalscorer very soon.

The only shining light was Wilshere yesterday.

Even without his goals, his all round play is different from the rest of em.

He can hold the ball in midfield and do the 'give and go' thing (clearly schooled in the Arsenal way) which has been the mainstay of all the top teams in the world, both domestically and internationally, over recent years.

In this respect, he wouldn't look completely out of place at Barcelona, for example.

IF he can stay fit (a big if) he's probably going to be England's most influential player for years to come. It's such a shame we don't have a player in a similar mould to play alongside him. Like an English Santi Cazorla, for example.

The likes of Henderson are solid enough but not in the same mould as Wilshere IMO.

I've been looking forward to really seeing what Wilshere can do for years now. Alas, I don't think we have the quality around him to make a big stake of actually winning something.

The back four is the main issue. That needs sorting. Though I hate to say it, we need Terry back to partner Cahill.

Neymar's scored about half his goals against the likes of panama, Japan, Iraq and China in friendlies.

Rooney has been a decent striker for us. He's had a few disappointing tourneys but he was by far our best player at the world cup. He hasn't quite lived up to his potential but that has been obvious for years. Nobody still claims he is world class so these "Rooney is shit cos he's not as good as Neymar" dweebs just need to get a grip.

To claim that Rooney is 'shite' is no less utterly ridiculous than claiming he is 'world-class'. He is and always has been a talented footballer who has been over-inflated by the media and many football followers.

The fact remains he's failed to live up to expectations on the big stage when it really mattered on numerous occasions (sauf 2004 maybe), just like the England team as a whole.

lol

The only success he's had in Spain is in making himself look more like a woman.

Bale, bow THERE is an overrated player.

Yeah, got pretty much the same stats (or better) as Hazard this year despite having a "bad" season, scored the decisive goal in last year's champions league final, scored the winner and was MOTM in last year's Copa Del Rey final and is single handedly carrying his country through qualifying for the Euros.

You're right, over rated as hell.

lol you muppet, try harder.

I think he will just be happy with his bite haha.

Just out of interest if we drop Sterling (<Matt>Stirling</Matt>) who do you play instead? There's probably only one player better than him suitable for the wing and that's Walcott. Lallana is more suited to playing centrally as he showed yesterday when coming on.

He may not be showing the form that got himself the limelight 12 months ago but he's still one of few players we have that can receive the ball in the final third and make something out of nothing. Same with Barkley, the amount of people saying he's overrated and awful surprises me.

I can't believe the state of our midfield options at the minute, we're really lacking a world class player in the middle of the park. Also I'd give anything to have a top quality set piece taker again. After watching the Ireland v Scotland game and seeing Maloney and Brady whipping in dangerous balls, it makes me slightly envious that we don't seem to have someone that can deliver a ball like that.

Absolutely spot on about the lack of the set piece taker. I'd forgotten that.

Any team looks so much more dangerous with someone who can use the dead ball situation to its maximum.

I'm hoping Christian Fuchs helps City in this respect.

Is Frank being serious?

Bale is a fantastic footballer.

His work - rate for Wales too is phenomenal.

Well that was a test yesterday, great performance and in my opinion our best performance in this group. Slovenia certainly gave us a game and good test, just what we needed. Attacking wise we look good, however at times we are just no putting away our chances. Up front I do feel we need to look in putting a regularly scoring striker, at times Rooney doesn't miss a few sitters. Though of course he did get the winner. Our back four let us down yesterday, as people keep saying we haven't found our perfect back four yet.

I'm not the biggest fan of Wiltshire but yesterday was his best in an England shirt.

Looking around the other groups I ain't half noticed, England are really the only bigger nation to almost have qualified for France. Other nations like Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Are all making a meal out of there groups. Typically normally Germany are poorish prior to the tournament, but once in the tournament they suddenly find there form.

Reading back a few pages this thread is turning into a Hodgson in/Hodgson out debate.

Reminds me of a few months ago when it was Pearson in/Pearson out, a change of manager isn't going to suddenly make us world beaters. It's also a lot harder to manage international sides as you are not with them week in week out, imo Hodgson has built a solid platform, we are unbeaten, who cares how we win. If Leicester did what England are doing none of you would be moaning about "boring football". It's the longest unbeaten run since 1996, give them a bit of credit.

Records like unbeaten runs are irrelevant in international football. Friendlies are important but results in them shouldn't be considered significant in statistical terms.

The only thing that should matter when it comes to judging a side of England's calibre and resources is tournament results.

By that measure, Hodgson should not have kept his job after the world cup.

Inept doesn't begin to cover it.

Rooney >>> Bale

Rodney's hair >>>>>>>>> Bale's hair.

Bale's right foot > the entire England team.
