MPH Posted 26 February 2016 Posted 26 February 2016 The train fans should start a friendship with Lokomotiv Moscow. You need a few pints on Saturday night so you can get steaming!
Fox92 Posted 26 February 2016 Author Posted 26 February 2016 Always liked the little shunters too. (I can't find a small image).
Thracian Posted 26 February 2016 Posted 26 February 2016 For me the strangeness is in not having an interest in things. My only regret is in not being as interested in 'most everything as I am now because it adds such a richness to life. Travelling the railways was far more use to me than history or geography lessons. Foreign travel wasn't so easy or affordable when I was young but I'd visited 'most every county of England, Wales and Scotland by the time I was 14 or 15. It was a weekend or school holiday adventure. Tour the sheds, cab the locos, scour the scrapyards, wait for the big expresses, scour out the dockside shunters and then explore other places in the area. Ian Allen and so many others put books together about the railways, local artist David Weston painted all kinds of engines and became something of a legend, as did people like Terence Cuneo and all sorts of lesser names. Others designed posters which enticed people to visit places. So many stories were told, of the human errors, sabotage or extreme weather conditions that led to dreadful, sometimes spectacular accidents with locos careering off bridges into rivers in the middle of the night or into each other on the London Underground or wherever. Then there was the different work the engines did or were adapted to do and the incredible value of the railways in wartime not just for ferrying troops out to the battlefields or sometimes saving their lives by bringing them back to hospitals at home. Others transported armaments, their drivers, firemen and guards praying they weren't picked out for attack from the skies or didn't become victims of a sabotaged line. Really there's no end to the fascination and so it is with so many things when you get involved.
Samilktray Posted 26 February 2016 Posted 26 February 2016 Probably the least cool form of transport along with buses.
Unabomber Posted 26 February 2016 Posted 26 February 2016 **Right first off people who aren't into trains don't start with your stupid comments, just leave the thread** Probably the least cool form of transport along with buses. Come on man don't try to engineer a way to derail this thread. Someone should train you on actual uncool forms of transport such as push bikes and them sneakers with wheels in the heel.

Anyway, here's a video of a new underground train being dragged through Leicester by a class 20 to even up the balance. These new trains are built in Derby, tested on the Old Dalby test track in Leicestershire and then taken to London by good old diesel power.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 26 February 2016 Posted 26 February 2016 Im a railway enthusiast and it always irritates me how many people use the word " train " when talking about the engine or locomotive.A train is the carriages pulled by the locomotive . Yes I do attend pedants annonomous . Anonymous
Foxhateram Posted 26 February 2016 Posted 26 February 2016 Yay fellow enthusiasts. My grandparents knew the station master at the GCR (Rothley) back in the 90s so I got to go on the footplate of prettyuch their entire livery. Boscastle and flying scots man being most notable. I have also been on the mallard while it's been moving and Sir Nigel Gresley although that wasn't at the GCR. Not interested in diesels so much. But steam engines fascinate me. The engineering and intuitive designs are incredible and the way you can get so much speed out of of something so heavy and gigantic is just incredible. Especially when the power is just essentially pressure caused by heat and steam in a boiler. Amazing.
Rincewind Posted 26 February 2016 Posted 26 February 2016 My late step dad to worked on the engines of steam trains. Not sure which role but I believe it was based in the Midlands. I remember when I was younger I used to go trainspotting Loughborough Road area. There used to be an embankment. I even had books with a list of numbers ticked off. Then I reached puberty and became interested in other things. Locomotive trains now are just a means of getting from A to B. If you want to meet other enthusiasts try the Ale Wagon.

Foxhateram Posted 26 February 2016 Posted 26 February 2016 This guy? That's the one! Great man. Always had a pie in his hand.

I can remember a school trip in the early 90s I think where we all got to go on the footplate of the Sir Nigel Gresley, that was at the GCR Loughborough station.
Fox92 Posted 27 February 2016 Author Posted 27 February 2016 I've seen the Sir Nigel Gresley but that was in a works shed in North Yorkshire. Wonderful.
Foxhateram Posted 9 August 2016 Posted 9 August 2016 Guys the Mountsorrel railway is reopening for a tester weekend on the 20 and 21st August. The event is so the GCR can guage visitor numbers to the new attraction. If succesful the GCR will allow extra trains to run to get to Mountsorrel from the main GCR line to Leicester North and Loughborough. This could be very useful for commuting as well as being a huge assett to Mountsorrel. It would be great if people could get involved. Yep the line has been closed a long while but volunteers have restored it to it's former glory. Including restoring a bridge across to the main GCR line. There is also a heritage center there which the volunteers have set up. With a little help from customers this could be huge for heritage railways and massive for Mountsorrel.
GazzinderFox Posted 10 August 2016 Posted 10 August 2016 I can't say that I'm a train enthusiast, but has anybody ever been on the train journey into St. Ives in Cornwall on the train? It's absolutely majestic on a sunny day. It's like being on a greek island or something. If you have a holiday in cornwall and want to visit St. Ives for the day get the park and ride from Lelant Saltings it's well worth it.
Nick Posted 10 August 2016 Posted 10 August 2016 Brilliant! An, 'I'm not interested in trains but...' thread
Wymsey Posted 10 August 2016 Posted 10 August 2016 Will be interesting to see whether the HS2 proposal will be smoothly successful with few minor issues. Just seems over-hyped imo.

For me its a bizarre vanity project - that money could be so much better spent on developing the existing network making things faster, cheaper and more accessible - just my view.

Why is it a vanity project and for whom? I think it's completely neccessary, connecting our major cities on a high speed line is a great idea, anyone has used trains trying to get to Northern cities know what a farce it is, it's about time we all stopped wanking off London and did something for the rest of the UK.

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where it was essential that you got to Birmingham 25 minutes more quickly though?
The Railway Man Posted 10 August 2016 Posted 10 August 2016 8 minutes ago, GazzinderFox said: Have you ever found yourself in a situation where it was essential that you got to Birmingham 25 minutes more quickly though? Not Birmingham no. (Far as I can see HS2 wouldn't effect this anyway) Leeds and Manchester though a few times to watch sporting events. Getting there direct rather than going the Birmingham/Sheffield/York route would be great.

Unlikely that you would be able to get to Manchester direct you will in all likelihood still have to change at Birmingham. Oh and by the way we will still need to get a train/car/bus/taxi to the new east midlands station. So once you have factored all that in how much more quickly will we get to these places anyway? And how much more are you going to have to pay for the privilege? Twice as much?
