Fox92 Posted 25 February 2016 Posted 25 February 2016 **Right first off people who aren't into trains don't start with your stupid comments, just leave the thread** The aviation thread rightly has thousands of posts but we've never had a train thread!? Basically I love trains, ever since a young age I have, sometimes I question why I'm not a train driver! Anyway, thought I'd start this thread today because I've just seen the Flying Scotsman on the East Coast mainline Absolutely beautiful sight. Been waiting all week (last time I saw her on the mainline it was 1999 so I was only about 7) and it didn't disappoint! Waited about an hour and a quarter before she passed through. I was at Retford (as I live about 10 mins away). Waited on a footbridge just outside the station as I read it wouldn't be stopping in the station.. But it did!.. Oh well, it stopped for water just under the footbridge before having to stop at a red light. Many people already at the front of the fence so I scaled it instead - Managed to sit on top of fencing which opens so I had no fence in my photos as it passed. .... Wonderful sight! Did anyone else see it today on the mainline? People were all over. It had to stop in Cambridgeshire because people were actually on the track. If not, what's everyone's favourite's then? Other than the obvious Flying Scotsman and Mallard I absolutely love Deltic's (I think they are class 55).

Fox92 Posted 25 February 2016 Author Posted 25 February 2016 As I said in OP my favourites include Class 55 Class 158
Voll Blau Posted 25 February 2016 Posted 25 February 2016 Cool to see the Fyling Scotsman running I guess. Apparently a Virgin Train going in the other direction ruined its entry to York station for people watching though.
Finnaldo Posted 25 February 2016 Posted 25 February 2016 Legitimate question and without meaning to sound rude: why do you like trains? I can understand other transport, that's quite flexible and doesn't have to stick to a track, so why do you like trains? Is it more the engineering history behind it?
Fox92 Posted 25 February 2016 Author Posted 25 February 2016 Legitimate question and without meaning to sound rude: why do you like trains? I can understand other transport, that's quite flexible and doesn't have to stick to a track, so why do you like trains? Is it more the engineering history behind it? I don't know really... I mean, they've sort of always been part of my life and I guess it's the rush of seeing them but yeah the engineering too. Always loved them and always will though. I won't go out and sit at the side of the mainline for 7 hours but I'll happily go down when there is a one off (like today with the Flying Scotsman where I quite happily waited over an hour to see it). Again though, steam trains are my fave and nothing is better than seeing a steam train thunder up the track.
AyewJoking Posted 25 February 2016 Posted 25 February 2016 its perfectly fine to have a train topic so long as it doesnt go off track
Alf Bentley Posted 25 February 2016 Posted 25 February 2016 its perfectly fine to have a train topic so long as it doesnt go off track I hope you get a Rocket for that joke.
MPH Posted 25 February 2016 Posted 25 February 2016 As I said in OP my favourites include Class 55 Class 158 Always liked the class 37, which is of course similar to the 55.. Was gobsmacked when seeing a 37 haul a prototype 89,90,91 altogether!! through Leicester station once!!
Tuna Posted 25 February 2016 Posted 25 February 2016 its perfectly fine to have a train topic so long as it doesnt go off track It may be a nice place to let off some steam.
separator Posted 25 February 2016 Posted 25 February 2016 The sidings just outside Leicester station have a few old locos waiting to be refurbed there so they can be brought back to mainline use. A firm has set up in the shed and seem to be getting some extra life out of them

howlinmadmurfdoc Posted 25 February 2016 Posted 25 February 2016 I'll always remember standing on the footplate of the flying Scotsman at the GCR when I was about 7 or 8.
Beliall Posted 25 February 2016 Posted 25 February 2016 I like trains too! It's my dads fault, took me all over the country to see various locomotives and ride on different lines, i like old (old now) diesals though, which disapointed him somewhat and slightly newer freight trains are awesome. I also play train simulator on steam

Thracian: ========== Mallard without question - her speed record still stands and I've been lucky enough to see her several times both in service through places like Grantham and in the museum at York. She's a magnificent animal and the distinctive whistle of the streaks is never to be forgotten. I've just finished reading a book about the building of the railways in Peterborough - a town where I was once employed - and the rivalries of the various entrepreneurs who made things happen. I finished in awe of their determination and conviction. People often seem to envy successful businessmen. But how easy it is to overlook the foresight they had, the financial risks they took and the nerve they showed to see things through despite all sorts of setbacks. For methey set an example in what's possible if you want it enough - a bit like Vardy really. Risky business too for the workers at times, as you gather when reading about the causes of crashes or of explosions when dismantling boilers in the loco sheds. But then the explosion at Didcot this week served to give timely example that industrial accidents are not just a thing of the past, for all the emphasis placed on health and safety now. I still travel on the Great Central occasionally and love to see the huge steam locos being loaded onto their roadway carriers at Quorn. One of the Britannia locos was the last one - Britannia itself or Duke of Gloucester and what awesome pieces of engineering they are. They had a special smell and presence. When I lived at Ratby one of the drivers would stop by my home and give me a lift to the station. Haha - imagination what would happen to anyone doing that now.
separator Posted 25 February 2016 Posted 25 February 2016 Sod the tree huggers, we need some more 37's in service...
DennisNedry Posted 25 February 2016 Posted 25 February 2016 Can anybody shed any light on that little train sitting in the field on the Blaby/Glen Parva border? It's been there for years, looks very old, but isn't looked after at all. Edit: Found this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bagnall_fireless_locomotives_(preserved)
