Drinkwater had a mixed night won a lot of balls and set up some decent moves but his overall passing was off the mark

Mostly 7's. Sipmpson and Morgan both 8's and MOTM.

Newcastle played a good physical game and kept Kante and Mahrez quiet. They will be the best team in the Championship next year :-)

Mediocre performance so mediocre ratings. Defence did well but we didn't pass the ball well or create chances.

People giving out 7s and 8s to the majority of the team are only doing so because we won.

Completely agree with every mark there, except that I had Fuchs at the same level as the other defenders.

 

One-off poorish game from Drinky, who's otherwise been excellent recently. Vardy worries me a little more - still contributing well to the team, but seems to have lost the confidence to get into goalscoring positions (temporarily, I'm sure).

Ulloa kept possession well for us as sub

A quick word for our defence:

- Take 1 right back with personal issues signed from the Championship; 1 journeyman Championship centre back; 1 Stoke reject cente back; and 1 free-transfer left-back from the German league

- Add a vocal keeper, some good defensive midfield cover & a team work ethic

- Apply a bit of alchemy

- Lo and behold, you have (now) one of the meanest defences in the Premier League, which rarely looks threatened

Kasper 6 - Assured, some routine saves and mostly decent distribution. Wasn't troubled much.

 

Simpson 7 - Sissoko gave him a good battle and he dealt with it alright on the whole. Still, Newcastle's mostly created openings down his side so he didn't shut his flank down completely.

Morgan 6 - Found he was a bit shaky and nowhere near as assured on the ball as he's been previously. Gave away some fouls as well, but Mitrovic never threatened much while Perez had to make do with crumbs. Loved his dribble and effort in the oppo area!

Huth 7 - Rock solid against against who were unwilling to shoot. Did he lose a single aerial duel? Could have had a penalty if he'd gone down insteading of holding his ground and heading over, but this is Huth. You'd need a tank or a Rondón to knock him over.

Fuchs 7 - So-so first half, but particularly good second half after Townsend came on. He and Janmaat hardly got a sniff, and the two cross that did find their targets were either not good enough or abused by Mitrovic. Very good in the air too.

 

Mahrez 5 - Anonymous bar a couple of counterattacks down the middle and an early shot after cutting in from the right. Wild shot near the end too. Was kept surprisingly quiet, despite being up against rather weak defenders. I suppose Sissoko upping his game had something to do with that. Nice interplay with Vardy at the end of the first half, but could've gone alone instead of passing to Schlupp in the second half. Did help Simpson out a fair bit though and made some vital blocks/interceptions in the defensive third.

Drinkwater 5 - Started superbly and looked like he was going to orchestrate things in majestic manner, but a couple of wayward passes during the first half seemed to perturb him. I counted at least two counters which were a direct result of him giving away the ball or losing possession when we were pouring forward. He put in a big shift though and had a defensively alright game and never shirked responsibility, so 5 is maybe a bit harsh in retrospect, but expectations were high given his last few performances.

Kanté 8 - Don't have anything to add to what's already been said plenty of times. Exceptional at tracking players and reading the game. Without doubt the best central midfielder in the country.

Albrighton 6 - Standard Albrighton, excellent in patches, not so excellent the rest of the time. Very hard work and I believe he made the most crucial defensive intervention when he blocked Janmaat's effort early in the second half. Great run and a decent shot after we took the lead, shame it didn't creep in. Until one does, I have to once again highlight the lack of goal threat from him.

 

Okazaki 7 - Wonderful ability for the goal. I had just criticised CR's selection in the match thread after watching Okazaki hopelessly running under the ball after 5-10 minutes of head tennis before he popped up with this crucial goal. Now that Vardy isn't firing, it's ever so important that the others are chipping in. Him, Ulloa, King, Drinkwater and Mahrez have managed to get us three wins and a draw in the in the last four games, and that's why we will become champions (yes, that's right!)

Vardy 6 - Lots of running, but the lack of edge and end product is slightly worrying. He's still vital to the team and contributes much more than just goals. Got the assist for his strike partner just like against Norwich, so can't fault him too much either. Here's hoping he goes on a scoring run soon as he really deserves that golden boot!

 

Subs:

Schlupp 6 - Don't think he contributed much in an attacking sense. As we've said hundreds of times, he lacks composure with his end product. Mahrez set him up beautifully and he could've returned the ball, gone past Taylor or just had a decent shot on target. Instead it became a wild effort that deflected wide. Also, he doesn't look as quick or eager to defend as Albrighton does, but maybe looks deceive. Played his part when we wasted about 3-4 mins down the left hand side near the end.

Ulloa 6 - Didn't do much wrong. His impact from Kasper's long punts was instant. He held the ball up well and was involved in a neat move only to slip at a vital moment. Unlucky not to start the game given his recent performances against Newcastle.

Kasper 6 Kicking poor but I think it could have been the knock he took early on

Simpson 8 MOTM Solid, doesn't dive in. Best of the back 4

Morgan 7 Solid again. Hilarious shimmy in the Newcastle penalty area first half

Huth 8 Some great towering headers and never looked troubled

Fuchs 7 Solid

Mahrez 6 Quiet game

Drinkwater 6 Really good opening 25 mins or so, then fairly poor

Kante 7 Seen him play better but still some important interceptions

Albrighton 6 Plenty of effort and played a key part in the goal

Okasaki 7 Put himself about and a fantastic goal

Vardy 6 Made the goal, otherwise a bit quiet

Subs

Ulloa 7 He's got much better with the ball at his feet

Schlupp 5 Struggled to have an influence

Thought we closed the game out superbly well in the last 5 minutes

What does the "journeyman" term refer to actually? That he's not supposed to be good enough for the Prem? Not sure what it means...

I checked that myself before using the term, as I wasn't sure whether it had connotations of moving around a lot from club to club (not true of Wes - just Forest & LCFC, I think).

 

It doesn't have those connotations. In historical use, it's basically someone who is a qualified craftsman/tradesman for hire, but not with exceptional skills (e.g. a "journeyman carpenter").. In a football context, a "journeyman Championship centre back" is a centre back competent and qualified to play in the Championship, but no more - that was the intended meaning, anyway. Wes has shown the ability, late in his career, to move up several rungs from that, of course.  :D
