If we go back to the OP, what would you do with Tara? Tara is cleartly masculine; and there has been cases in the past where in female prisons transgenders have been very harshly treated more so than the transgenders in male prisons. It's been tried and tested.

 

So what would you do?

There must be some contact with other prisoners, otherwise the whole argument is moot, apart from the fact that she wants to be treated as a women, but is in a male prison, if she is kept away from all other inmates, as she probably would be if she was in a female prison, due to the penis issue, then it really doesn't matter.

 

He has contact for 1 hour per day where they are under guard watch. He showers alone. Precisely, that's why I don't see much of a problem, it's not like he's been thrown to the wolves per say. You're damned if you do, damned if you don't in this situation. However, it's being handled as best it can be, by keeping him separate from the other prisoners as much as they can. I really don't know what people expect or think should happen here.

You've all misunderstood me. That was just my best guess as to MPH's personal identity, because that's an educated guess at the demography of most posters on here. I'm not saying "Let me guess, you're a white privileged male". 

My point still stands - 

Personal identity isn't some small - 'leftie' ideal. It's a fundamental aspect of human life. And our ability to express it, have it tolerated, accepted or embraced by others is key to our personal wellbeing. 

 

 

Therefore if MPH, or anyone else on here goes through life expecting to be identified as the various factors that make up their demography, then why can't a trans person, when they choose to be?

Unless you're saying that she should be in a male prison so that female inmates cannot be raped. But then if she is not sexually attracted to women then I don't think that would happen either.

We don't put gay men in women's prisons and they're not attracted to women either.

Personally I'm not bothered either way. I just find these black a nd white attitudes a bit silly. There are no easy answers but someone has to decide. The courts say he has to stay in a man's prison so I accept that.

Tara should be in a mans prison cause Tara is a man, it's as simple as that really. But to go with protecting her gender identity; they will help Tara as best they can. There are already transgender's in man prisons, same for woman prisons; this isn't a new concept. The idea of letting Tara stay in a woman prison because it will be more comfortable for Tara is completely unjustified in argument.

You say she has a penis and may assault female prisoners the chances are she fancies males so the risk is low. One thing with transgender she will not think off herself as a he so being in a male prison could lead to depression etc x.

This is highlighting how a lot of people in this thread are confused.

Transvestite = A man that likes to dress in women's clothing

Transsexual = A person who's sexual identity is the opposite to their biological sex

Transgender = A person who's personal gender identify is either the opposite to their biological sex and/or ambigous

But it's not that simple though is it, sure in terms of the law and how things are legally classified on forms and for state bureaucracy the 'facts are facts'. But the biology of it all is only part of the issue.

They can ask whatever they want, doesn't me everyone has to.

Perhaps all the women might not take kindly to having someone walking around who still has a penis, regardless of persuasion. Perhaps the sex starved women might fancy some c*ck? It's  all a lot of what ifs and guesswork. There's arguments each way and most people can see it each way. Regardless, there has been a ruling by people far more clued up on it all than any of us here, and I can totally see why they have reached that decision.
