Glenelgfox - A Fighting Fox

Recommended Posts

All the best Glenelgfox. Funnily enough, I was staying for a few weeks in Glenelg East for a friend's wedding back in November. Would have been nice to see a fellow fox!

Well my profile name is linked into the map tracker on here so any foxes talk members visitng Adelaide most welcome to send me a PM and try and arrange a catch up. Glenelg is the premier beachside sunurb of Adelaide and has a great selection of hotels, bars and restaurants right on the Beachfront and Marina and nearby surrounds. Especially great in the hot Oz summer which we are currently experiencing. There are 3 of us lurking around here in Glenelg as the SALCFCSC!

Thanks all for your wishes and support. Got out of hospital yesterday (Tues) afternoon and slowly recoverin at home and recomenced chemo.

My first name btw is Tony - Glenelgfox user name comes from Glenelg the main beachside suburb of Adelaide, South Australia.

I tie / share all my original family roots to the village of Skeffington in Leicestershire which still exists to this day and is my actual family surname. It features prominately in our Family Tree / Coat of arms. I was destined by blood to follow the LCFC.

Hi GFox,

I used to live in Adelaide too.... Pasadena.. 15 minutes away

all the best

Made it into the Mercury mate, big time now!

Which game do you have in mind for potentially coming over? Anything we can do to make it a little easier?

The power of forums, either someone has contacted the Merc or they scan these pages for stories.

Either way it's great for Tony and fingers crossed he will get his wish.

Thanks all especially Tom from FT - I am totally blown away first off by the on line story plus secondly making the front page of the printed copy paper with my photo is unreal. It is very humbling and a tad embarrassing to be honest as I never posted my original post in the other topic before this thread to seek charity or sympathy. I have been so touched with so many messages since the topic went up and now it has hit the Mercury I have been getting heaps of messages from people on here and on Facebook via the worldwide Foxes family. I have a few hard print copies being sent so thanks to all who have asked.

It is 1am here in South Australia and the Villa KO is at 4am so off to bed, record game an watch with complete media ban / blackout a bit later in morning.

Again - thank you all so much and C'mon City!!!

Crikey, some one has really picked up the ball and ran with it!

First time I've bought a Mercury in years! Absolutely delighted doesn't cover the half of it. It's a credit to the power and communal spirit of FT. It's just like one big family... constantly bickering but still deeply connected.

Tony, I hope all this fuss has made has made this more likely, or at least more wonderful when it does happen, and that you don't have to spend too much time fending off interest. I would hope that people would be respectful.

Even a negative result today wouldn't spoil my mood, and that is pretty amazing, considering how important it is.  :scarf:

I knew everyone would wish to express their support, if they had the opportunity, and also perhaps to hold their loved ones a little tighter. I thought that your matter of fact honesty and lack of self-pity said an awful lot.

It is a credit to the creators/moderators of FT, and the community of posters here, that one small effort was picked up and built upon, and it's been a privilege to be able to make a contribution.

Slightly disappointed after the result today but positive. We are still in dreamland!  :scarf:

The club has been contacted by a number of people and the Mercury however I have not had heard anything from them personally but they must get all sorts of requests etc. and from people in worse situations than me e.g. kids with cancer etc.

Plus a very busy time for the LCFC at the pointy end! ☺

A terminally-ill Leicester City fan whose dying wish is to see his team play live says the reaction to his story in the Mercury has boosted his will to live.

Tony Skeffington, 51, who was born and raised in Adelaide, South Australia, was given four weeks to live last March after being diagnosed with cancer.

Chemotherapy and surgery have helped him battle the disease and he hopes to get his doctors' okay to travel in March or April.

Since Tony's story appeared in the Mercury on Saturday people have taken to Facebook and other social media platforms, including fans' forums, to offer help and support.

Tony, who has appendiceal cancer, a rare form of the disease said: "I am overwhelmed by it all, it has really picked me up. I even had a guy from Canada get in contact to say 'keep hanging on in there' and 'keep your spirits up'.

"Things like that really lift your spirits and have boosted my will to live."

The messages included one from Steve Robertshaw, operations manager at haulage firm Cobley Transport, of Broughton Astley, of spaces for Tony and his wife, Donna, 51, in the company's corporate box at the ground.

Steve, 44, said: "As a City fan of 30 years, home and away, Tony's story struck a chord and we would love to offer him places in our box.

"I will also try and organise a tour of the ground and for him to meet some of the players."

In response, Tony said: "I've had lots of messages offering me tickets and tours of the ground and I would probably take up Steve's offer if I get over.

He added: "I am struggling with breath at the moment if I walk any extended distance.

"I chatted to my oncologist and he said let's see how I am post March this year and he said 'go for it' so you never know."

He added: "I had almost given us up for relegation last season when in the middle of the night in hospital and watching live, us and Hull ground out one of the worst drawn nil all games I have ever seen.

"That was at the time my cancer specialist gave me four weeks to live. Somehow I have fought the odds as did City and this season has just been magic."

He added: "Now I have retired, all my pensions and superannuation plans have kicked in so we are debt free, mortgage free and have money in the bank to make the trip."

The former police officer's allegiance to the club developed from a historic family connection to the Leicestershire village which shares his surname and some Leicester City players' cards given to him by the sons of an expatriate Middlesborough supporter as a youngster.

Tony, whose next round of chemotherapy is due to start on January 28, added: " The heartwarming and positive messages I have received from the Foxes family and beyond has given me something to fight for and City are going so well I'd hate to go to my grave without seeing them.""

SOME FACEBOOK REACTIONS TO TONY'S STORY

Leeann Thompson:" Aww surely the club could do something for this man."

William Shore: "The guy doesnt want handouts or anything, so how about this, his family pay for a trip out to see a match, and the owners could be like , we've upgraded your seat to a box (that way it will just seem like an upgrade and not complete charity )"

Em See: " Knowing how this club treats its fans & how most of its fans treat each other I can see this coming off."

Kurt Barley: "32 odd thousand people at the KP home games, I'm sure someone would give him the season ticket for the day."

Stacey Smith: "He could use my fellas n sons ticket id happily take it off them for this guy to use."

I'd also like to express both my respect and support for the OP and hope that you manage to continue witnessing our ascent up the table and our breakthrough season in Europe!

Words and sentences on a messageboard will probably never do the situation justice and I can only assume your diagnosis is both a physical and mental strain of the highest order.

I thus salute you for your strength and compassion - and it's great to hear football keeps putting a smile on your face.

This.

All the best , Tony!
