Tens of thousands of football fans are expected to turn Leicester city centre into a heaving blue mass of frantic celebration when Leicester City players and Premier League trophy is paraded through the streets on Monday, May 16.

Although the date has not yet officially been confirmed, sources have told the Mercury that the festivities will take place the day after Leicester's last game of the season, which is away to Chelsea.

The open top bus parade will mimic the vibrant blue and white victory procession of two years ago, when the Foxes won the Championship - and were promoted to the top flight.

"Whatever happens it'll be a hell of a party," said club ambassador Alan Birchenall. "You saw how many people came out when we were promoted, I'm expecting at least that many again, and then some."

Dozens of large banners depicting the players, as well as hundreds of metres of blue and white bunting, have already gone up along London Road suggesting the location could be Victoria Park.

However, the exact details are still under wraps.

City Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said: "Let me put it this way.

"We held the promotion celebrations at Town Hall Square and it was packed to bursting point.

"This time we're expecting a lot more people - so we need to find a location capable of holding them all - and that is not Town Hall Square."

The parade in 2014

In 2014, more than 30,000 people gathered as a cheering, chanting throng in Leicester City Centre, spilling out of the square into the surrounding streets.

"The King Power stadium has been full to capacity all season," said Sir Peter. "So that's just over 30,000 people.

"Now think of all the other fans who'll want to be part of this.

"It's going to be a fantastic celebration and will mark a truly unbelievable season.

"We want to make it a party to remember."

It will not be the first time fans will get to glimpse the sterling silver trophy.

This Saturday, City captain Wes Morgan will carry the Premier League trophy onto the King Power pitch after the home clash with Everton, proving to supporters that they have not been dreaming.

The Jester from Leicester, world snooker champion Mark Selby, will also be at the stadium and could join the festivities with his World Championship trophy.

Do I take that as gospel and book my train tickets Into Leicester?

Latest I can leave Leicester is 8.18pm. Is the bulk of the celebrations likely to be over by then?

Probably not, but I'd take what you can tbh. Something is better than nothing.

It's not up in the air. It takes hundreds of hours of cross-organisation preparation. The evening of 16 May from 6pm is the only time they could possibly do it.

If you want to know the route I suggest you walk into town and follow the lamppost banners.
