Dalian Atkinson - dead after being tasered by Police - Reports

Recommended Posts

Sad stuff, I await the IPCC investigation with interest considering he'd already been in receipt of medical attention pre Police intervention.

There has to be better ways than using these appalling devices.

No idea who it was though until now, saw the reports on the red button and thought 'another one?'.

#BlackLivesMatter  Another story for the extremist group to latch onto and incite violence.

I mean it's not like the police would have used a taser on him for no reason. It's not like he wouldn't have been posing a danger to either himself or others. Oh no, the police just tasered him cos he was black

That is very sad - I'm against firearms of any description as they are used disproportionately against those with mental health issues (not to mention colour).  Wish him RIP and best wishes to his loved ones.

Or... all sides could just wait for the facts to become clear before speculating on the reasons for this happening.

Is a taser a firearm? Aren't tasers deployed as a (generally) non lethal method of immobilising a person who may be a risk to himself or others? OK, so it clearly wasn't non lethal in this case, but we need to understand the facts first.

What, like a firearm? If it gets to the level that a taser had to be used how would you propose to have dealt with it?

But that group don't do they? They jump onto the notion that a black man has been killed by the police and then use propaganda to incite hatred and violence

Hence why I said "all sides".

This is too much.I can still picture him scoring in front of the kop at Filbert Street in 1988 for Ipswich. I'd taken my partner, an Ipswich fan, for her birthday. She was so happy to see that goal - it was the winner.

Thanks for the link to the Villa site above. Anyone know the best Ipswich forum?

A man who died after he was shot by police with a Taser gun has been named locally as ex-Aston Villa footballer Dalian Atkinson.

Officers were called to a home in Meadow Close, Telford, Shrophire in the early hours of this morning amid concerns "for the safety of an individual".

West Mercia Police said the 48-year-old man was given medical treatment after being hit by a stun gun but died around 90 minutes later.

An unnamed neighbour said: "I had known him since he was a little boy, he was a famous footballer at one time. He was friendly, he had no trouble that I know of."

An ambulance spokesman said while the man was being taken to Princess Royal Hospital his condition deteriorated and he suffered a cardiac arrest.

He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the medical facility.

Atkinson's wonder goal against Wimbledon during a 3-2 win in October 1992 was named Match of the Day's goal of the season.

In 1994, he scored at Wembley as Villa beat Manchester United to lift the League Cup.

Atkinson started his career at Ipswich and then played for Sheffield Wednesday and Spanish side Real Sociedad before moving to Villa.

The police use of Tasers is intended as a non-lethal weapon.

The incident has now been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

Police said in a statement: "West Mercia Police can confirm that officers responded to a report for the concern for the safety of an individual at approximately 1.30am this morning at an address in Telford.

"Upon arrival Taser was deployed and a 48-year-old man, who subsequently received medical attention, was pronounced dead at approximately 3am.

"West Mercia Police are unable to comment any further as the incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) as is normal procedure, and will assist the IPCC with their inquiries."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called by West Mercia Police to an address in Meadow Close in the Trench area of Telford at about 1.45am this morning.

"An ambulance was dispatched and upon arrival found a man who had been Tasered.

"As he was being conveyed to Princess Royal Hospital, his condition deteriorated and he went into cardiac arrest.

"Despite the efforts of the crew and hospital staff, it was not possible to save him and he was confirmed dead at hospital, shortly after arrival."

The police use of Tasers rose slightly towards the end of 2015 with 10,329 uses by forces in England and Wales - a 2% increase compared with 2014.

Unfortunately tasers are lethal for some people (for example those with elevated heart rates) so should be treated as such.  I wasn't spoiling for an argument and totally agree about waiting before passing judgement.

well, the fact is you and I don't know yet, so its not useful to accuse him until the facts are known or we have a clearer picture

How can your default stance possibly be "we don't know it's not useful to accuse him" as if you actually think that the police would taser him for no reason? Really?!

Poor guy, I liked hiom growing up, can see his death being used by politically motivated idiots now as well.

I'd still rather we went down the tasar route that firearms like the US though.

Tazer's peak at 50000 volts, if you have a heart problem/weak heart then there's always chance it can do more harm.

When it's best to be cautious before the facts are established you can always rely on our top newspapers to wade in with additional detail that may or may not be appropriate.  2 directly contradictory statements attributed to his Dad in the opening sentences, let's have another shout out for journalism par excellence.

As usual, I provide this link with the caveat that by accessing the Mail website you're providing the hits craved by their advertisers, so are basically encouraging them, BUT THAT'S YOUR CHOICE.

My default stance, as is English law, is that everyone is innocent until proven guilty. This not only applies to Atkinson, but also to the police present. I hope you don't ever do jury service mate.
