MON and Gary keeping it in perspective

Would making the winner of the FA cup go into the qualifying round of the Champs league instead of 4th place be a better idea?

Good luck getting the Premier League to hand that over.

The way English football is going isn't there a chance we'll only have 3 qualifiers in the next few years unless someone surprises us this year.

Like it did for Leeds?

one incredibly badly run club of an example.

agree with the post that says in a normal season i'd want us to go all out in all the cups. because a normal season for us would be try really hard in the cups and finish 17th, or give up on the cups and finish like 13th. they're both shit but one might give us a cup run.

it obviously doesn't go hand in hand, but if we have to "sacrifice" a cup run for a better league position then this season i'm fine with that. if we finish top 4 but we lost to spurs (no shame in that) then i'd be delighted. as said, finish top 4 and we're a new club. get to an fa cup final and we're not.

wigan, pompey, villa, hull, cardiff, west ham, millwall and southampton have all got to cup finals in the last 12 years and been relegated (some as far as league one and league two) within a couple of seasons. champions league, the money and the players that come with it will lead to fa cups and league cups in the future. gotta build for the future.

We'll be in every FA Cup for the next 50 years. We'll probably never have a chance this good of being in the Champions League ever again, and if we get there automatically/qualify for it, it'll change the face of this club for the next decade with the type of player it'll allow us to attract. So yeah, I'll take the top 4 please.

O'Neill and Gary are completely right, I was fed up yesterday... took me more than 15 minutes to get over it though lol but today I woke up and wasn't too bothered our second string lost in the cup.

I don't think either thing would transform the club tbh.

Whatever happens I'm sure we'll be back to being midtable again next season.

Whichever way you look at it, this season provided us a great chance to finish in the top 4 and win the FA Cup. Not sure either needed to be sacrificed and we probably won't ever have a better team than we do this season. So as far as I'm concerned it's an opportunity wasted.

But when the competition is having the piss taken out of it by the very people who are televising it then you know it's gone to shit. Maybe it is just meaningless for top clubs now.

I accept that but we've been in it for well over 100 already and still haven't won it.

Isn't winning trophies the point of sport? I mean, it may be the taking part that counts but winning is the aim.

Not saying the Champions League would be a disappointment in comparison to winning the FA Cup, but I do think people are forgetting the very reason sport exists when they say they're happy for us to go out of the cup every single season. We didn't want to win it when we were fighting for promotion, we didn't want to win it when we were mid-table in the Championship, we didn't want to win it when we were getting relegated and we don't want to win it now we had a realistic chance.

People talk about the club being transformed if we finish in the top 4 once but as crazy as this season has been for us it's unrealistic to expect us to be challenging for the league title for years on end as a result of it. I assume, in the interests of winning things is sport, that is what people are dreaming of when they think about a club transformed.

No, terrible idea.

Takes a top 4 team 38 games to earn their champions league spot

Takes an FA cup finalist 6, some of the games the opposition dont give a toss and probably want to get knocked out, others they might fluke a win. Imagine Wigan and Pompey in the champions league. awful idea.

We clash/ We agree. This my forum nemisis, I couldnt agree more.Well put, this is how I also see it.

AND no matter what some pundits spout off or top club management try to twist.FA-cup is also

a notch on their side-board.

Our badluck was drawing Spurs 1st up, we could of pipped them at their gaff.

Some foreign managers might take other priorities......but they are wrong.

like you said sport is sport and tournaments are there to be competed in to try and win.

I would rather a FA Cup win too. Getting 4th doesn't even get you into the Champions League, it gets you into the qualifiers where we could easily be knocked out as we wouldn't be seeded so would play one of the better teams that need to qualify. Much rather win the cup than play one tie in a competition we have no chance of winning anyway.

Yep, nail on head.

The fact of the matter is, its a low priority for pretty much everyone.

If you win it, great, but weve all got bigger fish to fry. Its the way it is.

For the first time last night Gary was actually pissing me off with his belittling of us. Asking questions like have they just been lucky? What a joke.

I like how much O'Neill still knows about the club. Absolute legend.

Don't think he said the word lucky once, don't know what you were watching.

People have been banging on about how this is a 'once in a lifetime' opportunity to get in the CL, and therefore we must spend big in Jan.

I guess the posters attacking the club for not taking the Cup seriously are different, but the contrast between the 2 shows the diversity of opinions on FT

No-one could ever accuse us of singing from the same hymn sheet, could they!

We could start an argument in an empty room...  :giggle:

Why do our fans get so hysterically moist over the FA Cup anyway?

The tournament clearly hates us. All the losing finals, consistently crap draws, regularly getting cheated out of it. If we qualified, we'd have more chance of winning the Champions League than the FA Cup next season.

We'll never win it so fvck their silly little cup and let's focus on proper tournaments like the league and the League Cup.

Tbf he only fronts the show. I highly doubt he writes the questions for the pundits.

Said it all along and I'll say it again, I'd rather win the FA Cup than finish top 4.

You need to stop living in the past and being all nostalgic. The cup's an unwanted distraction.

The cup has no benefits to the players or the club - either financially or otherwise

I want to see the club win a major trophy. How can that be no benefit.

In 100 years people would remember we've won a FA Cup, not remember we finished 4th.

But you won't be here in 100 years so why's it matter?

Because the club will be?

I'm proud we've played in four FA Cup finals, but I wasn't born to see any of them. History is a big factor of a club.
