A fans' village is planned at the King Power Stadium

Leicester City plans to set up a "fans' village" in the car park of the King Power stadium where supporters can gather on match days.

The club is seeking a licence from Leicester City Council for the operation which would be set up just off Raw Dykes Road.

The club had little to say about the idea when contacted by the Mercury but documents lodged with licensing officials said the fans' village would involve a temporary marquee, an outdoor bar, seating area, and screens that could show football coverage.

The club has also indicated it would like the fans' village to run when the stadium hosts rugby matches. It has three Rugby World Cup games scheduled for this autumn.

In a statement, the club said: "We are continually exploring potential improvements to the matchday experience at King Power Stadium.

"Our recent application would potentially open a number of opportunities, but it does not relate to any imminent development plans."

However the club has requested the licence be granted from the end of this month.

Chairman of LCFC Supporters' Club Cliff Ginetta said: "It's an idea that has been talked about before.

"Liverpool has been doing one, Tottenham have too and Burnley did a good one.

"They are catching on and I think it's only a matter of time before all Premier League clubs start doing this.

"I'm all in favour of it and hopefully they will be able to create a nice family atmosphere.

"It also might stop all the fans rushing off at the end of a game."

The club has requested licensing hours of midday to 9pm seven days a week but has stressed the fans' village will be restricted to match days.

Currently pubs near the ground fill up with fans enjoying pre and post match beers.

Kieran Lyons, manager of The Western in Western Road, said he was not too worried about potential competition.

He said: "Since the club got into the Premier League we have been about 50 per cent busier on match days. We are always packed out and full to the rafters.

"Our customers are very loyal.

"We specialise in real ales and I would imagine the club would be racking up the Carling well in advance.

"This might actually complement our business."

Officials at the council are considering the application.

Who on earth is going to go and drink carling in a car park watching the early kick-off when there's plenty of pubs nearby that have better beers and aren't ****ing car parks?

I guess a lot of those filling out the cramped undersized concourse for starters, families who would find it difficult/worrying to take young kids into pubs, perhaps disabled people. I'm sure they've done some research and think it's worthwhile.

They could start by posting my season ticket then maybe move on to a ****ing village when they have mastered the art of supplying someone with something that they have bought.

I'd probably have one for the road (back up to the pub) after the game.

Not so much in the middle of winter mind you.

I think it's a great idea. For too long this game has been turn up at 3 and go your separate ways at 5 - it should be more of a communal event that lasts much longer than the game itself.

Hope it doesn't damage the local pubs' business but they have their own USPs which the club won't be able to touch.

the liverpool one is good.

if they sell half decent beer at half decent prices, not even good beer at good prices, people will go and it will hopefully have a decent atmosphere.

A big if there. Hopefully the service will be a bit quicker than in the ground too.

It's a good idea if done properly, especially for the kids and those with kids. Maybe could get a couple of players who are not involved to do some mixing with the fans pre match.

It would be nice if there could be a way of coming in and out the ground pre match too.

Good idea. Be good if they could do a deal with Everard's to support a local business.

Not sure it'll change my usual pre-match route mind.

Could make it like a nfl tailgate atmosphere which would be great. Food and beer and stuff for kids so long as its all reasonably priced.

I've always thought that should happen down the Saff.

It would be a good idea if it wasn't depressingly obvious they'll be selling warm Carling at £4.50 a pop.

Some of our fans really do drive me to insanity with their instant negativity about absolutely EVERYTHING. The license hasn't even been agreed yet, and already its been written off by some. Give it a chance for god sake and actually wait to hear the exact plans before dismissing it.

I'm all about optimism when it comes to the football and free travel/shirts but concourse hospitality will most likely always remain the same- high prices without the quality to match.

I'll give due plaudits if they serve some decent stuff but when it comes down to it and you stop and think- why would the club go through the extra logistical burden of bringing in a different batch of quality beers when they could quite easily just add to the order of warm Carling they already get? On top of that, surely the club realises that the fans would catch on that they're selling cheaper, higher quality beer & food outside and not buy the more expensive (and therefore more moneymaking) alternatives inside.

Just doesn't make any business sense for the club to make it anymore than just an outside concourse with an early kick-off on a big screen.

It depends what their business angle is. They would sell a lot more at a lower price outside in a more chilled out environment than a higher price inside, therefore probably making a bigger profit. It also depends on whether it lives up to its name and is actually for the fans, rather than a straight money making scheme. I will fully support the idea until proven otherwise but only time will tell I guess.
