Father Ted Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 I think this would be a very astute signing. Has been very impressive for West Brom over the last couple of seasons. Seems a good professional and knows the club already. On a one year contract there's little to lose, it can't go worse than Upson's year here really.
Spence Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 really don't want to see this happen if Nige wants him as a first choice CB next season. nowhere near the quality we're looking for. too add more experience and replace Upson on the bench i would say its a good idea. add some fresh thoughts and is already familiar with us.
Guest MattP Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 Makes sense to me, strengthen the squad if he replaces Upson as backup and fshould free up more cash for us to spend on our top targets who will be impacting on the first team. You get the feeling some people expect us to sign Mats Hummels now we've done well for a few months.
GingerrrFox Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 Morgan wasn't a hybrid of a full back/centre back and he did alright in a back 3. Wasilewski would be more adept at full back than Morgan but I wouldn't say he was a FB/CB hybrid either. Rather, what we did in the run in was load our back 3 with 'tough tackling, bodies on the line' defenders with a lot of nous and experience, a covered their flanks with pacey energetic players in Schlupp and Albrighton and it worked fine. Wasilewski spent the majority of his career as a right back so he's very adept and experienced in a wider position. Morgan was the weak link at times in our back 3 whether that was on the ball or being exposed out wide. He looked the least comfortable of the back 3 in his position. Gary Neville described it perfectly when he said in a 3-5-2 formation the wide centre backs and wing backs are the ultimate specialised positions. He felt very comfortable playing under Glenn Hoddle as the right sided centre back because it was a CB/FB hybrid role and he felt most comfortable defensively when playing as a right back. Ideally we would replace Wes Morgan as of the back 3 that finished the season he was the one most likely to give the ball away or be exposed positionally. Too many to mention from last season but you could make a compilation of the gaffes he made in a back 3.
MPH Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 All players should be improving what we already have. That's how the squad gets better. We certainly don't need another Upson. McAuley played about 30 games in the prem last season for west brom so he's no upson..and we have 'nothing' in the whole that was voided by knocks... So both definite improvements on what we already have!
Max Power Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 Huth/McAuley for the central spot Wasyl/Moore/De Laet for the right sided spot New Signing/Morgan for the left sided spot Plus of course we can play a back four as well.
Freesolo Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 He is prehistoric but with a Ton of experience and a year or two left in him at most, I would like him at Leicester, Problem is he is probably settled at West Brom and if he is offered a new contract why leave? its not as if we can offer him anything WB can't, we will be playing to stay up just like them, maybe we have bigger ambitions long term but he is not going to be here long term so unless he gets offered at least 40% bigger wages then see no reason for him to leave, can't see us pulling it off.
Bluearmyfox28 Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 Huth/McAuley for the central spot Wasyl/Moore/De Laet for the right sided spot New Signing/Morgan for the left sided spot Plus of course we can play a back four as well. So you reckon we will sign 3 centre backs this transfer window?!
Max Power Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 So you reckon we will sign 3 centre backs this transfer window?! If we play 3 centre backs we'll need to surely? Especially if Moore goes out on loan and Upson is presumably released.
Bluearmyfox28 Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 If we play 3 centre backs we'll need to surely? Especially if Moore goes out on loan and Upson is presumably released. I would imagine Liam would have a recall clause in the loan deal & De Laet can be utilised as a centre back to make up the 6th man.
Max Power Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 If the ony upgrade we make to our defence is McAuley for Upson I'd be disappointed.
Babylon Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 If the ony upgrade we make to our defence is McAuley for Upson I'd be disappointed. We've already signed Fuchs, so it wouldn't be. Happy now?
4everfox Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 I'm all for McAuley as a replacement for Upson but if we don't sign Huth as well then we are going to need a top drawer defender instead. If McAuley is an alternative to Huth then I too would be desperately disappointed. I've said from the day the season ended that we will need two centre backs so if that turns out to be McAuley and Huth I'd be satisfied. If we just sign McAuley and no one else I'd be more underwhelmed then when we signed Upson.
Bluearmyfox28 Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 We've already signed Fuchs, so it wouldn't be. Happy now? We are Also trying to get Huth & I'm sure if we don't get Huth we will get someone else so he should be extra happy now?!
BrummieFOX Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 If he's a replacement for Upson I honestly don't see the problem with it at all Yea exactly. If Upson goes, Pearson will replace him. Solid, experienced centre backs that will push for a place are hard to come by. West Brom fans rate him highly and on a free it would be a good signing for me.
Max Power Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 We've already signed Fuchs, so it wouldn't be. Happy now? I'm talking centre backs MATE We are Also trying to get Huth & I'm sure if we don't get Huth we will get someone else so he should be extra happy now?! Huth was here last season
Thracian Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 So you don't think McAuley would improve on Upson? Being fit alone with be an improvement on Upson. It's a flimsy argument...and a limp one if McAuley gets injured as well!
MPH Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 Happy to have him... but i'd feel a tad dissapointed if we got him and missed out on Huth....
Babylon Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 It's a flimsy argument...and a limp one if McAuley gets injured as well! It's fairly obvious that McAuly would be an upgrade on Upson, he's been playing regularly in the prem where Upson hadn't been for several years. Upson barely played, If McAuley was fit for about 8 games it would still be an upgrade on what we had last year. It's not really a flimsy argument at all, 22 year old could get injured and miss a whole season.
Bluearmyfox28 Posted 9 June 2015 Posted 9 June 2015 I'm talking centre backs MATE Huth was here last season Someone's time of the month....
mugshot Posted 10 June 2015 Posted 10 June 2015 He is on the released list for West Brom so removes those saying he could be happy at West Brom therefore we need to convince him to leave
queensguardfox Posted 15 June 2015 Posted 15 June 2015 signed a one year extension with west brom.... hes not going anywhere.
