aussie-fox Posted 19 June 2016 Posted 19 June 2016 Players that could qualify to play for England and win multiple caps but for whatever reason decided not to or played for another country. The best one that comes to my mind is Harry Kewell who I think could have had a decent England career (qualified via his Father) but chose Australia. Any better then Harry?
aussie-fox Posted 19 June 2016 Author Posted 19 June 2016 giggs and kewell in the squad. the left side problem would never have been a problem in the 90/00s like it was! although guppy should have sorted that
aussie-fox Posted 19 June 2016 Author Posted 19 June 2016 Big Wes. I still dont think Wes would have been part of the Euro squad if he hadn't played for Jamacia. He should have but can you actually imagine a England manager picking him.
Aus Fox Posted 19 June 2016 Posted 19 June 2016 Big Wes is a huge shout, would be a certainty to be playing left wing for England at the euros if he didn't chose Jamaica. Muzzy chose Turkey too after being rejected by England despite great form. Giggs and Kewell don't really count as they chose to represent their own nation not another.
The Doctor Posted 19 June 2016 Posted 19 June 2016 People realise Giggs wasn't actually eligible to represent England have been born in Wales to Welshmen, and only relocating to England in his youth right? He could play for the English schools team because that's not done on nationality, but not any of the England teams.
Fox92 Posted 19 June 2016 Posted 19 June 2016 Giggs played for England youth because of location - he moved to Manchester at a young age - other than that he was born in Wales and both his parents are Welsh.
Fox92 Posted 19 June 2016 Posted 19 June 2016 Simone Perotta Great call... World Cup winner I think. Born in Manchester.
DB11 Posted 19 June 2016 Posted 19 June 2016 Surely any of the Home Nations players you could go back in relations far enough to find an English link?
Fox92 Posted 19 June 2016 Posted 19 June 2016 Surely any of the Home Nations players you could go back in relations far enough to find an English link? Pretty sure you could say that about Brazil/Portugal, Argentina/Spain....
The Doctor Posted 19 June 2016 Posted 19 June 2016 Surely any of the Home Nations players you could go back in relations far enough to find an English link? Except the agreement between the 4 nations doesn't work that way. No such thing as a Scottish, English, Welsh or Norn Irish passport, just British, so it's the granny rule - the link needs to be no further away than grand parents. So for instance I've got Irish cousins (?) for which the connection goes back to about my great great grandparents or possibly a generation further - that link wouldn't allow me to play for Ireland, but my Scottish grandparent means I'd be eligible for Scotland.

I did know that, I was just hoping for a bite I mean, if he did qualify for England he would obviously picked us.
Webbo Posted 19 June 2016 Posted 19 June 2016 Who was that big Australian that played up front for Italy?
Jimothy Posted 19 June 2016 Posted 19 June 2016 Who was that big Australian that played up front for Italy? Christian Vieri was eligible for Australia, think his brother played for them. Was Italian born though. Not sure if you meant him.
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 19 June 2016 Posted 19 June 2016 There are few players that would have qualified on residency rulings, had they applied for nationality I think - Carlo Cudicini comes to mind.
The Doctor Posted 19 June 2016 Posted 19 June 2016 There are few players that would have qualified on residency rulings, had they applied for nationality I think - Carlo Cudicini comes to mind. Cudicini, Almunia, Arteta definitely. But instead you got Rob Green and Jordan Henderson.
Matt Posted 19 June 2016 Posted 19 June 2016 Has there been many players that have choose England over their country of birth? The only one I can think of is Owen Hargreaves.
